LBSU has been known as the 49ers but the baseball team goes by The Dirtbags. Anybody have an idea why?

I never heard them be called the War Eagles. Only hear the chant War Eagle during a kickoff but still called the Tigers.

I think they also let a trained eagle fly in and around the stadium for a few laps prior to kick off at their home games. 07-coffee3

We are the Tigers. We have been called the Plainsmen but that's just 1930's style sportswriters who were always looking for another moniker. War Eagle is a cheer, which started as a taunt. At the first Auburn / Georgia game in 1892 one of the Georgia alums had an old eagle that he supposedly found wounded on the same battlefield where he had been wounded. We he came to the bird was the only living thing around him. So he nursed it back to health and kept it as a pet. It was late in the game and we were tied 0 - 0 when the bird broke loose from its tether. The Georgia fans started trying to call the bird back down for the distraught Georgia alum. The birds name was War Eagle. While they tried to call the bird back Auburn scored twice and defeated the Dogs. Anytime we were behind in a game to Georgia the Auburn students would repeat the calling the bird. In time it stuck and was used for all of our games, only now most Auburn folks use it as a greeting to other Auburn folks wherever they meet. I was in Jerusalem on the Temple Mount and was wearing an Auburn baseball cap when another Auburn person saw me and shouted War Eagle! You never know where you are going to hear it!
