Here is an idea of something they can "try". Splitting the men's and women's tournaments so that the women's tournament no longer holds the conference back. They could also "try" letting the higher seed host until the semifinals, that would generate some fans at games, and would be slightly less bush league than playing BooPlex style in a football practice facility, in a town that doesn't have a home team.

There are a number of things they can "try" that would be less embarrassing, and present a much better chance for success, they just have to give up on this whole two tournaments, one town nonsense.

Do you know what the financials are and how they compare with the different options available? What about having 2 games at one time in one large stadium makes it embarrassing? How many other people are "embarrassed?"

I'm sure this is much cheaper. CUSA headquarters is 30 miles away in Irving, TX. Not sure how many employees they have, but they don't have to travel anywhere... but it isn't like that savings will go benefit us so why would we care? Again, there are no good options anyway and there is no way to make this tournament a winner. It isn't like they can hold it on Saturday and Sunday at Richmond Coliseum and fill it with ODU, VCU, GMU, and JMU fans driving an hour and a half by the thousands. They should just ditch the tournament and give the auto bid to the regular season champ.

RE: CUSA Basketball Tournament to Dallas, well, Frisco, Texas
I am not a fan of the idea because we tried it at ETSU. (not your ETSU ODU Aggie) When we opened the Mini-Dome for football with 12,000 seats they decided they would also use it for basketball. They stuck a basketball court in the middle of where the field was (football turf rolled up and stored) and it was awful. Fans a long way from the court, our crowds were small for such a large facility which equaled no crowd noise. I know teams are probably more used to this today (40 years later) but the ridiculous expanse of the facility and the height of the roof destroyed teams shooting percentages and play in general. Our Coach Sonny Smith (before his Auburn-Barkley days) hated it so much he begged to be moved back into our old 1950s era gym. Admins said no, we have a new multi-million dollar facility and we are going to use it. Over the decades they tried putting a few bleachers down on the floor (mostly for students). They tried moving it closer to one side of the stadium stands but, of course, that moved it further away from the other side. I could go on but a few years ago (4 maybe) they finally gave up and admitted it was an idea that failed. ETSU now plays all of it's home games at Freedom Hall the Johnson City, TN version of Scope (albeit 1/2 the size). I do not argue that Dallas is a better location and might draw more fans but it will be a vast football facility which will not help the atmosphere. Finally, I know these days they play the NCAA Finals in a even bigger football facility but they also have huge crowds and teams that are used to it. I just don't see it working for CUSA but maybe it will. I just know it did not work for my old school and they tried for 40 years.

Still can't believe ETSU ever thought a dome was a good idea in Johnson City. By the way, I was just visiting family in the Tri-cities and saw the new stadium is coming along nicely. Reminds me of Charlotte's.

This is not one "large" stadium. I seats 12,000 people. And what is wrong is the optics of having some AAU style garbage going on in the conference show case. As to financials, what would make them look good is filling stadiums. This won't do that.

It seats 12k for football. You're adding a lot of space when you shrink down the field of play and sidelines for hoops?

Is 12,000 seating capacity the right number? Isn't this considered large compared to what we see?

Why do you believe AAU style is "garbage?"

There are a lot more components to financials than filing up a stadium.

I guess shrinking it some, but you are also adding a second basketball court.

Because AAU is as amateur as it gets
12,000 for both venues? Not much.

Well at the time when I was there the folks were pretty excited about the dome and it worked will at other places like Idaho & North Dakota. Alas that glow went away pretty fast at ETSU and then it was just a big waste of money. Well except for the track program and now an indoor practice facility. I agree the new stadium (ETSU) looks pretty good and with a great view of the mountains out the endzone. You are correct UNCC's stadium was one of the ones they gave a real look at before finalizing their plans. The key will be (and always has been) can they convince 10,000+ or so fans to pry their eyes off of UT long enough to come watch ETSU play. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one but I have my doubts.

Amateur in what way? You are expressing a lot of frustration without actually providing material to be frustrated about.

You do know "AAU" stands for Amateur Athletic Union, right?

I'm pretty sure MonarchBlue is pointing out that, just like at the AAU Boo Williams event, the CUSA Tournament in Frisco will be played simultaneously in the same location. That is the reference towards the tournament appearing amateurish. Not saying I agree or disagree but it really isn't that hard to comprehend.

Seriously, do you post with substance? A high portion of your replies are back handed questions in which you seem to think no one will answer.

If I was to complain about something, i would explain what my complaint is instead of vague insults and offer a reasonable and logical solution. Get all the facts and have a counter argument, then complain.

College basketball is amateur, correct? Since you wanted to open that can of worms.

#1. Show me anywhere in this statement where an insult was made. I'll wait.

I'm really not sure why I am even wasting time on a post I didn't even make but your protection over ANY criticism regarding ODU is hilarious. I mean you have over 6,000 posts on this site so it is quite obvious that every single piece of criticism gets a response from you. No doubt that some on here fall on the extreme side of negativity (we know the culprits) but don't let that mask the real concerns that are valid.

I'm sure you will probably work up some backhanded way of asking a question in response to even this.

What I am wondering is why in the hell did the Pilot feel the need to show Gil Brandt's view on this? He is a 84 year old former NFL VP of Player Personnel for the Cowboys. He has zero affiliation with college basketball today.

Shocking. Of course he is going to think it is a smart move. It's a smart move for the Cowboys because they are going to make money off of CUSA in March while the facility is not in use by the Cowboys. It is a win-win for them.

This isnt true. With the amount of whining on here, I would have way more posts. Luckily Ive blocked a few so I dont respond.

The conference is trying something and it is in an area with a ton of alumni. They had to move away from the current setup, which was a nightmare. The "criticism" seems focused on the tourney being held in the practice faciliy and the ability to hold multiple games at a time. You can post a criticism without hyperbole and with actual support.

I wish if was in Nashville. But Im not niave enough to cry bc my "option" wasnt used.

How JJ sees it.

@ODUMBB coach Jeff Jones in favor of move to Frisco. "Might as well try it. It's not like anything else has been overwhelmingly positive."

You gotta admit -- he has a point.

Wow, I'm amazed at the brutal honesty of that response. And he's right, you just expect something a little more PC from a conference member.
