RE: Gill - does Gill go or stay
This reminds me of Tommy Bowden when he was at Clemson. They consistently finished 8-4 or 9-3 shy of their goals but good enough to keep him for a long time. They went against the grain and fired him and Dabo has taken them to a new level. I think it’s time for a similar move.

So, are we lookin’ for the coach that will move us from the 5-7 or 7-5 range to the 8-4 to 9-3 range? And then once he wears out, find the 10-2 to 12-0 guy?

No with the right coach we could get to 10-2. Our schedules aren’t overly difficult for the next 7 years or so.

Hire a P5 level coaching staff and they should win most of the G5 games and all the FCS games. Maybe an occasional P5 win and you get 10-2 type of seasons with the foreseeable schedules. LU has money to attract and retain quality coaches. It's just a matter of hiring a quality coaching staff at this point.

I mean 9-3 should be the standard if we are playing FCS, mostly G5 and a P5or two. Is that realistic right now? No, but it’s very much doable. Troy and App have been doing just that.

RE: Gill - does Gill go or stay
Gill finished 6-5 four times, 8-4 twice with one ending 9-5 after counting a 1-1 postseason, and he's currently 4-4 with a likely chance to finish 6-6 at best. In his six years as a head coach prior to LU, Gill had one winning season. He is just average and he places a ceiling on the program here. I would rather take my chances swinging for the fences with someone who could make us ranked or finish with 10 wins or something meaningful and significant and risk worsening the program with a failure.

To the Gill apologists, he’s a Christian and respectable guy, so that’s all that matters. Nonetheless he’s making almost a million dollars and giving us these results. Not like there’s other Christian coaches and staff who can build a winning program here for the same amount.

RE: Gill - does Gill go or stay
Update on my choice for Defensive Coordinator Paul Shaffner from Colgate.

They played Army today (L 28-14) and held them to their lowest yardage all year 286. You can compare that to the 510 we gave up. They also forced a turnover which is something LU didn’t do. It’s safe to say Colgate’s talent level is nowhere near as good as ours but their coaches can get production out of their players.

My opinion of HCTG may change if he does not make significant changes on the defensive side of the ball following this season. I know he is loyal to his coaches, which is admirable. But foremost he is loyal to the program and what it needs to improve. New defensive coaches are a must.

A new head coach is a must as well. TG is literally mediocre and had winning, not dominant, seasons in a mediocre conference. We will not reach prominence like we have discussed for years while waiting to become an FBS school. The other thing is that Jerry likes Gill, so he most likely will stay for the last season on his contract. This is not good business on the athletic side of things; Jerry is too involved and could ruin opportunities for the school. If he really wants to fully accomplish his father’s vision to play USC and ND (wouldn’t count BYU since we received a game courtesy to McCaw), then he would step aside and make McCaw do what he’s good at. Why did take the risk of hiring McCaw if he’s not going to use his attributes? Gill doesn’t deserve the salary that he’s receiving with his poor efforts. His fame from the past and good character is not going to make us win games or grow the morale of the athletes.

RE: Gill - does Gill go or stay
Most national media picked us to win 3 games. We’ve surpassed that.
Most LU fans picked us to win at best 5 games. We most likely will surpass that.
If we finish our fist season at 6-6 HCTG deserves to keep coaching.

Serious changes need to be made on the defensive side of the ball. Other than that I am happy with our first full FBS season. We could have won a couple more, but that’s the story of almost any football team in the nation.

It looks like he is interested and has been offered the job. Interesting that ECU moved today to fire their coach and Houston didn’t sign with UNCC like expected. Now it seems he is a top candidate at ECU.

Plot twist: Gill resigns next Monday and some of the coaching staff with him.

Keep dreaming. One day that may happen a couple years down the road. But this 6-6 season improves his chances of staying on.

I think London will be getting more offers than ECU. Man would be smart to watch how the carousel plays out. ECU is a complete rebuild.
