That first one is a great article.

Re the second one about UVa scheduling mid-majors: yeah, right! I think the last time they played us in W'burg was '83 or '84. The Tribe led the whole game until UVa scored with about half a minute left. Scott Coval then drained a really long shot (and this was before the advent of the three pointer) and won it at the buzzer. I don't think UVa has been back since.
(I was listening to that game on the radio when I lived in Northern Virginia, so you can imagine I was getting poor reception. However, although I couldn't hear a word that the announcer said, there was no mistaking the meaning of the huge roar of the crowd when the shot went in.)

UVA played at the hall my freshman year in 92-93 I believe
That was a top 25 UVA team with Junior Burroughs, Corey Alexander, and Ted Jeffries. We fought back from a big deficit and lost on OT. It was the best home game experience that I ever had at W&M. The hall was rocking.

Just looking back at the last 5 times they played in the Kap (you have to go back 20 years for the last time and 40 years for the last 5 times):

Looks like in 1996-1997 they beat us 75-64 in regulation at the Kap
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/scho...edule.html

In 1992-93 they beat us 93-84 in regulation at the Kap
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/scho...edule.html

In 1984-85 we beat them 54-53 in regulation at the Kap
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/scho...edule.html

In 1980-81 they beat us 88-68 in regulation at the Kap
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/scho...edule.html

In 1978-79 they beat us 44-40 in regulation at the Kap (the second time we'd played that year)

VT played us at the Hall my freshman year, Thanksgiving of 1997. We lost the game at the buzzer.

I'm not sure a P5 school has come to Williamsburg since.

What the hell am I remembering then? I distinctly remember Brendan Connor hitting a late 3 to tie the game in regulation. Maybe my memory is slipping. Or maybe we tied it late and then they pulled away at the end. I remember it was a big deal and ESPN showed clips because UVA was in the top 10 at the time.

I was there for that 1993 UVA game in the stands with my Dad when I was a teenager, and that was the most exciting atmosphere/biggest crowd I've ever experienced at W&M Hall for sure. Our seats initially were all the way up in the concrete. It is a memory.

We can back from a big deficit to tie it, and the Hall was going nuts. I thought the game went to OT as well, but perhaps they just pulled ahead with some FT's and our missed shots at the end of regulation.

FWIW, the W&M media supplement also has the game going to OT

I also remember it being an OT game. As I recall we were down 23 with 13 minutes to go. It may have been Brendan Connor but I thought it was Kurt Small (I could have been wrong) that made the shot to send us to OT. I remember the ESPN clips as well.

It probably was and the website just didn't mark it down correctly - that would be my guess. I'd trust your vivid memory over the chances of a 3rd party site marking it down wrong.

That '92-'93 game sounds great (except how it ended). I am surprised that I don't remember it because I used to listen to every single game on the radio (even during the 7 long long long years of the Chuck Swenson era; I should have gotten a medal for that).

RE: Va Colleges Spending on Football & Basketball
I remember the 1984 game very well. We had a big lead in the second half and it was slipping away. I spent most of the last 10 minutes pacing out back near the concession stands.

I have a (probably made up) memory of David Bond being inserted into the game as a designated shooter. He never made an outside shot but got a huge offensive rebound and put it back it. I always thought that bucket, every bit as much as Coval's, won the game for us.

And that is why I appreciate what Shaver is trying to do: develop a tough team that goes inside as much as possible rather than a soft one that relies totally on 3s.

Back to the original theme of this thread, I think I have decided to discontinue my unrestricted donations to the Tribe Club and give it all with a basketball designation. I know it doesn't make a difference (the money will be moved around as has been pointed out before).

It's just that the school is not being honest with me. I was giving some money to support the overall athletic program and other money to support my passion for basketball. If I give it all to basketball the reporting will show an increase in basketball contributions, even if funding for the program does not go up.

1984--Mr. Ribe was in law school there. I was home in little 'ol Clifton Forge planning our wedding. I have a vague memory of hearing scratchy parts of that game on the radio? Maybe I was able to pick up a weak signal out of Richmond. But, I clearly remember Mr. Ribe calling me after that game very excited. We did rock the hall back then.

Ran into both Bruce & Barry Parkhill today while they were playing golf at Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Incredibly cordial and seemed really pleased that I remembered both them and there contributions to W&M basketball. Always fun to run into anyone with Tribe connections.

Recently announced, a few who didn't get the memo on hosting ACC opponents this upcoming season:
Coastal Carolina is hosting Wake Forest.
Davidson is the host team vs UNC in Charlotte.

Good for Coastal.

First, they hosted the CBI championship game #1 a few months ago; now they're hosting Wake! Obviously, a direct correlation!

:-)

Also helps that they're moving up to the Sun Belt. They have a nice, albeit small, arena

How about another?

Mason announced today they will be hosting Big 10 member, Penn State. This is part two of a home/home contract.

I learned recently that UVA has sunk to new levels paying $300,000 per annum for their diversity honcho. They have money to burn. I was misguided in my support for BM as Hc for football. He has regressed to being one of the biggest bullsh ters in coaching. I hope our win up there will send his moldy butt into coaching oblivion.

RE: Va Colleges Spending on Football & Basketball
Revenues come from two primary sources, student athletic fees and donations. Might add some revenue from ticket sales, but this hinges on winning and a better parking setup. The development officer who convinces wealthy donor(s) that God put him and/or her on earth to fund parking facilities will deserve a bonus.

The athletic department doubtless has a handle on "bird in hand" pending donations. Will be interesting to see what revenue and expenses look like over next 3 - 4 years. Particularly if overall numbers don't surge, where the Tribe competes becomes as important as how much is spent competing.

The notion of "punching above one's weight" is a bit more compelling in non-conference competition than in conference. For every school valorously punching above its weight, there is probably another conference school with a larger enrollment, higher student activity fees, larger budget (or fewer sports to fund), and less stringent academic requirements perfectly happy to punch below weight and its ticket to the NCAA tournament.
