Montana GOP candidate charged with assault on reporter
I'm going to go out on a limb and say this wasn't the best plan the day before the election:

http://money.cnn.com/2017/05/24/media/mo...index.html

Lest anyone declare this fake news, it's the *Fox News* reporters that are backing up the body slammed reporter's story.

"Fox News: Reporter didn't show physical aggression

Late Wednesday, Fox News correspondent Alicia Acuna reported that she and her crew witnessed the incident and saw Gianforte grab Jacobs "by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him."

"To be clear, at no point did any of us who witnessed this assault see Jacobs show any form of physical aggression toward Gianforte," Acuna wrote.

Jacobs was transferred to the Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital where he underwent x-rays on his elbow, according to his account of the story."

So if he wins and subsequently is pressured to resign, will they need to have another special election?

Apparently they've raked in ~$100K in donations since this happened. Which, if we apparently have a subset of the population that decides that being a reporter and asking a question means you're fair game to be assaulted...

And he ended up winning 50-44.

I think that what he did is absolutely abhorrent - assaulting a reporter for asking a question. I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that he still had enough support to win.

I haven't seen the vote breakdown but there is a chance that he got enough early voting to win before the incident. The fact that a GOP candidate is only winning by 7 percent against a nutjob Democratic candidate in Montana can't be very encouraging for the GOP (although Montana does currently have a Democratic senator so the state seems to vote a bit independently at times and can't be the reddest of states).

They also have a Democratic Governor.

I think there is a strong Libertarian streak out there.

I think the fact that so much of their voting was done early had to be a factor. But like the recent presidential election, I think you have to look at the opponent - a cowboy hat wearing reincarnation of Kinky Friedman who was a Sanders supporter. Sometimes the lesser of two bad choices is still a bad choice, and I guess at least some Montanans thought this guy was still the less bad.

Not just the physical assault, but the anger in his voice. He lost it.
He still has a court appearance before Congress reconvenes and he can be sworn in.

And it wasn't like the reporter was hounding him about false rumors about his personal life - it was about the CBO score on the AHCA.
