I worked with a great kid (other than having been a VT student) years ago that was doing his community service for driving drunk and then attempting to elude police, ending in a single car accident. At first, he was trying to do weekend jail in Christiansburg and had some horrible stories to tell, so he went for the something like 600 hours of community service, instead. He had to drop out of school to do it, but was a super hard working guy and learned a lot from the experience. He knew it was a knucklehead thing to do, but it happened and he did his time. He continued to work as a Volunteer for a couple of years after that.

I gotta chime in. What Derek did was incredibly dumb and the courts sought and he was convicted of a felony. No matter who it is, you can't have someone with a felony record on the team. What does that say to the patents of potential recruits and those adjective to leave prior to this incident.

I hope coach Wilder holds his son to the same standards he has set for other players. Accountability is just about lost with our youth in today's world.

I still live with the what ifs after being told I could no longer wrestle in high school because of a foolish night out with 6 buddies after our homecoming game. Luckily for us, the media never got involved and social media was nonexistent. Outsiders assumed my career ended due to medical so I dodged the questions but lost all college interest as did my buddies who had offers for baseball and football. We all did our 1000 hours of community service and became better people with no record.

I don't think I'm allowed to visit this page anymore.... something about associations with known convicts.... that's what my parole officer says anyway!

Agreed. Even if one can make the case the DW deserves a second chance, the fact that he is the coach's son definitely presents bad optics. Get a second chance somewhere else.

I am really torn on this. On the one hand, I don't think the crime that he did was bad enough to warrant ruining his life or kicking him off the team, but at the same time, I feel that felonies should probably lead to players being kicked off the team. I guess my issues may be with the legal system, and me not thinking this victimless incident should rise to the level of a felony.

But as a parent, I can see why Coach Wilder would like to keep him here. He can keep and eye on him and make sure he does the right thing. It would be easy just to say go find another school but in a way that would be like passing the buck. It is a very unique situation. I'm torn on which side of the fence to be on here. Hopefully, Coach Wilder will come out an address the situation and explain his reasons. I think with all he has done here at ODU, he has earned that platform.

He ran from Police on his motorcycle knowing it was capable of leaving the police in his dust. He had no intention of stopping until he crashed and ate sh**. Glad he got caught and upset he's still on the team. Send him somewhere else.

Think its funny how some people just go out and get motorcycles thinking they can just jump on them like riding a bicycle. Watching the video of him wiping out was comical. Glad he wasnt seriously hurt but clearly has no business owning one if he cant properly ride the thing without riding directly into a guard rail from some several hundred feet away.

Guess he wanted to be like all the other goons who go out, buy motorcycles, and dont know the first damn thing about riding one except vroom vroom.

Bobby, your son is a convicted felon, he doesnt belong on ODU's roster.

Guess he isnt allowed to own a firearm anymore either...dumba**

Little too much vitriol I think.
I actually think he may have crashed while trying to pull off to the side of the road and the shadows of the overpass threw him off (pun intended). He certainly wasn't going max speed when he crashed.
I think two wreckless driving tickets and evading police warrant more than the equivalent of a medical redshirt year. He sat out while he was injured.... is that enough punishment?

No its not enough. Him being injured and not playing has nothing to do with his case or punishment.

He didnt not play football because someone kept him from doing so. He didnt play because he was hurt. While unfortunate and all, he should still face the consequences of his FELONY charge, not football injury. Therefore, in direct response to his FELONY indictment, ODU should say sorry but you'll never play football for ODU again.

Ol Booby's son getting special treatment...

ODU basketball player gets caught by admin (NOT POLICE) for partaking in an illegal substance. Never any charges filed whatsoever, but when the football coaches son runs from Police on his motorcycle, gets caught and CHARGED WITH FELONY ALLUDING, they can remain on the team? Yeah talk about BULLSH**

Nope, absolutely not.

Like someone else said, accountability is all but gone in todays time and this is exactly why. Give him the same short stick you handed out to every other player who got charged with a felony.

Special exception for coaches kid though.

I'm only 30 years old but I've always had the tough love approach just like my parents had with me. Its made me into an old school thinking younger guy but I wouldnt have it any other way. Too many millennials now are soft as hell and cant handle punishment. I'm sorry but he ran from Police. He deserves everything that should come his way, especially after already having wreckless charges on his driving record. Sounds like a dud to me. Damn sure looks like one in his mug shot too.

While I agree with a lot of what you said, there is one thing different about this case (other than coach's son) and that is that it was a victimless crime.
No assault, no theft, etc.

I could go along with either decision in this situation.

You are talking as though you know he's going to be on the team. Why not wait until you know for sure. Personally I think he's gone. If BW is letting him use the gym I don't see the big deal. He's helped out most of the kids he's dismissed. Just not seeing real favorable treatment as much as the concern there will be.

The way Bobby Wilder said Derek is working out with his TEAMMATES and preparing for spring practice leads me to believe he is staying at ODU.

Well that does raise some eyebrows.

I'm still willing to wait and see. I find it very hard to believe BW will abandon his principles. For now I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he just worded things poorly. I can see how his statement would be taken as meaning Derek is on the team, but I'll "give him a mulligan" for now.
