Fresno St renewed wrestling program joins Big12 as an affiliate

Surprised that the PAC12 didn't take them, as it's not normally exclusionary toward affiliates. Or maybe Fresno St preferred the Big 12 just to have an ongoing relationship with them.

The Big 12 truly becomes big now, as UNI also joins, and NDSU, SDSU, Wyoming, Air Force, No Colo, and Utah Valley are already wrestling affiliates.

Perhaps this a play by the Big12 to absorb Pac12 wrestling.

It's down to Oregon St, Ariz St, Stanford, Cal Poly, and Bakersfield now after Boise dropped it. The Pac12 needs six squads.

Wrestling doesn't need 6. There is no team AQ. It's an individual sport and individuals qualify to Regionals and Nationals

Conferences have a certain number of reserved bids in each weight class to get to regionals. Your wrong on this, but won't admit it.

The PAC12 has two years to get to 6.

interesting the Big 12 in their conference meetings last week mentioned that they had a discussion about affiliate membership and how to structure that moving forward

NoDak,

Actually there is a very complex RPI formula, which is collected over the year. Only some of the Regional qualifiers are selected at Conference or other Qualifying Tournament.

http://www.ncaa.com/news/wrestling/artic...mpionships

So it's not really required.

But you are correct that for the AQ in each division, and not strictly at-large bids, the P12 will need a 6th school per the following byLaw

Quote:18.5 Automatic Qualifiation by Conference.
18.5.1 Division Championship. To be eligible for automatic qualifiation into any Division I championship, a conference shall: (Revised: 1/9/06 effctive 8/1/06)
(a) Have at least six member institutions classifid in Division I in the sport in which automatic qualifiation is
sought; and
(b) Meet all requirements for conference automatic qualifiation into any division championship as set forth in
Bylaw 31.3.4.
18.5.2 National Collegiate Championship.
[#] To be eligible for automatic qualifiation into any National Collegiate Championship, a conference shall: (Adopted: 1/9/06 effctive 8/1/06)
(a) Have at least six active members that sponsor the applicable sport in any division;
(b) Meet all applicable requirements for conference automatic qualifiation into any National Collegiate Championship as set forth in Bylaw 31.3.4.

I believe you are correct, and I was wrong. But wit the caveat, that RPI, coaching an other ratings would likely qualify easily most (probably not quite all) of the P12 wrestlers who are going to the tournament anyway.

I think the Big 12 will shed a member in a couple years. It could be Fresno State. That would be in time to solve the Pac-12 problem.

Fresno was in the PAC10 when we dropped wrestling. The PAC has a rule that an affiliate can only participate in one sport. We need a home for womens LAX which will probably be the PAC. They will have to change the affiliation rule for Fresno to return to the PAC in wrestling.

And to make it even more complicated an issue, while the NCAA wrestling tournament is entirely an individual tournament .... it still awards a (pseudo, in my opinion ...) team title!

That said, glad to hear Fresno restarting it as a varsity sport. You don't often hear about new varsity wrestling teams at the NCAA level these days, usually it's schools dropping the sport.

I went to at least 10 Big 12 wrestling tournaments from 1987 to 2013 with 5 teams and even went to a couple with 4.
The 5: Iowa St, OK St, OKlahoma, Nebraska, Missouri
The 4: Iowa St, Ok St, Oklahoma, West Virginia.
