Throwback Video: 1963 W&M Homecoming
Found this gem on YouTube the other day, and had to make an article about it. It's quite a lengthy video, without sound -- but it has color! And don't worry, you don't have to watch the whole thing. We have you covered, noting the minute markers/high points of the video at the bottom of the article.

Enjoy.

Aweaome. I think I saw Sandy getting hustled by a 16 handicap in the golf segment.

RE: Throwback Video: 1963 W&M Homecoming
Some observations:

*the timelessness of the Sunken Garden footage...it is exactly the same today if you walked out there this morning

*How much better and more creative the Parade floats of the era were back then. No comparison to today's weak creations

*The Indian nickname of the period evident on the floats...And how about the student dressed as an Indian on the horse, Wahoo, and some of the cheerleaders in Indian garb

*How many people wore ties, jackets and fedoras to the game

*The great W&M president Paschall on the field at halftime

*We're playing West Virginia, then a member of our Southern Conference, at home. We'll never see
teams like West Virginia at Zable (then Cary Field) again

*Coach Milt Drewer, then in his last season at W&M, on the sideline

*View of the old press box with its pathetic, useless small overhang to "protect" from inclement weather. No longer the press box, it remains the same today except for a somewhat improved
cover.

*Dr. Varner and the old W&M band

*We lost that game to the Mountaineers, 20-16

Looks like that was filmed in 2004. I see very little difference with the exception of the 3-wheel golf cart and sideline trampoline tricks.

This very much matches my memories of W&M homecomings as a child, although I was too young in '63 to remember this particular one. My recollection is that the effort put into the floats, etc., started to drop off in the 1970's.

Interesting that in 1963, hillbilly, moonshine and outhouse humor directed at WVU passed without objection. By 2003, much milder WVU humor at the Continental Tire Bowl was used by U.Va. as justification for abolishing their Pep Band.

We all take ourselves too seriously nowadays, I guess.

My favorite float from the 70s was when we played Vanderbilt for homecoming. One of the frats had a float with a guy with a dynamite plunger blowing up a bathroom door only to show a frat brother sitting on a toilet. The sign said "Blow off the Commode Doors" (commodores). I thought that was pretty cleaver.

I agree about Vandy. We played them in 1960. They had Tom Moore. We got beat 21-0 as I recall. The game was closer than the score. My daughter got a double major and is a proud 'dore.
I think this film is semi cheesy. Too much HC court and honor guard and too little action on the gridiron. Those WVU teams were good.

Frank, I figured you might spot yourself in there, somewhere.
