why not boise, byu full...if we take byu from the wcc. we could then lure gonzaga since the WCC is essentially a 2.5 team league..taking byu would kill that league ..and then add sdsu....

sdsu and gonzaga are better bball than vcu and dayton

In February 2016, Bronco Mendenhall - one person in power - stated that he thought independence was unsustainable - in the context of keeping up with the P5 (not in the context of having to join a G5 conference). Was he wrong? Since then, BYU's AD has repeatedly stated that independence is not only sustainable but that it is "thriving."

Since Mendenhall's public "unsustainable" comments, BYU has announced:
- a revision to the BYU-Virginia series that ADDED a game in Provo
- Baylor h-h
- Minnesota h-h
- extension of Utah series through 2022
- Tennessee h-h
- intention to move the '21 Arizona neutral-site game to the new Vegas NFL stadium

While I agree with Bronco in the context of keeping up with the P5 money, independence is light years ahead of where BYU was 6 or 7 years ago in the MWC or where it would be today as part of the MWC.

When BYU started 4-0 in 2014 (after beating Texas, Virginia, and two AAC teams), they were ranked in the top-20 and in the national conversation for *busting* the playoffs (until Tayson Hill's injury and the wheels came off)....because they had the schedule to at least place them in that conversation.

BYU continues to have top-30 attendance, hovering around 60K average. BYU gets multiple games on over-the-air television and ESPN/2 annually. Fan access and exposure is better than ever - even compared to the 80's and 90's.

BYU has continued and upcoming series and home games with Utah, Wisconsin, USC, Tennessee, Washington, Stanford, ASU, Arizona, Missouri, Virginia, Minnesota, Baylor, etc. 4-6 P5 opponents plus regional rivals Boise St. and Utah St. every year.

BYU is not fighting to remain relevant.

Absolutely. It would be hard for BYU to turn down the AAC if Boise St., Gonzaga, and SDSU come along.

Seems to me that the AAC would be elevated.

BYU went to the Las Vegas six years in a row right before it left the MWC. ESPN owns the Las Vegas Bowl - not UNLV. And, with the new NFL stadium, I imagine that the bowl will see an upgrade if anything. Why not hitch the AAC wagon to that bowl, even if through the BYU affiliation?

If BYU and Army were in the mix, the Armed Forces Bowl could absolutely become an annual upgraded bowl for the AAC.

RE: AAC Expansion to make P6 push
If the AAC gets the money expected by many on this forum, joining the conference
will be "all upside" for any non-P5 school. All we need do is wait a year or two.

Mean while, an affiliation with BYU is positive for both sides.
The question for the AAC is: does it prevent scheduling P5 schools.

And yet BYU has met its independence goals in spades - namely greater fan access and exposure. Not even debatable. In 2009, I was lucky to get 2 games on television - and the broadcasts were on VERSUS. I had to "watch" games using online gamecasts and listening to the radio call - you know, where it shows the score, a little football icon that moved along the field, and text of the last play and down and distance. Now, nearly every game is available on national television, usually with at least a couple of games on ABC or FOX each year. BYU has played teams from almost every conference and all around the country. 90% of the PAC, two-thirds of the MWC, and almost half the B1G, SEC, B12, and AAC.

And BYU has future schedules that look more like the P5 than the G5 for the next decade.

Can't argue with your schedule. You have a few low-hanging fruit MWC teams (Boise aside, you cool Boise, you cool), but also have LSU, Utah, Wisconsin, Mississippi State. Better than any of our schedules.

thats a front view....you arent seeing these contracts being sgned, you arent in the financial statements...

you have to do 2 fcs in 2019...byu has numerous 2 and 1s with major p5 and is only capable of doing 1 and dones with fcs..the Hawaii exception is single handedly giving you the ability to play 6 homes and thats no enough ... itll be interesting to see how yo finish your future schedules and still maintain 6 and alot of your future schedules already have 6 away...but not enough home games

Critics have beaten this drum for 6 years now. And yet, BYU's schedules look great (although the 2018 home schedule is admittedly weak - especially with Utah St. and NIU down - but the overall schedule is tremendous - Arizona, Cal, Wisconsin, Washington, Utah St., Boise St., and Utah over Thanksgiving weekend!).

In 2019, BYU has Utah, USC, Washington, and Boise St. - probably the best home schedule ever. And, Liberty will be FBS and the Cougars are doing the Flames a solid as a fellow independent. (And, by 2022, Liberty will likely have expanded its stadium to host the nearby BYU fans and alumni - including those from nearby LDS stronghold Southern Virginia University). And only 5 road games for '19 so far. So, add a 2019-2020 series and a 2020 FCS game and 2019 and 2020 are complete.

Most other seasons have 2 or 3 good P5 home games. 2021 is in great shape, with Utah, ASU, Boise St., and Virginia at home and the Arizona game in the new Vegas NFL stadium. Only 3 road games scheduled.

BYU has work to do for the 2022 and 2024 seasons, with only Baylor and USF on the slate so far - but what did the 2017 and 2019 schedules look like in 2012?

BYU's 2018 Home Schedule is pathetic. Their 2019 Home Schedule is spectacular. Indy has worked for BYU. I just think playing for Championships is cool, which is something they cannot do. Oh well.

BYU will never join a G5 conference, because that would be accepting a lower status in the CFB world, than Utah. This is something they cannot accept.

Cannot wait to kick your ass in a few years. Take care.

