Numbers and maybe the attitude say something about him being a old high school player. Lots of parents holding the kid back these days to give them a competitive edge over the younger players-scouts are aware of it and don't like it at all. College coaches might actually like it-it is a BS way of cheating within the rules.

Holding them back when? Kindergarten or later in school? As the parent of a young boy, there are valid reasons to delay starting school beyond an athletic advantage.

I am talking middle school and high school and it is 100% for athletic advandages. There are kids right here in Wilmington being held back to play against younger,smaller kids.
There are occasional legit reasons to keep a younger kid back but I don't think it should ever include sports.

UNCWs Josh Roberson picked by the Marlins in the 12th as well.

What's the slot value for Roberson? Slot value for the 315th pick by Chicago was $131k; Roberson was picked 44 spots later. That's not life changing money.

They can offer him up to $125k without it affecting their overall pool that they have to spend on draftees. He will probably get between $100-125 to sign. Agree, not life changing money but unless he really jumps to be a top prospect next year you can safely say he'll loose a zero off the bonus.

Thanks for clarifying. I'm not plugged into that age group really, so I'm just unaware.

That makes sense. Best of luck to him regardless of his decision. I can only imagine the thrill of having your name called. Congrats Josh!

Feight picked in the 19th round by the Padres. They listed him as a 1B.

Congrats to Nick! While I'm confident Roberson signs, I think there's at least a small chance Feight comes back. If he signs, I wish him the best of luck. His sophomore season alone made it very likely he'd get taken somewhere in this range.

Seems like our offense could potentially take a huge hit

That's the life of a Top 40-50 program. Always losing quality talent, either a year early or before they even arrive on campus.

I'd have to assume Nick goes. Even with another chart-topping year, I can't imagine he improves his draft stock that much. Plus, as you mentioned with Roberson, signing bonus is gonna look a lot better as a junior.

RE: 2017 MLB Draft (June 12-14)
If everyone who has been taken thus far leaves, my guess is the lineup looks something like this:

1. Riley Zayicek RF
2. Noah Liles CF --> freshman, switch-hitter
3. Ryan Jeffers C
4. Mason Berne DH
5. Kep Brown LF
6. Ausin LaFollette SS --> sophomore, bats left-handed
7. Zack Canada 1B
8. Cole Weiss 3B
9. Douglas Angeli Jr. 2B --> freshman, bats right-handed

Off the bench: OF Noah Bridges RF (fr.); C Josh Hernandez; OF Brycen Braswell (fr.); INF Blake Deatherage; INF Jackson Meadows

Bridges and Liles could both very easily start for us, as they are highly rated recruits, have speed, and are playing well in Summer ball. But I imagine Zayicek and Kep Brown get the first shots at an OF vacancy, with Liles and Bridges competing for the 3rd starting spot.

I could also see Canada having trouble acquiring and keeping a steady starting job.

We definitely have some good talent.

Thorburn gets picked in the 31st round by Baltimore. Good for him, I wasn't sure he'd get a chance.

2017 MLB Draft (June 12-14)
Incoming recruit Nick Jodway, RHP and our # 2 ranked draft prospect (among incoming freshmen) behind Jones, was not taken.

RE: 2017 MLB Draft (June 12-14)
Canada can hit so you have to pencil him in. Yea, he had a rough start but came on at the end. With Scalf teams, I never worry about scoring runs, I worry about arms. Next year, UNCW should finally have enough arms to be solid through mid week along with the weekend. That's important for this program because when you can get 5 plus of quality mid week, you have a real shot to get the at large. That's where this program is, or was until this year, getting in good position before the CAA tourney to solidify.

Once you get there or are in a CAAT to secure, you have a reliable ace to deliver in game 1 with Alex. He's so solid. If Sharpe or Beehler continues to ascend, you have a really solid weekend rotation to deal with. Gorham could contend as a weekend guy too, but that's a good problem to have. Cota has a lot of arm talent and could/should be the closer. Magestro should be back as he was a magician for 2 seasons until this year. Bruno may be finally ready to go after Tommy John and you have Easter and a couple more than have experience-two hard throwers. There are wild cards like the freshman Jodway, who has touched the mid to upper 90's so there will be some options next year that were not there this year.

An ECU poster once wrote, "It's about arms, arms, and arms." Well, maybe UNCW finally has some.

We shall see what we shall see. Hopefully it works out as you envision.
I saw that Seth Frankhoff pitched for the Cubs June 9. He took the loss & is back in AAA now.

He really came a long way after UNCW that's for sure. I don't remember him being a dominating pitcher in college. Maybe I'm losing it though, it's been a while.
