CUSA Basketball Tournament to Dallas, well, Frisco, Texas
It's official. http://pilotonline.com/sports/college/ol...f9682.html

We might try to get there, if the team is looking good this year. Much more appealing and easier to get to than Birmingham.

"A host city must generally have two arenas to host early-round men's and women's games at the same time, but the Ford Center can be set up to use two courts at the same time."

This is effing embarrassing. This obsession with having the tournaments in the same city has led to one bad decision after another. CUSA leadership (there's an oxymoron) is an unmitigated disaster.

Agree the optics are as mickey mouse as you can get. This is a very bad decision.
Nothing says FCS louder than Frisco, Tx.

Actually Birmingham or El Paso after their host schools lose early in the tournament says FCS every bit as loudly. Literally less than 1000 people in the stands.

I wasn't originally a huge fan of the decision, but I'm warming up to it as an alternative to the cities already mentioned. If we are going to play in this conference that isn't central to anyone, you may as well make it a destination. I would like to see Charlotte, Nashville, or even New Orleans as a spot if Norfolk refuses to bid for all the wrong reasons.

I don't care where it is if it isn't someplace I can reasonably travel to, but the idea of playing men's and women's games in the same football practice facility SIMULTANEOUSLY is about as bush league as it gets. Just split the damn men and women and put it in Norfolk. People will attend and poof no more embarrassing tournament. The entire thing is being held back by some inexplicable rule that they presumably think benefits the barely attended women's tournament, which is the most ass backward way to manage your conference showcase I can think of. This conference is the most inept entity I have ever had the displeasure of paying close attention to.

It's not a case that Norfolk refuses to bid as much as CUSA has the dopey two arena mandate. They could get around that but extending the tournament a few days (like the CAA did for a few years before splitting the tournaments again) and run it for a full week like the MEAC does now at Scope. They could also move the tournament up a week, avoid the MEAC Tournament, and then Norfolk is in play with The Ted and Scope. Really they don't even need Scope for the women's tournament. They could probably put a court in the ballroom at The Main for two days and get enough seats in there to accommodate everyone that wanted to go. Honestly, I don't see how Norfolk would be able to host the CUSA and MEAC tournaments at the same time. The hotels downtown are slammed just for the MEAC. I know the oceanfront/Town Center/Greenbrier is nearby but really that's further than teams are going to want to stay from the competition site.

@ODU2k1
I just question how hard they are trying. Have they reached out to NSU or VWC? Either of those arenas could host the women's tournament. Maybe they have tried, I just wonder why no one has asked the question.

The bid for both is probably a bit problematic financially. They could probably gain access to another arena, but would they see a return due to having to outbid other cities? Given recent tournament attendance, I would wager that they would not. Split the tournaments and those odds increase as the bids decrease.

I understand the moaning about two games in the same court, but I do not understand the hate towards Frisco. This is an upgrade compared to having it in UAB's backyard 3 years in a row, and a massive upgrade compared to El Paso. At least if you go you have something else to do besides watching basketball.

RE: CUSA Basketball Tournament to Dallas, well, Frisco, Texas
The other thing we are missing with a "Norfolk" bid is they are going to want to use Scope for the bulk of things. There is a decidedly diminished financial gain for the City of Norfolk as an entity to host the CUSA Tournament and have it played at ODU, NSU, or VWC (where the Batten Center is probably over the line in Virginia Beach anyway). As it stands now from a scheduling perspective Norfolk is out of the picture since the MEAC has the week of the CUSA Tournament locked down for quite a while.

I not only don't think this is bad like most of y'all, but i actually really like the arrangement. This is a football stadium that we are playing in. It is not some rinky dink high school gym like the Stu.

The days of being in Richmond are long gone. A direct flight will take you to Dallas and there is a ton to do there. Way to think outside the box CUSA

You like the idea of playing AAU style with multiple games going on simultaneously... in a football practice facility?

Yea...kind of.

I have a feeling it is going to be slightly more professional than the Boo joint. Syracuse plays in a dome, albeit much larger, and they partition off a portion of the gym. The NCAA played finals for years in domes and sectioned off portions of the court. It never looked unprofessional. I have a feeling that this will be two totally independent venues that happen to be housed under one roof.

And I believe/assume the games are being played at the Ford Center which is a 13,000 seat indoor football stadium which is separate from the actual practice facility.

I am quite the pessimist and I actually am thinking good things about this. I would take this over Birmingham any day of the week.

This is pretty innovative and the conference really has to try something. Time to wait and see how it plays out. Don't see how it can be worse than Birmingham, Alabama though.

Here is an idea of something they can "try". Splitting the men's and women's tournaments so that the women's tournament no longer holds the conference back. They could also "try" letting the higher seed host until the semifinals, that would generate some fans at games, and would be slightly less bush league than playing BooPlex style in a football practice facility, in a town that doesn't have a home team.

There are a number of things they can "try" that would be less embarrassing, and present a much better chance for success, they just have to give up on this whole two tournaments, one town nonsense.

I don't know, playing two games at the same location at the same time might be one of the only things worse than Birmingham, Alabama. But I'm actually not going to complain. I have already come to acceptance that I am not going to like whatever CUSA decides. Norfolk doesn't have the money to bid on a loser. Frisco, Texas does.
