Carey Hot Seat?
When the media says he's on the Hot Seat I guess it's legit. Win or be replaced? Going to be an interesting year for Huskie Football.

Again in the video we see Carey yelling at the players. Sometimes it may be necessary, but a guy who spends much of the game yelling at and berating his players will not win them over. It alienates a lot of the team instead of creating a cohesive environment. I may be wrong, but I doubt we see anything exciting this year. We have the talent, but not the coaching. Can't wait until Carey coaches his last game at NIU.

What you call "yelling" most call coaching...never played any football, did you?

+1, that's football. Novak/Kill/Doeren - they all yelled at players and chewed them out when necessary. Pretty sure all coaches do, except for maybe PJ

That's it, I was waiting for the defense of Carey from you. No, I never played football at the college level or above, but I have been watching a lot of it since well before you were born. You will get a lot more from a player through encouragement and positive instruction than constantly yelling. Of course some yelling is necessary, but not to the extent Carey does it. And at times I'm sure that yelling can be crude. Remember the alleged fracas before the Poinsettia Bowl?

I think DF is referring to incessant, continuous, indiscriminate yelling. Yelling loses whatever effectiveness it would otherwise have when done like that. Some guys you yell at and get results. Some guys you yell at and ruin them. Yell at all of them indiscriminately, and you win some and lose some. Differentiation! It's the key to teaching!

This. Good coaches know how to get through players, whether is it yelling, just a simple explanation, etc.

RE: Carey Hot Seat?
I've seen dejected, disappointed players come off the sideline and Carey gives them a pat on the back and lets them go on their way. He may be a little rough around the edges but acting as if he's some abusive football coach is a stretch. Watch a full FBS game and you'll likely see both coaches yelling at their players at some point in the game. Ignoring the times that he supports the players isn't fair.

A good coach knows when to STROKE and knows when to POKE. I guess you would like to see more STROKING and less POKING!

Thank you for an analogy I understand. Actually, I tend to prefer more poking, but I also am a strong advocate of plenty of stroking as a prelude to poking. One sort of leads to the other. However, I'd imagine that there's plenty of stroking by our coaching staff, so maybe the analogy is not that good after all.

Exactly. Yelling is fine as long as you don't spend your career doing it.

So....... obviously some hate Carey, and some tolerate him. What kind of year does he need to have to save his job if he's really on the Hot Seat?

In today's what have you done for me lately college football coaching environment the only guy not on a perpetual hot seat is Nick Saban.

And he probably only has a grace period of a year or two.

It does seem like he mostly yells, I don't see much of anything else.

Did you?
First things first, you don't have to be a former player for various sports to be able to recognize a coach who communicates effectively, can teach and bring out the best in their players.
Too bad the only kind you apparently experienced were the Rod Carey hot-head versions; that's assuming you played football and based on your name, supposedly basketball. That's up for debate considering how much you defend the mediocrity that is Montgomery.
Sorry, now I've stooped to your level when confronted with someone who disagrees with your opinion. Perhaps dogfan would wipe the badminton court with you. By the way, careful about putting down badminton considering NIU's major athletic achievements include winning an AIAW National Championship in the sport (granted the women on that team locked up that title prior to the third and last day of the meet already knowing their sport would be dropped).

RE: Carey Hot Seat?
His grace period is directly related to wins and losses, and, more importantly, to his buyout or how long he has left on his contract.......which is also likely tied to the mess in the illinois legislature vis a vis the budget or lack thereof.

And, not being at practices, team meetings and film sessions, we don't know the ratio of stroke to poke......also with the crowd noise, few know what is yelled: it could be encouragement, it could be competitive anger, it could be instruction that has to be yelled in order to be heard....
