The school will possibly shut down this year David. Their athletics are toast, just a matter of what day it's announced.

They can't shut down. They are actually an unofficial HBCU school which the majority of students are African American. There will be hell raise by African American leaders if the school was forced to shut down. It would be like trying to shut down or merged the HBCU schools down in the southern states.
Please explain what an unofficial HBCU is.

Chicago State serves mostly impoverished African Americans like the HBCU's down south and east. It can be classified similar to them.

However it was not created to be separate and equal and doesn't have that tag and those traditions. So that's one less barrier needed to shut it down even if there would be a stiff fight to prevent its closure.

That's funny. Learn something new every day. I was unaware that Morehouse and Spellman serve impoverished African-Americans.

It serves all comers but look at what part of Atlanta they're in. The people with the least resources and education growing up often end up at HBCU's.

I believe I do. I drove by both of them when I went to Atlanta. Maybe I didn't spend enough time in the area but I know I wasn't in Sandy Springs or Buckhead, that's for sure. The neighborhood looked pretty run down.

So is USC's or Houston for that matter. Has nothing to do with who they graduate.

You drove by. LOL

This isn't an argument over neighborhoods but has everything to do with the type of students HBCU's attract.

And turn off your racism radar if it's on, I'm a black guy that spent 4 years at an HBCU.

Not all HBCUs are created equal. And yes Morehouse attracts a certain type of student.

Rankings

As of 2016, Morehouse is the No. 1 men's college for producing Rhodes Scholars.

Morehouse ties with Howard for producing the most Rhodes Scholars from a HBCU and ties with Harvard for producing the most black male Rhodes Scholars.[23][24]As of 2016,

Morehouse is the #1 baccalaureate-origin institution of black male doctorate recipients.[24][25]

In 2016, TrendTopper MediaBuzz College Guide ranked Morehouse as the No. 1 HBCU with the best brand.[26]

In 2016, The Alumni Factor ranked Morehouse among the best 50 colleges in the nation. Morehouse was the only Georgia institution to make their top 50 list.[27]

Morehouse is consistently recognized as a Tier 1 national liberal arts college by U.S. News & World Report.[28]

Forbes magazine annually places Morehouse on its "America's Top Colleges" list.[29]

In 2015, Forbes ranked Morehouse No. 5 for "Most Entrepreneurial College"[30]

Morehouse was ranked #4 among the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the U.S. News & World Report 2017 rankings.[31

]Morehouse is also one of only four historically black colleges ranked in the top tier among the nation's Best Liberal Arts Colleges according to the U.S. News and World Reports 2011 rankings.

In 2011, Morehouse received a rarely awarded grade of "A" for its overall core curriculum and was counted among the "hidden gems" in the What Will They Learn? project conducted by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni.[32]

In 2010, according to the Huffington Post, Morehouse ranks among America's Most Grueling Colleges due to the college's rigorous pre-medical curriculum and overall standard for excellence.[33]

Morehouse is among the top producers of Fulbright Scholars in Georgia.

According to a 2007 joint publication by Newsweek and Kaplan, Inc., Morehouse College was one of the "25 Hottest Schools in America" and the "Hottest Men's College".[34]

Newsweek ranks Morehouse among the nation's Best Colleges for the Service Minded.

In addition to the above rankings, in 2009 and 2010, the U.S. News reported that America's high school College Counselors ranked Morehouse College # 68 among the Best Liberal Arts Colleges in the Nation for their students.[35]

In 2008, Morehouse College was listed among 10 Great Schools for Networking by Forbes.[22]

A 2008 National Science Foundation study found that of over 3,000 colleges and universities in the U.S., Morehouse College was the fifth biggest producer of African Americans who eventually earned PhDs in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).[36]

In a 2003 study, Morehouse was ranked No. 29 by The Wall Street Journal as being one of the "Top 50 Feeder Schools" for elite graduate and professional schools .[37][38]

Morehouse was ranked No. 1 three times in a row (2002–2004) as the best school for African Americans for undergraduate study by Black Enterprise magazine.[39]

That you can paint all HBCUs with a broad stroke? Or that Chicago State is a defacto HBCU? LOL

In all honesty they should shut it down. It's mission is now overlapped by other schools and to be honest if you can only enroll a couple thousand students out of a city of 8M it's time to give up. It's unfortunate because they have a long history of over 150 years as a Teachers College.

Yes, it very much is a de facto HBCU and is even grouped with them on some websites. My HBCU was much better than, say, Alcorn State but my point remains the same.

How can you be a. HBCU if you are Not Historically Black. They maybe became majority black in the 80s. They served immigrant communities throughout the majority of their history. Are they majority Black today? Sure . But they are no more a HBCU than any other public urban school with a large black population. I guess by that definition GSU Is an HBCU with 20k African-American students.

RE: Chicago State To Add Football?!
I said this in the other Chicago State thread, but CSU really should be a community college at the most. The idea behind having a four-year university around to provide affordable education for poor south siders is noble in intent, but when there's a glut of other struggling public schools nearby (Governors State, NEIU) and across the state (WIU, EIU, SIU) combined with a budget crunch, it's extremely difficult to maintain in a sustainable manner. A two-year school would serve its purpose well in that area, an associates degree for many nearby students would be enough to open up a number of opportunities that'd be unavailable to them otherwise. Although a closure is probably the most logical option financially imo.

RE: Chicago State To Add Football?!
It's an HBCU in a sense based mostly on their current student body makeup and specially the type that they serve. These aren't middle class students from the suburbs but lower class with less education than most. Why is that so hard to grasp? There as some schools that weren't created to be a state flagship that may as well be one now days despite not having been created by the government to be one.

The city and state have really done a disservice by not addressing the issue before. Tbey have had problems their entire history.

RE: Chicago State To Add Football?!
Several midwestern states should look at consolidating campuses. Closing a campus reduces a great deal of overhead. Shipping students to a nearby school instead where they have room makes sense. At most that school would absorb a few professors, but no additional overhead (already have administration, department heads, facilities people, dorms, etc).

The political will to close a campus or two is what is lacking.

As for this football team. It wont happen. Chicago State is not like the schools in the Pioneer, such as Valparaiso, Butler, Drake, San Diego, Jacksonville, et al, who are private schools where well funded students from mostly upper end families can pay the tuition. Chicago State attracts much more lower end of the socioeconomic scale kids who are not looking to pay tuition. You are not going to get a bunch of northside kids who are going to go into South Chicago to play football. It's not happening. Ditto for band, and the rest. The person interviewed has no power, and the President who appointed him lost his Presidency. The idea is dead. Chicago State will drop down and that will end the entire concept of Pioneer football (you have to be in D-I)

The HBCU I went to more or less fit that mold, so sorry.

Eiu has double the enrollment (aT LEAST) and has had some athletic success. Panthers made it to the FCS quarterfinal football playoffs 3 years ago with Jimmy Garrapolo leading the offense. What success does Chicago State have to speak of
