I'd say just give the ball the Stevens, who is a senior and has at least pitched well in mop-up. Maybe Nelms? Carroll probably shouldn't see action in a game where the margin is single-digits again this year.
Probably doesn't matter, as the max we could hope for from any of them is three solid innings
If Stevens can go 3 innings without melting down, that'd be great. Maybe get Nelms in an inning or 2. Davis is an option, as well as Wallner.
Really do worry about playing 6 games (if we win tonight) in 5 days leading up to regionals. Berry and Federico must be very careful with the pitchers. McCarty, Braley, and Roberts need to be off limits. Sandlin and Keys probably too.
I honestly wish we could just end the tournament now--with momentum and not exhausting our staff.
I'm not saying that I want us to lose tonight. But I'm not going to be very upset if we do. This is a definite high risk-low reward situation here.
Agree on the three you mentioned being off limits. McCarty and Braley: Hell no. For me, Roberts would be my #4 starter...so, I'm not using him after throwing 70+ today.
If I'm Berry, Sandlin is done. MAYBE one or two batters if we get through to tomorrow but no more after that, no matter the situation. Two appearances and 62 pitches in the last three days. He's not efficient in terms of pitch count, so it isn't like you can plan on just bringing him in for a quick, easy inning.
I would be alright throwing Keys for about 20-30 pitches tomorrow. I'm still skeptical of his value in regional play.
I could see Smith throwing a couple of innings tomorrow...unless Berry is planning on using him in the first or second round of the regional.
But especially tonight, this is a situation where you are just giving the ball to your usual mop-up guys and hoping they can get through some innings and the offense can keep up.
