tOSU may build 4000 seat hockey only arena, Schottenstein is too large
http://www.dispatch.com/sports/20170510/...only-arena
tOSU is planning a smaller arena, as there is just no home ice when there playing in the 17,500 seat Schottenstein even with 6000 person crowds.
This possibly opens up bidding for a World juniors championship, as only the USA and Canada attract much crowds. Columbus needs a smaller, but great, ice rink. Youth hockey would be all over it.

O to have that kind of $ lying around to build an on campus ice hockey arena for your program because the one you share with an NHL team is too bid, such problems

tOSU has its own arena, Schottenstein, where both basketball and hockey play. Nationwide Arena is where the Bluejackets play and they don't share it with tOSU.

Probably a good idea for them. When Miami plays in Columbus (well not anymore, they ended the series because they hardly ever won against us) it's a pretty partisan crowd, they don't have much of a home ice advantage even when it's just OSU fans there. They probably built Schottenstein to kill two birds with one stone, but it's probably outlived its practicality for hockey.

I think his point remains, though.

Seems small, ours is in between the 17.5k and 4k at 8k and we have a practice ring that also has open hours to youth groups.

Imagine tOSU was seeing Wisconsin's Kohl Center and their formerly almost sold out hockey games. Wisconsin almost needs to downsize too, but may have turned their program around now.

Will putting hockey into a different facility open up the Schot for other events (concerts, shows) that may be more profitable? What I'm saying is: by spending a little money might they actually make even more back?

I doubt it. Columbus already has a lot of facilities for those types of events.
In addition to Schottenstein there's Nationwide Arena (NHL, 20k), the Convention Center (16k), St. John Arena (13k), Celeste Center (10k), and Taft Coliseum (5k). That doesn't even count outdoor venues such as the stadiums for the Columbus Crew (MLS), Columbus Clippers (AAA), the Buckeyes' football stadium, or the Buckeyes' excellent baseball stadium.
Also, Columbus is only a mid-sized market and has 5 larger markets within 200 miles (Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Indianapolis) that people are willing to drive to for concerts.

In the past, they only played a few of their games (i.e. Michigan, anyone else who was really good) in the Schottenstein Center, and play the rest on the campus ice rink that the women's and intramural teams play on that only had bleachers that could seat probably less than a thousand people. The campus ice rink was used pretty much 24/7 in the fall and winter between men's and women's practices and the multitude of intramural games, so I'm wondering if the purpose of this is more relief for that than it is for not having games in the Schottenstein Center.

When i was at Michigan State in the early 80's I always loved the intimacy and feel of the ~6500 seat Munn Ice Arena on campus. Back in those CCHA days it was always packed for every hockey game.
I think it will be great for tOSU to have a smaller more intimate venue.
