Thursday and Friday don't matter - there needs to be at least one Big Ten-controlled game on ABC (not just ESPN) every Saturday. Penn State is the defending Big Ten champ and he largest brand name out of the other options you listed, so I'm not shocked at the choice. Washington-Rutgers as a P5 vs. P5 game is the only other one that might have been considered.

EDIT: Washington-Rutgers is a Friday night game, so it wasn't an option for ABC, anyway. So, ABC's choices were limited to a bunch of G5 vs. Big Ten games, which meant that carrying a Penn state game makes the most sense out of that group.

I'd be pretty sure that you are wrong that ABC has to have a game from Big Ten on every single weekend. I'm sure that Fox doesn't have that- and ESPN is a whole hell of a lot stronger than FS1 is.

Also, I'd be pretty certain that Fox got the Washington/Rutgers game.

For selfish reasons I was hoping ABC went with Iowa vs Wyoming.....but come to think of it, Wyoming had a good year last year, and Iowa is always very solid so maybe that would be the best matchup anyway?

I'm pretty sure you're very wrong here - the Big Ten has *always* had an OTA requirement with every contract that it has had for the past 30 years. The fact that an Akron-PSU game is getting national OTA coverage on ABC is prima face evidence that an OTA requirement exists (or else ABC wouldn't show a Big Ten game at all in that slot). We'll see when the final details come out, but I think it's a reasonable assumption that both OTA Fox and ABC will have at least 1 Big Ten game every week.

Iowa vs Wyoming is a better match up in my opinion than Akron vs Penn St. I'll bet Iowa struggles (like they always do at the beginning of the season) and the game is very competitive. OTH, although I'll be rooting for Akron, I'm betting Penn St beats them decisively.

How come ABC never shows SEC home games? It's always "SEC on ESPN" for a prime time game. Why no "SEC on ABC" on Saturday nights. Does the CBS contract prohibit ESPN from putting that game on ABC or is that ESPN's decision.
Typical ABC Saturday:
-Big 10 game during the day
-Big 12 game during the afternoon
-PAC 12/Big 10/Big 12 home game for primetime.

Surprised that those 2 programs wanted to play a game in Australia but I guess you never know the positives a matchup like that can create. Lots of great kickers and Punters who are Aussies so this could be a recruiting event for those 2 programs

It is my understanding that CBS has exclusive over-the-air rights to the SEC. ESPN can show SEC home games on its own channels, but not on ABC. Therefore, ABC's Saturday night games come from the ACC/B1G/Big 12/Pac 12.

The exception has been neutral site "classics" such as those played in Arlington or Atlanta.

CBS will have two sublicensed games this year, but one will be later on this season rather than early on. This leads me to believe that those neutral-site games with SEC teams had contract stipulations that prevented them going over to CBS.

well I know ESPN owns the games in Dallas and Houston, so that's 2 of them. ESPN didn't want to sell the game in Atlanta with Alabama and FSU(no shocker there at all). Only other one is the one with NC State and South Carolina.

ESPN has sold off some games it has owned operational rights to in the past(USC-Texas in 2014 and Louisville-Auburn(like Alabama-Florida State, a Chick Fil A Kickoff Classic) in 2015), so I guessing it comes down to who is deemed the home team(Like South Carolina-NC State) unless the visiting team objects(as in LSU-BYU). The only game that cannot be sublicensed to anyone is the Advocare Classic in Arlington.

I don't think they own the operational rights to Chick-fil-a. Think ESPN gets it due to when it is(week 1 so pre-CBS package)- but also the teams involved(Boise St and West Virginia only non ACC/SEC teams ever to be in the contest).

My gut feeling was that you see more ACC games on ABC than Big 12 and PAC, given the FOX relationship. Here are the 2016 numbers for HOME broadcasts, by conference (including ABC/ESPN2 mirror-casts, but not including neutral-site games like Alabama-USC, LSU-Wisconsin, and Tennessee-VA Tech):

B1G = 18
ACC on ABC = 16 (including ACC championship)
Big 12 on ABC = 8
AAC = 4 (including AAC championship)
PAC = 3

So, twice as many ACC games on ABC than Big 12 games.

I was also surprised to see so few PAC games on ABC: USC-Stanford, UCLA-Stanford, and Notre Dame-USC. The only other games on ABC involving were
Oregon at Nebraska (B1G game) and USC-Alabama (neutral-site).

Plenty of PAC games on FOX and in the 10pm ET spot on ESPN.
