What year in Calhoun?

I was 2001/02 Calhoun... I am back pretty often so I've seen it gradually, but it's crazy how different it is.

Was it Jupiter that was the joint downstairs on Short Vine for arcade games and billiards? A hidden gem.

Help me out...was beer drinking allowed on the bridge during the 80's? My memory says yes, but I'm thinking that cannot be right.

Jupiter and Beyond - way back when.

Vaguely I think you are right. I know on more than one occasion my fraternity hauled a keg into Nippert and we drank from it during the entire game while sitting above the old locker room entrance.

When I started in '87 it was constantly mentioned as something that was allowed "a few years ago". I think it stopped when the drinking age jumped to 21.

When was the bridge removed? Not much of a landmark but a hell of a congested choke point around noon each day. ROTC used to practice rappelling under the bridge - probably a 15' drop at best.

Veterans Memorial Bridge withstood many protests in its 36-year lifespan, including this 1991 gathering of students both for and against Desert Storm, America's first military involvement in Iraq. It couldn't, however, stand up to progress. The short span between McMicken Hall and Tangeman University Center served as UC's informal public square from 1965 to 2001, when it was razed along with the south wing of TUC

I remember walking out of class, seeing that mess and my only thought being "damn not going that way". Every time the "No Blood for Oil" chant got going a counter chant of "Blood for Oil" would drown them out.

I love how UC's website have these 1991 photos in black and white to make it look like a picture from the 1940's or something. We really did have color photos and even automobile machines in 1991.

Sorry, just seeing this now. It was 94. The "quiet" floor. 01-wingedeagle

I can't believe that it hasn't been condemned yet. The elevators were insanely unreliable and totally unsafe.

Back in the mid-80's, there was a guy on the 12th floor of Calhoun who had a camera, laminator and the official Ohio DMV license paper. He would make you a fake I.D. for whatever age you wanted for $50.

Wasn't the 12th floor (maybe the 11th) also the floor where a dealer organized all the residents to have heat lamps in their closets to grow his product?

haha. i don't know anything about that....
Besides, i think that was before my time. That being said, I did see a lot of "activity" while i was there. I'm glad to have only been living there for a year. I was off campus on Euclid after that. I was on my roof one night drinking beer with a friend and watched some dude try to break into my car. He was a little shaken up when i told him that I wouldn't do that.
The good ole days!

12th Floor was the Engineering floor when I was there in the mid-00's...man how times change lol. All my CEE budies would come over to my room in Turner and hang with the rest of the soccer team to get out of that hell hole.

RE: Random Thoughts From Bearcat Nation
Graduated from CoB in 09. Last two years didn't have classes on Fridays somehow, so we'd go up to Woodys at noon. Buffalo chicken wrap, 50 cent nati lights and epic scenery from the front patio area when the weather was nice. This was before Buzzy sold Woodys and the new owners closed the pit in the back and turned every evening into a Greek dance party (I was Greek so I feel safe saying that).

Killed many a brain cell there and Mac's, Murphy's and Christy's. Really miss Christy's.

We'd buy our beer at the stop and rob on top of Moerlein too. Think it was Jimbo who worked there after he left Woodys. Awesome dude.

Have a ton of stories but one that comes to mind is taking an empty keg shell to some park near campus (memory is fuzzy) on a snow day and attempting to sled down a hill while wearing viking helmets we somehow acquired. Didn't work well but scared the hell out of some of the famous that were attempting to have legitimate sledding experiences.

RE: Random Thoughts From Bearcat Nation
I lived in Calhoun 69/70. I worked part time had to work weekends started at 7 AM. I parked my car in the dirt/gravel lot that was to the right of Calhoun looking at Calhoun Hall. Many a morning I could not get out of the lot being blocked in as parking was limited. I wrote many a letter to UC that they should use the Hill and put in a parking garage with businesses on street level. Whether UC did what I suggested because of me or in spite of me I wish I had the money to have purchased that unusable property and started the transformation of Calhoun Street. UC had dramatically changed. No more lot #1, power plant, plywood press box, leaking football locker room under nippert. Nice bars on McMillan. The Pickle Barrel. The physical properties in and around the UC campus have clearly made UC a better place.

Back when there was McDonalds on campus what was the bar in TUC? I remember big chairs and beers there. Seemed anyone could order one.

Rhine Room. I spent an entire winter drinking Rainier since it was $0.75 for a tall boy.
