The A-10 would have been great but that doesn't guarantee anything.

Mason has been there four years, has been under .500 three times, and went to the CBI this year. Nothing makes me happier in sports than Mason not doing well in basketball. They had the two most annoying posters in the history of the Internet. With the exception of captain complaint that we have here of course.

I would have liked our chances to be competitive in the A-10 had we been in that conference starting a few years back. We have had some success against Richmond, VCU, GMU, and others from the A-10 during that period so I doubt that we would be performing similar to how GMU has been if we were concentrating on basketball as the main sport. In my opinion we would be a better program today than we are in C-USA, and still we are competitive against A-10 schools.

Not saying I completely disagree with you, just saying there are a lot of variables and "what ifs" in that scenario.

Wasn't Charlotte mediocre in the A10 after years of success in the good hoops version of CUSA? Nothing is guaranteed. I'll take football all day.

At least in the A10 we would have home games with teams like Dayton instead of teams like North El Antonio.

Agreed, but we wouldn't be hosting UNC, NC State, and VT in football. We also wouldn't be collecting 1.3M for guarantee games to travel to Liberty in football.

There are so many variables here, it isn't a simple equation. I'm more of a basketball fan than football but I can see the arguments on both sides.

I know a lot of people think that football hurt men's basketball but I'm not 100% sure about that.

There is no question in my mind that the start of football has had a significantly negative impact on ODU's Men's Basketball program. In my opinion, ODU would be playing in the Atlantic 10 the past few seasons if not for football.

What on earth leads you to believe the Atlantic 10 would want four teams from the state of Virginia? And as far as football hurting basketball, when is BB bringing UNC, Wake Forrest, NC State, UVA ect. to campus?

Unless we win those games against those BCS programs it does nothing for us

That was more about the coaching at Charlotte than it was the league. Now Charlotte has been back in CUSA a few years and they are still mediocre for the same reason.

What on earth leads you to believe that if the Atlantic 10 didn't want four teams from the state of Virginia that ODU would not have been among the three that they did want (if not for football)?

All of the schools you listed have already traveled to Norfolk to play ODU in men's basketball. The following schools have also done so -

Alabama
Auburn
Baylor
BYU
Depaul
East Carolina
GA Tech
Georgetown
Indiana
Kansas State
Maryland
Mississippi State
Missouri
Navy
SMU
South Carolina
Syracuse
Washington
West Virginia
Wisconsin

Whoever said having BCS programs playing in our football stadium doesn't matter unless we win, I'll just assume you are kidding.

1) Real sellouts with the stadium actually full

2) Extra news coverage

3) Recruits seeing they can stay at home and play against "big name" teams

4) Opportunity for an upset that is much harder to pull off on the road, helping with recruiting battles

5) Higher likelihood of TV coverage

etc, etc.

I sure hope Duke doesn't call and want to play basketball at the Ted any time soon, because apparently it won't matter if we don't beat them!

6) empty stadium by halftime, if the game isn't competitive.

Do you REALLY think losing to power 5 teams at home is going to help us win
recruiting battles? Do you REALLY think extra news coverage of us losing to these teams is going to do anything for us? We got plenty of mentions on ESPN when we lost 80-20 to UNC, in what way did that help us?

Unless all these fans are going to stay for the whole game, it doesn't matter if their butt is in the seat at the beginning of the game.

I assume that you are a proponent for participation medals 01-wingedeagle

RE: New Women's B-ball Coach
So we should be hearing soon who the new coach is. I'm starting to get excited about the next chapter. It needs to be a coach who is ready to get to work. I understand that they need to be quiet about the candidates, especially if they are currently employed. Wood was part of the NCAA women's selection committee, he knows the sport let's see what he can bring.

Wood Selig's father passed away earlier this week so that may delay the selection and announcement of the new coach by a few days.

Thanks for sharing. I had not heard that his father had passed. I would see him in a wheel chair at the men's basketball games sometime in the Club section. My condolences to Wood and his family.

It was actually his mother who passed. But as stated, thoughts and prayers to the Selig family in their time of grief.

Your original comment still makes no sense, nor does this one. Don't really get the participation trophy comment either but whatever.

If you don't think having power five schools play at ODU is a good thing, you aren't worth responding to anymore.