I read yesterday that a Washington St game vs BYU was moved to 2021. Did you guys already play the home game vs Washington St? I'm looking at future schedules and don't see the home game. Also, the Arizona series was a 3-1-2. 3 @ AZ, 1 @ BYU & one in Vegas and one in Phoenix. Which game was moved? I see some good home games for BYU starting with in a few years but I see a lot of seasons with 6 road games already scheduled. Who are you expecting to get at home that isn't showing on future schedules websites?

It was the kickoff game for 2012 - Thursday, August 30 on ESPN - BYU 30, WSU 6 in Provo.

In 2013, it was originally a 3-game series: first in Phoenix in '16, second in Tuscon in '18, third in Provo in '20. Anyway, in 2015 they moved the '20 Provo game to Las Vegas in '21 - which will be played in the new Vegas NFL stadium. They added the '26 and '27 games in Provo and Tuscon, respectively. So, it will ultimately be a 5-game series with 2 in Tuscon, 1 in Provo, and 2 @ neutral sites (in Phoenix and Vegas - where BYU has some of its largest out-of-state alumni bases).

Note that BYU had 30K of 50K fans in attendance in Phoenix last year. As I said, Phoenix area has a large BYU alumni base and LDS population.

There is only 1 season with 6 road games now - 2018. The 2018 home schedule only has 5 home games so far, with FCS opponent already scheduled. With road openings now in 2019 and on, I'm sure BYU has something in the works for a good 2018 home game. It is rumored that it could be Oklahoma St. coming to Provo in 2018, with a return game in 2019. That would put BYU at 6 P5 opponents in 2018 (2 at home) and 5 in 2019 (3 at home). 2018 gets the Holy War on Turkey Day.

2019 has only 5 road games now. 6 at home, incl. USC, Utah, Washington, Boise
2020 - 4 road games. 4 home, incl. Michigan St. and Mizzou and SDSU in November.
2021 has 3 road games and AZ in Vegas. 4 home, incl. Utah, Boise, ASU, UVA.
2022 - 5 road games and only 2 home games - Baylor and USF.
2023 - 2 road games, 3 home - Tennessee, Boise, Stanford
2024 - nothing scheduled yet (?!)
2025 0 road games, 3 home - Stanford, Minnesota, Virginia

There are rumors that Nebraska, Ohio St., Arkansas, and Clemson series are in the works. Ohio St. might include a game in the new Vegas NFL stadium. Also rumored that the BYU may play Notre Dame in Vegas.

Great update. I don't even remember the 2012 game vs Washington St but it doesn't surprise me that BYU blew them out. Wow, if you could get the ND's, Ohio St's in Vegas--that would be huge. I remember the BYU vs OU game in Dallas that you guys won and that was big time. When is the new Vegas stadium supposed to be ready? Was the game moved to make sure it was played in that rather than UNLV's stadium?

Do we really need to be adding schools in California? I know we're not exactly a regional conference, but poo. Houston, SMU, and Tulsa are already in frontiers that aren't fully mapped yet.

who cares about regionality

cali is the 3rd best state for getting recruit, we are a league of potential and major markets .. sdsu has the potential and an elite bball team

the fan potential is there, they werent from 3k to 13k in bball atendance in a 10 year span when fisher came, the same can be done in football ..

we'd be the only conference in the big 3 major recruiting pipeline ..with the 4th state also in our league (ohio)
4th is Georgia

why not boise, byu full...if we take byu from the wcc. we could then lure gonzaga since the WCC is essentially a 2.5 team league..taking byu would kill that league ..and then add sdsu....

sdsu and gonzaga are better bball than vcu and dayton

Absolutely. It would be hard for BYU to turn down the AAC if Boise St., Gonzaga, and SDSU come along.
Nobody is flying all sports 5 hours for less than B12 money.

You don't have to. Regional alignment for minor Olympic sports - as is currently the case for many Olympic sports. Track & field, cross country, and swimming & diving already follow a regional schedule, with lots of invitational meets, so there aren't really conference games. Similar season structures for tennis and golf. AAC championship can rotate from year to year around the conference.

For the minor sports that do have conference seasons, stack the schedules so that EAST and WEST teams don't play each other much, if at all, until the AAC tournament. With 6 schools in the Central timezone, schedules can pretty easily never matchup EAST v. WEST....if cross-country travel truly is not wanted.

HOWEVER, I don't think cross-country travel is as difficult as some try to make it sound. I note that a number of AAC teams play minor sports on the West Coast. For instance, UConn baseball traveled to California and Utah. Tulane and Houston baseball also played in California. ECU, UCF and Houston softball traveled to California last year. ECU golf played in California. SMU, Houston and Cincinnati golf traveled to Arizona. SMU, Tulane and Tulsa tennis and volleyball played games in Arizona. SMU women's soccer played in Utah. USF, SMU, Houston and Memphis women's basketball played in California or Nevada.

And....San Diego St. is already an AAC associate member in women's rowing. (who knew this!) Last year, SMU and UCF rowing traveled to California. And, SDSU traveled to Florida.

RE: AAC Expansion to make P6 push
Jezus H - then just have a football/basketball conference and let all of the other sports fall into their own geographic areas. NOBODY in [mass quantity] gives a flying-F about conference affiliations with any other sport but these two.

Then these travel issues would become a non-issue in a mili-second. And I also bet that alignment with the "P" conferences would take on a whole different look as well.

Stop the insanity with this bull****.

I see this happening in the next 10 years. Major sports will be in a conference. Non revenue sports will be in tighter geographic regions. Maybe called a district instead of conference.

The main problem about a far flung conference is not transporting teams but rather fan interaction. Does the Temple f an care about Colorodo State? Does the SDSU fan care about UCF? Likely no. And unless you're adding a national brand nobody 2500 miles away will care. And no narioinal brand is joining a G5.
