RE: MLB Draft
Wow-- UT just lost a highly regarded LHP JUCO recruit (from Galvenston College) who was drafted in the 27th round. He just signed with the Rays. Ouch.

RE: MLB Draft
Not super surprising given the heat on him right now, but Heimlich went undrafted.

And the OSU President issued a statement today stating that Heimlich will be welcomed back to OSU next season. Ugh.

Jerry Jones doesn't own an MLB franchise.

Is this surprising? Didn't the OSU police dept know before... he had 2 year on campus where he DID register with police. It was just this last year when he received a citation for failing to register that caused it to make the news.
He received an ovation from fans at the supers apparently.

RE: MLB Draft
Given that they once signed a convicted drug dealer who got kicked out of Miami (I didn't think anyone could be bad enough to get kicked out of the U) for baseball, and a basketball transfer at the center of a sexual assault investigation who was banned from the Oregon campus, I'm sure UH would welcome him with open arms!

RE: MLB Draft
Signing period is over and it would appear that Trei Cruz is safe and sound.
FIU managed to retain 3 of it's 5 Top 200 recruits, including two elite pitchers...

RE: MLB Draft
Fun tidbit from last week's Prospect Hot Sheet at Baseball America:
Quote:HELIUM
Tristan Gray, 2B, Pirates (21)
Short-season West Virginia (New York-Penn)
Gray played a little bit of everywhere at Rice because of his versatility and athleticism. The Pirates have let him focus on second base, his best defensive position, and it’s paid off so far. Gray is hitting for average and power. As a lefty-hitting second baseman with a .386/.462/.636 slash line, he’s looking like a bargain as a 13th-round pick.
Gray is pretty old and experienced to be playing in short season ball. The early success is obviously great, but hopefully he gets bumped up to Low-A soon so he gets a better test.

Doesn't sound like a very mature person at this point - so can they risk it? They kind of already have by taking him in first round, though it is late in the round.
Very OT, but Romero still hasn't straightened out. He got sent home from spring training by the Nationals.

So, how long of a leash did he have at UH? He's proving adept at burning bridges.

Well, they've also had a convicted drug dealer as in infielder that even Miami kicked out, so let's just say it's a VERY long leash if Whiting thinks they're any good...

His story reminds me a little bit of the Lawrence Phillips (Nebraska running back) story; his abundant talent keeps causing people to give him another chance.
Romero is smart enough to understand that, based on his life so far, if he can throw a baseball hard enough, someone out there will always give him another chance. This is a learned behavior on his part; his aberrant behavior got him to a first round draft choice and a large slug of money. Why, then, should he change, if change is difficult?
