Tie game and we are up to bat in the bottom of the 9th ... Who wants to be the hero?

BAses loaded, we're down by 1 with 2 outs.

Team just didn't have a clutch bone in their body this year. That and a pathetic bullpen are the difference between last year and this year

Hitting looks very positive for next year with a bunch of this year's freshman looking real good by the end of this year. Plus Large will be back.

We need pitching, both starting and relieving. Right now, we have only Raquet and Sheehan to carry over in the rotation. Fletcher needs to acquire a closer's mindset for next year.

Hard way to go out. Between the weather affecting the schedule and Northeastern laying an egg causing us to play first today, it was going to be a very long road. Needed just a little more offense at some point in the 9th or 11th inning, but couldn't muster it.

If Fletcher is our closer next season, then we are in trouble. His stuff is just not good enough to be a closer.

Not sure what happened to White this year but we need him to look more like he did the previous season. He has good enough stuff to be the closer, but has to command his pitches a whole lot better than he has.

Agree the bats look promising for next season. Still need to come up with clutch hits though. There were too many games this season where we would be in situations with the bases loaded or 2nd and 3rd with 1 or 0 outs and not score a run

RE: CAA BASEBALL: 2017 Tournament Analysis
Sometimes the gods of baseball say no....we won several games this year in final inning at-bat. Today was one of those "no" days. Had first and second and just one out bottom of 9th...doubleplay. Had bases loaded and one out bottom of 11th...strikeout and popup.

We need one dominating pitcher, a stopper to move this team from good to very good. Team won 32 games this year playing a high-level schedule...coming on top of last season's outstanding championship crew the program is in a pretty good place.

One big unknown for next year: Large is a junior...will he turn pro if his MLB draft is an expected so-so middling round; or will he return for his senior year and look for another huge season to boost his draft status and bonus?

Pitching is a mess. We lose Brown and Powers. We also lose Miconi and Ameer. We had a good overall season this year record wise, but now we're used to a better outcome. I don't get how we went from a great pitching staff to zippy unless it was due to the former head coach and his ability to recruit them.

RE: CAA BASEBALL: 2017 Tournament Analysis
This year could have been so much different if we still had Gaouette... W&M wouldn't have needed to waste a good starter in Brown at closer and could go straight to Gaouette to finish off the game since the starters went 7+ innings in many games this season.

Badly need to find a closer next year or the same situation is going to arise - the starters will throw 7 good innings and the bullpen will implode and turn a W into a L

I'll look at it differently. You only have three weekend starters and we essentially had four and used Brown as a closer. The problem wasn't that we didn't have a closer, it was that we had ZERO bull pen. It was usually the guys who came in before Brown that blew it. Go look at the statistics on line and you will see that outside of the top four guys it was pretty ugly, and don't get fooled by ERA because inherited runners get dumped on the starters ERA. Look at walks per nine innings, batting average allowed hits per nine innings, BB/K ration. Yikes. The only overpowering pitcher on the entire pitching staff is Raquet and he has control problems. If he has better command this year he will be lights out. Me, personally would have moved him to the closer slot and used the other three on the weekend.

Except you can't have a closer who has no control. He'd be walking in the tying runs and bring in the losing run by a HBP. As a previous poster stated, no control is why we couldn't use White as closer this year.

Point taken, but he's the only one with closer stuff and had the best K/Inning than the rest of them and even with the walks he is still 2/1 K/BB which isn't horrible. I'll just go back to my sentence saying we had ZERO bull pen.

White had relatively poor control the prior season, but he also got a good amount of Ks and really didn't get hit that hard. This season, White not only walked a lot of batters, but got hit hard often.

I think Raquet would have been the best choice for closer because he has the best hit and miss stuff. Even though control was an issue at times, especially the latter part of the season (maybe he got worn out a bit), so long as you aren't giving up extra base hits you can get away with walks.

Personally, I want my best guys throwing the most innings. You have to have some kind of bullpen, but step one is getting the lead to the bullpen, and that's a lot harder than holding a lead once it's there.
