Our hitting will be fine. We have good replacements for what we are losing. Pitching will be the question mark.

Hitting will be fine.

I'm sure we can replace Burdeaux and Braley with good hitters but Burdeaux's combination of base running and power isn't easy to find. Nor is Braley's combination of power and patience at the plate. Unless someone can get on base at a 45 percent clip, that means that teams will be able to pitch around Wallner more.

Plus they were our best right handed hitters--which is big because we have a coach who swears by the platoon system lineup.

Our lineup will be good, for sure. But our lineup may need to be great given what we lose on the mound.

RE: Offseason baseball thread
If Braley, McCarty, and Roberts all leave (seems likely), I think Berry/Fed need to give serious consideration to moving Wallner to the weekend. Feel like if he's healthy, he would overwhelm SUNWACUSA bats.

Wallner
Powell (depends on if he comes back from TJ surgery well)
Weirich (freshman lefty out of Missouri, my somewhat bold prediction is that he sneaks in the rotation next year)

Pick one of Smith, Strickland, or Keys for midweek.

That's a pretty competent rotation, especially in our league.

BTW, looks like Kyle Keith will sign with the Rangers.

Highly doubt we'll see Wallner brought in as a starter. I think we'll groom him to be a closer. And I don't think all of those players leave.

I suspect you are right but I don't like it.

I hoped the lesson from Sandlin this year was that the closer role is stupid and that you use your best pitchers when you need them. Not in certain, limited situations. It seemed as though he wanted Wallner to play that role before he got hurt.

There is no more valuable role that he can play on this team than as a weekend starter (if he has the stuff to do it)

We'll need Coach9's expert opinion on this.

Hearing that we may avoid the worst case scenario with the draft. Stay tuned.

RE: Offseason baseball thread
The counter argument to that is that many times the most critical situations in a game take place in later innings. And you want you best pitcher in when the game is on the line the most. I am not a fan of a traditional closer. I prefer to have a "relief ace" that you use in the most important part of the game, whether it be in the 9th or the 6th.

Some people would prefer to have a pet unicorn, but they don't exist, either.

It seems a sure bet Roberts will pass on his final year at Southern Miss to begin his professional career. The same can be said of Keith, who told The (Oregon) Register-Guard he’s “pretty confident” he too will turn pro.

For the record, we also learned star Jones County Junior College outfielder Fred Franklin informed teams he would be joining the Golden Eagles if he wasn’t drafted before the 10th round. So the dynamic, toolsy athlete will suit up in Black and Gold in 2018.

That leaves Braley and McCarty, both of whom at last check were still weighing their options.

My gut tells me the latter will forego his final year of eligibility. As for Braley, it seems his departure from Southern Miss isn’t as much of a foregone conclusion as some may have assumed.

Heard this AM from a pretty good source that both McCarty and Braley will sign.

I was told that something about the money wasn't right with Braley and the Marlins. Wasn't a done deal but heard he was leaning toward staying in school. Could be wrong, but hope I'm right.

Latest rumblings are that Caillet turned down an offer from State to be their recruiting coordinator. Good for him.

I heard Braley got an offer substantially over slot, but who knows
?

I hope he stays, but based on where the number came from, I wouldn't blame him for signing.
