Debbie Yow has done some good things. She has brought some stability back, and made some improvements, after some questionable ADs before her. I think she has hit her peak. I don't think she can take the program much further.

So far I've been very pleased with Whit Babcock. Consider that he has hired Buzz Williams for the Men's Basketball team and Justin Fuente for the Football team... that's a pretty good hiring record so far. He's working to increase donations and Hokie Club members, too... great job (so far).

RE: How do you feel about the state of your athletic department?
On October 21st this year Tom will celebrate 20 years leading The University of Louisville Athletic Department. During his time in Louisville Tom has brought us from nearly being kicked out of CUSA, through The Big East and American to The ACC.

In 1997 when Tom took over at The UofL our athletic budget was 11 million. The budget for 2017- 18 will be $104 million. (Thanks DFD for correction!)

Tom built new facilities, encouraged donors and hired coaches. He's been promoted to Vice President of Athletics and is a one man hiring committee. He's made one "bad" hire since coming to Louisville.

In an eight month stretch between November 2012 and June 2013, Louisville accepted an invitation to join what was/is most Louisville fan's dream conference The ACC. Beat Florida in The Sugar Bowl, played for a National Title in Women's Basketball, won a National Title in Men's Basketball and traveled to Omaha for Baseball's College World Series.

This season we have the Heisman Trophy winner and College Baseball Player of the Year in Red and Black.

Since joining Louisville, Tom has said thanks but no thanks to the AD jobs at Indiana, Ohio State, Florida, Texas and Tennessee and those are just the ones we know about.

Louisville was lucky to get Tom and even luckier to keep him. He's taken a quiet sleepy college basketball town and turned it into "The Best College Sports Town in America."

Looks like Buzz is on the list for the Ohio State job.

No surprise if he's on Ohio State's list... question is, is Ohio State on HIS list?
(BTW, did I mention how much I hate Ohio State Athletics?)

Op is confusing. Title states athletic department, question states AD which typically goes over as "athletic director".

For GT:
- Athletic Department: Mildly incompetent, DEEP in debt, saddled with bad contracts and a badly planned expansion of the football stadium, has struggled for two decades now to find a unifying cohesive vision post-Homer Rice. Maybe that is fixed now that ....

- Athletic Director: So far, A+, seems like the perfect fit. Worked under Homer Rice. Did great work at ETSU, UCF, and Oregon State. Alumni and football letterwinner under Bill Curry. This could be the missing piece.

The budget hasn't been that low in a few years. This is from the CJ 2 weeks ago

"ULAA proposed a $104 million budget for 2017-18, $8 million more than 2016-17."

I meant athletic dept., as I assumed "AD" would be the obvious abbreviation for ath dept. in the context of "how do you feel about your athletic department," but it's clearly not based on several replies thus far. I've updated the post, but I'm not sure how to update the poll question itself. You might have to help me out and/or God edit it for me.

Things are on their way to being super great but not quite there. Whit is the wizard of bringing in good coaches. He did great at Cincinnati and he's done great so far bringing in Buzz and Fuente. I'm sure his upcoming baseball hire will be just as good with his baseball background and ties to the sport. Bringing in good coaches is always the number 1 purpose of an athletic director but VT was sitting at 9th in budget in the ACC. That's not going to cut it for a school that wants to be good in Football and Basketball.

The Athletics department was still operating in the black in spite of decreasing revenues due to 4 bad football seasons but something had to be changed. VT stepped into the 21st century by tying Football tickets to a per seat donation. Something 121 other schools in FBS had already done. More was needed and that came in the form of the drive for 25.

Having on 10,000 active donors wasn't enough. So Whit created the drive for 25 to increase that number to 25,000. So far so good. VT is on pace to reach 25,000 in 6 years I believe. With Frank Beamer being the front man and chief donations seeker, Whit has the VT athletics department on pace to being Super Great in a matter of years but we're not there yet.

I have hope for our New AD and that he can overcome the mess he was left.... The hiring of Bobblehead Bobinski and Basketball Coach Brian Gregory along with scheduling two FCS games in one season 2008 & 2013 (Oh we are in danger in 2019 of having two FCS games because of scheduling issues)... We also have issues with our Baseball program....

We have a Hornets nest going on at the GTAA thank god we have Paul Johnson leading the Football program

I think Wake's AD is in the best shape it's been in a long time. Our Athletic Director will probably retire soon.

Football- Coach locked into a long term contract coming off a bowl win.
Men's Basketball- Back in the NCAA tournament, back to producing 1st round NBA draft picks, recruiting picking up
Soccer- National Title game appearance, regularly ranked#1 in the country, extremely successful coaching change
Baseball- Back in the Top 25 and at least a super regional appearance, might need to replace our coach
Men's Tennis- regularly ranked #1, challenging UVa's dominance in conference
Golf- Both teams doing well with room for improvement

Massive investment in facilities.

RE: How do you feel about the state of your athletic department?
Um...maybe a B minus?

Our previous athletic director was a joke...way over his head at an institution like FSU. Rumor was that Jimbo Fisher had zero respect for him and showed it. He was totally adrift during the realignment crisis years, and FSU not having a wartime consigliere during those years was abominable. Just an absolute zero as a leader.

I'm not an insider, but Stan Wilcox is, by most accounts...competent. Finances seem to be in pretty decent order all things considered, and there seems to pretty good alignment up and down between president, AD and football coach. Fisher seems to be getting most of what he wants and needs, and at the same time I'm not hearing about the open dissension/disrespect of the Spetman era. If it's still happening, it's quieter. I don't think Fisher is necessarily and easy guy to deal with, he expects a lot, and his frequent leveraging of every coaching job that comes open is a PR minefield that seems to have been handled as deftly as could be expected.

He's also managed big time upgrades in the basketball arena and a general upgrading of that program, seen in much improved recruiting, which is quite a feat given the level of basketball support at FSU.

And as a Notre Dame and Duke guy, I think FSU has more of a seat at the table as far as the ACC goes than ever before. When Wilcox talks about ACC matters, he talks like an integral player, not like someone just along for the ride waiting for UNC or Swofford to update him.

So, I think he's...fine.

On the other hand, my biggest problem isn't anything fundamental about something he's done...it's just that I want to think a program like FSU deserves a superstar type at A.D. I don't get that sense. He hasn't had to make a major high profile coaching changes...I don't know if there's anything to make you feel as an FSU fan that he's definitely going to be able to make the blockbuster move, or outmaneuver some of the other ADs out there. I'd feel better if he'd had his experience with real football program schools.

Mere competence is an upgrade, and having more weight in the ACC is an upgrade. But I don't know if we've got a real top-10, top-15 type A.D. like I think FSU should have. I think people would tend to easily rank 4-5 other ADs ahead of him in the ACC alone, and while that might not be fair as he hasn't had the opportunity to make a high profile move, it's nonetheless not something encouraging as an FSU fan.
