Question Offseason baseball thread
Too soon?

Will try to keep this updated with draft news, coaching moves, transfers, summer ball stats, scheduling, etc.

RE: Offseason baseball thread
Recruiting wise, we signed a small class. Only losing 3 seniors plus whatever we lose to the draft. In my opinion the headliner is Eric Hoard from Jones. Big first baseman, may have to DH on our level. Intimidating presence at the plate. Hit over 20 bombs last year and around 15 this year. Has some feel for hitting too. Hit around .400 this year. He'll fill a hole in our lineup nicely.

Also signed Fred Franklin, the center fielder from Jones. Can really run. If he doesn't go pro I would think he'll play center field. Hits pretty well and has some power. Probably a .280 with 5 home runs and 15-20 steal type player. Good Center Field defender. Chance to be a better biter than that but I'm just guessing based on the looks I've had at him.

We've signed 3 LH pitchers which is a big need. Don't really know much about any of them though.

Luke Reynolds, a transfer from State that sat out this year, will make a big impact next year. People around the team say he might be the best pure hitter on the team and has power also.

Our lineup will be lethal again. The question will be pitching depth. State had like 8 pitchers out for the year with injuries and everybody said their staff was razor thin. They still had about 8 90+ MPH guys to throw out there. We have maybe 7 total at full strength. They had about 15 before all their injuries. Velocity isn't everything. But if I have a choice between a staff with 15 90 MPH guys or one with 7, I'm taking the one with 15 every single time.

There are several ways to look at it. But if I'm a player on this team and all a record 50 wins gets me is sent home at my hometown regional, I'm getting the F*CK out of here at the first sign of a solid draft pic and signing bonus.

Players wash out because they can't hit a breaking ball, not because they can't catch-up to a fast ball. I'd take 7 strong arms and 7 who can make a ball circle the plate every time.

What does anyone know about Montenegro, who sat out this year?

Some good bats are going to have to transfer out. I don't even see any way we have the roster spots for all of these guys.

The lineup depth is impressive but how much of that do we actually need? I would have traded out two or three guys from our 13-man rotating lineup for a good pitcher in a heartbeat.

Eagle9 or others, thoughts on some of our non-seniors' draft stock. Know you weren't buying McCarty going very high. Braley seems like a question mark--no idea where MLB teams would see him fitting in the field. Or is he a better prospect as a pitcher?

i dont see braley getting drafted early at all. def not as a pitcher. hes a good college pitcher and great college hitter. i could see him staying another year. i think he should.

mccarty will get drafted, certainly much earlier than braley would. prob early enough to make him have to leave is what im thinking. not a top 5 rounder or anything, but enough to take a big league contract. hope im wrong and he sticks around.

Guy I talked to today seems to think that last night was a "gamechanger" for Braley and McCarty. Both could come back to complete some unfinished business.

Munz has said a couple times on the HA live chats that Montenegro is Mason Irby 2.0. He's already started his summer season and is hitting .280 with the Acadiana Cane Cutters.

That was my thought. The way this season ended had to leave a sour taste in their mouth. Hopefully it brings them back with some fire next season.

McCarty won't go that high. He has slightly above average stuff that is very hittable if he isn't perfectly locating his pitches. Good college pitcher.

I'm worried about Braley the most. He's 91-94 with a good slider and change. That's big league stuff. However, he's going to get penalized heavily for being under 6 feet tall.

You can buy a lot of sugar with a signing bonus, or you could take a David Clark line drive off your knee defending the SUNWACUSA crown.

What you do with those other 7-8 spots depends on whether you prefer to diversify or just load up on spares. Young guys throwing 90+ are hell to face, but they aren't the most durable things in the world.

If he goes I wish we'd hire Richie Haralson from NW Mississippi. He was here for the 2009 run. Great coach, great guy.

Harrelson is at Northeast. I believe he was well liked here. Would be interesting if he made the move back. I believe he was a volunteer assistant during his time here.

I'd like to see us make a run at La Tech's pitching coach Ostrander "IF" Federico should leave. Not sure what he's making at La Tech but surely we could match or increase his pay you'd think.
