It would seem that can't even run their own business very well and we are allowing them to dictate how the MAC is run in terms of that revenue stream. I have grown to dislike ESPN more and more every year. What was great in the 80's and 90's has now shown how greedy college sports has become for the very large universities. I heard someone bragging about the fact that the UM spring practices in Rome was paid for by a donor. Amateur sports at it's finest.
Been downhill ever since they dropped Aussie rules football.

Here's why:
- History: for the last quarter century there's been more Thursday night Labour Day weekend games than Saturday. People are creatures of habit.
- The first Rocket Football game of the year is always spectacle of debauchery--a place to see and be seen
- 95% of our resident students (i.e. those who attend games) head home on Friday-- likely with a hangover.
- Season ticket holders head "Up North" to close their cottages/lake houses while others will head to the Lake Erie Islands. Hardly nobody stays in town
For Labour Day Weekend; no doubt in my mind we are way more likely to garner 22,000 for a Thursday night game vs 15,000 for a Saturday game
UT starts a week later this year(Aug 28th) and classes run through Friday(Sept 1)with only Labor Day off. OSU has opened on Saturday 9 of the last 10 years, the Thursday telecast will hurt attendance. If you were a Rocket fan you'd be better off closing the lake cottage on Sept 9th when UT heads out to Nevada. Certainly could go to Put in Bay on Sunday or Monday. College students will either go home after Weds classes or stay and party over Saturday. My guess is 13-14,000 on Thursday or 17,000-19,000 on Saturday because of the OSU game. I'm thinking that some conflicted OSU/UT fans would show up on Saturday, but not Thursday, offsetting the loss of a guesstimated 2,500 students.
Can't believe ESPN money will be there forever and need to work on getting fans to the Glass Bowl.

I spoke with Coach Candle during basketball season. He told me that he understands the fan experience aspect of Saturday football. He then added that he also likes to recruit. MACtion gives exposure that helps recruiting.
MOB has told me that MACtion isn't going to end anytime soon.

And of course this would be an opportunity for a Saturday game and has nothing to do with MACTION.

I hope they do move it.

Playing at roughly the same time as tOSU is the only downside I see. Students will be gone by Saturday and all but the most die hard Rockets fans will have higher priorities that Saturday as well.

So does a full stadium and traditions. Maybe Coach Candle can use his imagination to recruit instead of hiring an on-line service. Does he really think non-UT people (with no bet on the line) are choosing the UT game to watch real-time on ESPN3? With all the options available? Unless that mid-week ESPN arranged game gets a home game against a team we'd no other way get a home game, it's not recruiting crap. Stop being lazy, carry a tape.

Most of my debauchery ended after I ceased my education there. Of course, I started in 1971 and took my last classes in 1990 so I had a nice run.

I think ESPN even has Monday games that week which is a bit strange.

I have to agree, A Saturday game wouldn't draw any better maybe worse than Thursday. There will be 17000 if we are lucky on Thursday however it may be worth a test try. What to lose?

I already closed up my summer home, I rarely debauch anymore and Rocket season ticket holders DON't head for the Lake Erie islands. I am one. I know. So, yeah, Saturday is good for me.

RE: Thanks ESPN!
Thursday or Saturday doesn't make a difference to me. Same time as tosu or not I could give a crap. I do however care if it is televised or streamed. I'm too far to make the trip. If it isn't televised or streamed, I won't be watching. I know many of you live within driving distance and can be season ticket holders, a 10 hour drive is too much for me to make a home game in person. I catch all the games I can when the team travels East. Otherwise, I'm all for doing what is needed to be streamed or televised.
