Records obtained from the city of San Diego showing actual attendance figures for San Diego State football games over the past seven seasons indicate a venue about the size of what is being proposed for Mission Valley would have been adequate for most Aztecs games.

According to the city, SDSU averaged 25,617 fans through the turnstile for its six games last season at Qualcomm Stadium, well short of the 37,289 announced attendance that is generally cited as the team’s average.

The highest actual average attendance for SDSU football over the past seven seasons was 28,274 in 2011, and the team has drawn crowds of more than 30,000 to exactly one-fourth of the 44 home games it has played in that time.

Of the 11 games in the last seven years that drew more than 30,000, three exceeded 40,000. In that span, SDSU drew fewer than 20,000 a total of 21 times.

You can't get a P5 to come visit you in a 30k stadium.

Depends on the P5 school.
i.e. Utah St and Wyoming has 25k or little less stadium and still get P5 schools to visit on campus.

Wake got Notre Dame to visit them in their tiny stadium before the ACC move. There were 29,000 ND fans packed into that little sardine can. I remember thinking they could've moved the game to Greenville. ECU wouldn't have charged Wake.....much.

RE: SDSU says it's cutting off talks with FS Investors about Qualcomm Stadium site
It's not just size, but also configuration.

I have long thought the best course of action for SDSU is a different parcel of land 2 miles due south of the campus, which is now only used as a drone and model airplane flying field, adjacent to a city facilities station. A sunken earthen stadium there, with just dirt/gravel parking lot (just run a bulldozer once a year to level it) makes the most sense (and it could still be used by the flying clubs 355 days a year). Stanford did something similar for a whole lot less than Cal's stadium upgrade. All you need to spend money on initially is a single football building for lockers and also football training at one endzone (east side). Over time as budget allows you can slowly upgrade.

What's the feasibility of building an OCS at SDSU? I see some lots on campus, particularly near the freeway.

Zero. There is no space on Campus, and suburban and urban neighborhood slam right next to the campus. Something would have to be torn down to create the space in the first place. SDSU is probably the messiest campus layout I have ever visited.

LOL, maybe they should consider what Seattle did when it created the Freeway Park and build it over Interstate 8.

Well yeah. 29k fans were there. If 29k were there and one of the schools provides 0 you are left with 29k.

SDSU just signed a home & home with Wazzu:

http://www.fbschedules.com/2017/06/washi...ules-2021/

Wazzu's stadium only seats 32K. So they're not sweating the possibility of playing in a smaller venue.

On the contrary, I see three candidates physically (mind you, I fully understand any and all of these might be well beyond would would be reasonable in terms of cost ...)
- parking lot A (very NE corner of campus)
- parking lots 2, 2A, E (east side of campus)
- the open field next to (to the immediate east of) Viejas Area, if you tear down the buildings on the north side

Technically almost 33k, but I was thinking it was at least 4xk. Surprised to see it is that small! That must be right down with Wake Forest for smallest P5 football stadium. Even Oregon State's stadium is around 45k.

I love rhetoric that makes no sense. So nobody frokm Wake showed up for Notre Dame. Also the Wake administration made 29k tickets available to Notre Dame fans but zero to their own fan base? So the purpose of scheduling ND was so ND fans could come to Wake and be prioritized over season ticket holders who have been buying tickets for decades? LOL. Sure fella...

I am betting someone has a plan on a napkin or MS paint that the general public isn't privy to. Before the Turner Field deal dropped in our laps I know a real estate guy who had doodled a plan that would have gotten us (with great negotiating and effort) an erector set stadium within 4 blocks of central campus.

Please explain to me why SDSU can't completely take over Qualcomm from the city. All maintenance, costs, fees, and revenue. That seems to be the best/easiest solution for SDSU.

I also hear they can play at Petco permanently as long as they schedule most/all of their games after the Padres season is over. Is this really feasible.

Good question. Just buy it and do what you want.

Nice try. But your first option is way too small (only a couple acres), and completely boxed in by major roads and steep inclines.

The other two options would be big enough if you demolished a few large adjacent structures (doable but expensive). But they both sit over an underground light rail line ($$$$!).

Parking lot A is not too small, unless you're telling me that the lot itself is at a steep incline.

Look at Google maps, relative to the practice football field on the west side of the campus. The field easily fits in the parking lot, and with room to build stands.

Of course, it comes down to money. Anything can be done for infinite dollars ...

SDSU could just buy Qualcomm and operate it for cheaper, probably. They want the cheapest solution that they can get.

If their relationship with the city were better they could buy Quallcomm and reconfigure it the way they want for less than a new stadium.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that's feasible. The stadium is a half century old, so even if they jazzed it up, it would need to be either razed or renovated again within a decade or two.

I would look for a deep pocket sugar daddy to buy the stadium, do some upgrades, renamed the stadium for the sugar daddy, and cut out the soccer team. Let the soccer team find a new venue. Don't destroy something to build something that is smaller. SDSU's goal is to gain access to the PAC 12. They need the Qualcomm stadium as is.

They'll gain access to the Pac-12 when I gain access to Ariana Grande's dressing room.

So in other words, never or at least as long as the current members are in it.
