Apparently, after their season ended a few days ago he had a meeting w/ a few of his players and told them he wasn't re-newing their schollies next year...OOPS, you can't do that coach. Awkward...so Alabama fired him.

I thought the coach had the ability to not renew a scholarship? Aren't they just one year contracts?

Quote:Goff was fired Wednesday after he tried to reduce or take away scholarships for as many as 10 players at the end of the season, according to the Tuscaloosa News’ Ben Jones. Such an action would constitute a violation of NCAA rules.

Players were reportedly told about Goff’s firing during a team meeting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Under legislation passed in January 2015, athletic programs in the Power 5, which includes the SEC, have to renew athletic scholarships annually. Athletic scholarships from Power 5 programs can’t be revoked for athletic reasons. Goff previously coached at Louisiana Tech, which is not in the Power 5 and isn’t subject to that rule.

I think after what he did at Tech he'd be a hot commodity even after what happened at Bama

MTSU or WKU, get rid of what you have and go get Goff. He's proven that he can win in CUSA.

The part about scholarships being renewed annually but can't be revoked for athletic reasons seems like a Catch 22 & maybe open to interpretation in some cases. What conditions have to exist to not renew a scholly? What was the case for the players he told? Did he just misunderstand the rule? (Playing devil's advocate there)

I thought Vandy's coach tells a couple of players every year to "move along". I guess they "find" a reason.

Not if we do it first! I imagine we're mining the JUCO talent at Jones County and the other Mississippi JUCOS pretty hard to refill the roster.

This is Hilarious!!! He could be the baseball version of Derick Dooley!!! LMAO!! As for being a hot commodity, I think posting the worst record at Bama since 1980 will add a little tarnish to the shine.

If the NCAA has rules for P5 that separate them from the rest of us, then our Presidents have already ceded the separation.

It is all part of those five conferences wanting more autonomy. The NCAA granted them the right to pass rules that they wanted, but with the understanding that those rules were only applicable to the members of those five conferences. The other D-I conferences also vote on those proposed rules, but they do not apply division wide unless the required number of members outside those 5 conferences vote in favor.

In the case of this particular rule, the rest of D-I rejected it, so it is only applicable to those 5 elitist conferences that thought they needed it.

Academic reasons (not going to class, not maintaining a schedule to graduate), Disciple reasons.

Just can't pull a schollie because you want to give it to a better player.

I don't like the precedent, but don't mind them handicapping themselves.
