MT instead of USM

Not a huge difference IMO

I expect 6-7 wins, pleased with more, disappointed with less. A lot will depend on others progress.

i am not familiar with what uab has recruited to come play or any holdovers, so please bear with me, but how the hell do you expect a brand new team to win 7 games? i can see 3 wins...maybe 4...alabama a/m, rice, nt, utep...

psst... He's on Old Dominion fan. He has just had the UAB logo as his avatar since the shutdown.

RE: 2017 Regular Season Wins O/U
It really is kind of impossible to give an O/U with us. I'm a pretty shameless UAB homer, but I think predictions of 3 or 4 wins (or less) is probably fair. The beginning of the season is crucial. We have:

1. Alabama A&M
2. @Ball St.
3. Coastal Carolina

I we can start 2-1 or 3-0 then I think it gets a lot easier to get to 4 or 5 wins. The big thing is just weathering the storm and keeping the positive moment moving forward over the next couple of years because we are finally staring a bright future for the program.

Having that opening game vs Alabama A&M on Stadium is ideal. I'll plan on taping it and watching after the UTEP game that day. Any idea how season ticket sales are going at UAB? I would imagine a good crowd for the opener, a win and momentum going into the rest of the season, regardless of the overall record.

We don't need the defense to be much improved. We just need a little improvement. Just one or two more stops per game would have been the difference between a 10-win season last year - even as bad as the defense was. Sure, I would love to have a good defense, because if we did we could potentially have a Western Michigan type season, but I will settle with some improvement on defense.

If we can get half the improvement that wkcc got out of its defense two years ago from that disastrous 2014 season then we should be in good shape to win the east. With Nix gone and Shafer in place, I believe we can see some measurable improvement. All three starting LB's back. Three of the four DB's back. The only question is the defensive line which graduated all four, but they didn't do anything last year anyway so no big loss there.

Expect to see a smaller, faster defense this year that attacks (rather than sitting back like Nix' defenses) gang tackles and puts pressure on opposing offenses. I believe this years defense will look similar to the defenses Manny Diaz had. Cheers.

I think I would take the over on Rice. But then I am Optimistic, not pessimistic.

I will have the opportunity to do so next week in Vegas.

Which 4 are the likely wins? The problem, in my opinion, is the home schedule where we face the toughest conference opponents. How many Ws from Stanford (Sydney), FIU, Army, Louisiana Tech, Southern Mississippi, and North Texas?

So Bailiff has to win on the road. UTEP, Houston, Pittsburgh, UAB, UTSA, and Old Dominion. The last three seem mirror opposites of the fading program Bailiff and Karlgaard lead.

This all reminds me of 2005 and the last year of Hatfield. That was an ugly 1-11 slog saved by post-Katrina Tulane and the homecoming game. I fear Bailiff is capable of pulling a Dana Dimel and putting up an 0-12 in an empty stadium. I hope I am way wrong.

LOL, I've held on this long I'm going to wait until the opener. I'll say, it feels like I've had this avatar forever so I can imagine how it must feel for UAB fans to have gone this long without football. Blaze On!

Well, ESE, it was more of a joke than a prediction. I learned long ago not to bet sports, and confine my gambling to one of the few venues in which I can win - poker. It's been decades since I placed a sports bet.

I hope too that you are wrong. More seriously now, I think much will depend on who the new QB is. I plan to take this season one game at a time.

I'm really not sure how season ticket sales are going. it's not something I've really kept up with. We had a good turn out for the spring game, so hopefully that's a positive sign. Since Legion Field is so large, a lot of people in the past have just bought tickets on game day.

I do expect we'll have a great crowd for the Alabama A&M game. Between the hype locally for our first game back and the big crowd that A&M will bring, I expect a great atmosphere.

They haven't release specific season ticket numbers, but did say around the spring game in April that they had already sold a record number. If true that would be north of the 22,500 season tickets sold during our 1-AA to 1-AA transition (when there was an actual attendance requirement to move up to the top level.

That's not how O/U works.

If the O/U is 7.5 and you win 8, that's hitting the over.

But if we go undefeated in conference play, we've already hit the over...

I think we beat Western, so you can still believe you're going to be the one to give us a conference loss and your Monarchs can finally get off the mat against us.

RE: 2017 Regular Season Wins O/U
ODU is interesting. They are really loaded but, with a huge question mark at QB. I cant be as high on them as most analyst are until I have some comfort in their QB play. If they can get league average play at QB, the final game of the year could certainly be for the East title. Really talented on offense (outside of QB) and they return almost everything in the secondary and DL (LB is a question mark, but only play 2 at a time, typically). Wilder also has won all the close games in the past; we either win or get blown out.

Albany, Charlotte, Rice should be fairly easy wins. NC and VT are losses.

They have to win 4 out of these to hit the over:

@UMass---probably a slight favorite
home to FAU-----really should be a win
@Marshall-----who knows with this team
home to WKY------ a winnable game, but Western Kentucky would be the favorite at this point
@North Texas-----really should be a win
@FIU-------probably wont sweep the road conference games, but this should be a win
@MTSU---- Assume a loss

Average QB play puts the team 8-4 at worst, IMO. But, I have no faith in the QB just yet.
