That was a weak hitting team all season, and with Pendleton and Kohlkurst out, we were left with little more than Davis and Jaenisch in the lineup. Having said that, thanks to Ueckert's unexpected gem, we still were in a position to advance out of the losers bracket....and with our Big 4 and Degerman out of the pen, we would have been the favorites had we made it to the Supers.
Our biggest loss that year was when Andy Laroche decided to go Pro instead of coming to Rice. With his bat we would have been a much stronger hitting team. I think if we had let Degerman pitch more during the 2004 regular season, he could have contributed more and taken some of the pressure off of the Big 4. As it was, we had to bring Humber back on 2 days rest to try and finish off the Aggies. That didn't work.

Gray
I predict Otto goes by the 5th round, Myers by the 10th round and Gray somewhere in the mid-teens. That's why I think Gray has better than a 50% chance of returning to Reckling next year. I'd put Dane somewhere around 33% odds.
Worth noting that, as horrible as Gray was when he first returned to the lineup, he was practically unstoppable over the latter part of the season.
In his first 18 games (3/14 - 4/11), he hit .142/.260/.238.
Over his last 29 games, he hit .407/.485/.708.
His season basically had 3 parts:
(1) Over his first 11 games (3/14-3/31), he was completely hopeless. He struck out 36% of his plate appearances and hit a woeful .132/.250/.184.
(2) The next couple weeks (4/1-4/11), he reduced his strikeouts, but still wasn't getting any hits or hitting for power. He hit a woeful .120/.241/.320, but at least only struck out 7% of the time.
(3) Over the last 29 games, as noted above, he killed everything to the tune of .407/.485/.708 with more BB+HBP than K's and a 12% strikeout rate.
If scouts think the last 29 games is anything close to his true talent level, then he's getting drafted before the 10th round.
As an aside, the now-banned lauderdaleowl suggested benching Gray on 4/4 because of Gray's struggles. Not sure Rice even makes the CUSA tournament if that advice has been followed.
Bigs, it's not his offense, but his defense that will cause a slip in the draft. I've heard from several scouts that he doesn't have the range of a MLB middle infielder, and I'm not sure he provides the pop for LF or 1B.
It had to happen at some point. I agree his defense may be an issue. I didn't see it as range so much as his hands and where he fields the ball in relation to his torso.

Myers purported signed with the Tigers yesterday. No idea what signing bonus was. As for Otto...

The reason players sign quickly and don't visit is they cannot wait to get out. Perhaps back in the glory days former players visited Rice but recently how many players really come back to visit the program? Not many if any. Compare that to the programs where players will often visit. Myers could not wait to leave Graham.

[Oh goody-- another "first time" poster slamming the program and The OG. My guess it's simply another sig name of an existing poster.]
That's simply not true. Many former players come back to visit the program-- Humber, Rendon, Kohlkurst, Henley, Camerota, Aquino, Parrott, Reeves, just to name a few.
As for Myers, having spoken in the past with Dane and his mom, and I seriously question your comment above. He simply got a great opportunity and offer from the Tigers.

Yeah ok keep telling yourself that. If you would remove your head from his posterior for a moment you might see clearly. You are just another long time poster and disciple. Too clueless to form your own opinion or see reality. Your blind loyalty is pathetic and in other aspects admirable. Also a little alarming how much time you spend supposedly speaking to players and parents. You either are an over the top fan boy or stalker. Get a life dude.

Some more former players who regular come back to Reckling: Austin Davis, Vincent Sinisi, The Cruz family, Joe Savery, Damon Thames and Josh Rodgriduez. Why don't you admit you don't have a clue? As for my contact with some of the players and the parents, I did spend almost 2 weeks with the team in Cuba, and when in town I regularly attend the Friday Parents Tailgates (and hang with the parents at games when roadtripping).

So you know keep track of players who stop by the field on a daily basis. Keep protecting your messiah. Players over the past 10 years hate playing for Graham. They won't tell you because they know it goes from your lips to his ear. You have stalker traits or need to develop a hobby.
