While it is good news that ODU is a top EMPLOYER.....I would like to see the employees make ODU a Top tier ACADEMIC institution by increasing admissions standards, have more top ranked programs, and growing our academic offering such as adding a Med School or Dentistry school. While it is great to have happy employees they need to work to make ODU a better academic school across the board.

Everything you mentioned has been steadily increasing for a while now. This stuff takes time.

While I'd like us to be higher, we were ranked this year by USN&WR. I'm sure it is no coincidence the two happened around the same time.

agreed, hopefully we are biding our time and resources to acquire these programs that could elevate us further. The question is if EVMS is part of that equation or not.

I have asked some pretty high up folks at ODU face-to-face and while they did not give me long or detailed answers the answer is no. In short there is no money to do it and none will be available in the foreseeable future. Look at the funding for higher ed good old Virginia has been putting out there for quite a while now and it is pretty clear. Plus as I would think all ODU supporters already know there is very little love for ODU at the state legislature level. I have been told that even if someone could be found to make the mega-donation it would take to get the idea off the ground the state would still not allow it to happen because of the continuing financial support needed down the road. Med Schools are a very expensive add on. In short Virginia is no longer going to do what they did back in 1968(69?) when they allowed MCV to merge into VCU. I hope I am wrong here but my impression is the ODU higher ups see this EVMS question as, more-or-less, the same as being asked what are they doing and when are we going to join the SEC?

RE: u want good news?
Why would a merger between ODU and EVMS require a bunch of money? Seems to me that there would be significant savings from synergies.

RE: u want good news?
Recent trends are for academic medical centers to operate independent of the non-medical campus. There are exceptions like Vandy and a few others, but more and more, these are either separate or preparing to become separate. AMCs to require a lot of money and generally their employees, research, and operations are much more expensive.
All that said, there is NO reason that the state-owned EVMS shouldn't be branded ODU Medical Center. EVMS as a name really means little outside of our state and would get a boost in branding from just changing the logo. And it should still remain a separate entity. Win-Win.
My prediction is that the State of Virginia will allow it to become a distantly-branded medical center like W&M Medical Center instead. We've seem them do favors for VT, allowing them a medical school in Roanoke from 40 minutes away. They do what they want, when they want. But consistency across all state-owned institutions? Forget it.

More good stuff;
Quote:The Education Trust, an organization that promotes high academic achievement for students at all levels, recently recognized Old Dominion University as one of the nation's top 15 higher education institutions with African American student graduation rates that were significantly higher than averages for comparable higher education institutions.
