Simon whatshisname's music history class was an A and I only went to the 2 test dates. Entire basketball team took the class together and sat up in the balcony of that hall.

RE: Random Thoughts From Bearcat Nation
Geez, am I the only one old enough to remember Shipley's on McMillan? For those of us 18 or older, a glass of 3.2% draft cost a quarter back in 1959. No craft beers in those days, but there were a lot of breweries in Cincy -- Hudepohl, Burger, Schoenling, Bavarian, Wunderbrau, Wiedemann's (just across the river), and others. The place was owned by a guy named Bill Powell, who was a classmate of both my parents at CCM in the 1930s. Always attired in black trousers, a starched white shirt and black bowtie, and armed with a cane, he stationed himself at the end of the bar on a stool during open hours.

I spent many an evening at Shipley's and met my future wife there (she was Xavier's 1958 Homecoming Queen). A month from now, we'll celebrate our 52nd wedding anniversary and a union and odyssey that produced three kids and saw us set up housekeeping in Ohio, Arizona, Mississippi, both Dakotas, and finally, on the sunset slope of the Rockies in western Colorado.

My dad worked the door at The Varsity Mug Club back in the '60s. Said he grasped the law of large numbers by asking out every single girl who came to the bar without a date. Any old timers have memories from that place?

In the early 2000s we used to go to In the Wood for 50 cent draft night (I think it was Thursday?). Those were always a mess. Big Reds was grimey too, but fun.

I saw some great concerts at Ripley's. Mainly reggae: Burning Spear, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse. Also some late 90s-early 2000s rap that was fantastic, like Talib Kweli. What about the free shows that the school used to put every summer? It'd be on that big blacktop parking lot off of Jefferson and it would get to be hot as balls. Saw De La Soul, Mos Def, Goodie Mob, Outkast, Kanye West and several I can't even remember now. Those still a thing?

History of Rock and Roll with Mr. Allen my sophomore year in 2007...god, his opening monologue was great:

"Guys...I'm the only lecturer in CCM who doesn't have a doctorate, and the only reason why I'm here is because I took a hit of acid in 1972 and fell in love with Rock and Roll. What do you say we play some music?"

I remember looking at some of the other players right after that one and thinking, "This was the best decision I've made in college" 03-lmfao

In the mid-90s I took a class titled The Sociology of Sports. Can't remember the profs name but all the athletes were in the class. We just sort of discussed current events in the sporting world, race relations/gender and sports, all the stuff we do on message boards now. Not only did I get an A in the course but I think I had above a 100% average (bonus points on exams). I don't think I even opened the textbook.

Did Kevin Grace teach that class (I think he is a Cincinnati sports historian)? I took one from him (late '90s, early 00's) and there were several athletes in the class (including punter Mammarelli maybe?). The text book was Basketball Jones. Another good class was Zoo Life. Literally went to the zoo, spent an hour in a classroom talking about animal adaptations and then walked around the zoo observing them for an hour. I knew it was going to be good when half of the baseball team was in there...it didn't disappoint (it actually was an interesting class). I saved some of these for my senior year/co-op quarters for variety.

Grace has been teaching that (along with quite a few history of Cincinnati/UC courses) for awhile. He's an awesome guy, definitely knows his stuff about UC and sports. There was a pretty awesome course I took my senior year with Dr. Livingston about the History of the American University...very interesting how far we've come as an educational system and what really motivated me to work in Higher Ed (my Bachelors Degree is in Civil Engineering oddly enough).

I took that class. Simon was a pretty cool guy.

RE: Random Thoughts From Bearcat Nation
Simon Anderson taught the History of Jazz and Popular Music in the late 80's. Was a great class, plus it fulfilled my engineering requirement for a 300 level elective. Never misses class because Simon was so interesting. Even went out and caught him playing in a club once.

He also taught some sort of Music Appreciation class where you had to go to a lab and listen to certain music every so often. Not near as good of a class. I heard it really went downhill when the athletes discovered the class a few years later. Simon became a bitter man dealing with that bunch.

That class was almost 100% engineers and athletes. 300 people in folding chairs and Simon up front with his record player. I took the class a few years after you (with your brother actually).

Bought the unbound book at Kinkos and put it into a 3-ring binder. The next time I opened the binder was the day I deposited the book into the recycling bin. An easy but interesting class and one of the more memorable I took at UC.

Looked up Kevin Grace's bio and on Facebook and by golly I think that is my prof from that class (it's been over 20 years so my memory is a little fuzzy). It was a cool class.

Anyone frequent the album stores around campus back in the late 80's? This was before compact discs took over the scene but I believe there was a place called Wizard's near Short Vine and Moe's (used albums) on Short Vine. There was one more place on Calhoun St. (used) but the name escapes me right now.

I believe before Wizard's, the record store in that area was named Culture 7 Records.

However, we loved the free peanuts (everyday at first, that only on certain nights by graduation), but mostly we liked the beer being served in Mason jars. The shoddy wood floor also reminded us of bars in Mercer county.

JC's had the most dangerous feature I can recall, as the restroom was in the basement, and the steps were both short and covered in slippery paint. You could count on seeing someone take the fall every night.

Also, I must have been part of hundreds of rounds of kamikaze's there.

Wasn't the bathroom for Uncle Woody's in the basement too?

One night my brother went into the bathroom at Uncle Woody's and the sink had been torn off the wall by some angry drunk. Water spraying everywhere.

My favorite Clifton bar was Christy's. I was sad when I heard it was being torn down.

Favorite Clifton bar was hands down - Cooter's. Friday $3 happy hour from 4 to 7 - Thursday and Sunday was Beat Club Night - lot's of R&B, New Wave, and Industrial mixed together.

Surprising, maybe not, that no one dances any more. The Lighthouse/Burgundy's/Prime Time and Cooter's fell away to micro-breweries and folk singers. Caddy's/Porky's (January's)/Tomorrow's/Glass Menagerie/Conservatory/The Metro were some great dance clubs in Cincy - all gone.
