Just a friendly reminder, the topic was if there any other private FCS programs with money if they wanted to look at FBS. Premise was if Liberty pulls it off successfully (5 years down the road), you know others will want to try.

He did. They're technically on the clock now. Although, VU's former anti-cfb AD is now a Big East higher up, and VU hired a USC football-minded AD as a backfill.

I'll try to spin it back onto course with some of these guys possibly looking into the situation:

Monmouth
Richmond (unlikely; said to be studying options if CAAF blows up, but perhaps interested in what/how ODU and JMU can do; probably more likely bound to the Patriot)

RE: Temple and Franklin Field

We're in a different era though. Games could be played more nights of the week than Saturday on a weekly basis.

The Pioneer, Ivy and Patriot Leagues are unlikely to produce any interest in FBS -- these all have money. Villanova stands out, but they have never been enticed.

Villanova doesn't have a stadium of FBS caliber to play in. They better stay good in basketball because that's all they have.

But they increase the capacity and go FBS. The time the Big East was talking with them is they wanted them to do a large stadium. Now they they could do something smaller in the 20k range and be fine for FBS.

They can't expand current stadium - the locals won't allow it. They complain about the traffic now. That is why Villanova was looking at off-campus options.

There's a private D-I university that doesn't have FCS football yet, but could afford FBS just as well as Liberty, for the same reasons: Grand Canyon Education, Inc.

I was going to bring them up because the way they can afford it is the same way Liberty can. Online students.

Liberty and GCU are using the money taken in from online education to fund their athletic programs. The only real difference is Liberty is "non-profit" while GCU are a for profit.

Thought Monmouth was a possibility, with their new stadium and all, but their endowment is less than $80 mill. Unless they have deep pocketed donors with intentions, FBS seems quite remote. Leon Hess gave some building before he died, so maybe he left a trust or something.

But would they really want to play games in University of Phoenix Stadium?

May not have to be private schools.

The only schools that I thought could pull it off would have been Montana, Villanova and Delaware.

It's a big leap in terms of fan support.

Ha, probably not.

Grand Canyon does have a new soccer stadium on its campus, and if they really wanted to play D-I football, there's enough room to add as many seats as they could ever need. http://gculopes.com/news/2016/8/15/general-10-in-2.aspx

It will not be Univ of Phoenix Stadium next year - naming rights are back up for sale.

Maybe GCU, Inc will sponsor the stadium.

Monmouth isn't moving up to FBS. Like Villanova, it lacks room, money and support to do so. Monmouth's aspirations are to one day be in the CAA (or whatever is left of it). That gives them bus rids to Villanova, UDel, Townson, JMU, Richmond, Albany, Stoneybrook and URI for football and Hofstra & Drexel in other sports. Plus then they get a chance for a close pay game verses an AAC school.
Um, Richmond is not moving up. Several years ago it abandoned City Stadium in favor of building a smaller on campus facility that was NOT built to be expanded. It is far more likely that VCU becomes the next large, urban, southern, public to fast track FBS football, than UR attempts to move up.

RE: Curious, are there any other private FCS programs with money?
The thing about private schools having the money is that just about all of them lack the culture required to host an FBS program. Administrators/faculty tend to be very anti-sports at several of these institutions.

It's political willpower, not money, that holds back most semi-rich to rich private schools. I'm sure that most of them could play in FBS if they really wanted to - but they don't.

Another thing to realize is that most of the campuses are not in ideal locations (if you're talking about urban privates). It costs a fortune to acquire land rights alone - and that expense doesn't add up if you lack rivals and/or a landing spot to go to.

One I'm surprised didn't go FBS was Butler. Then again, they have a way better setup now than they could hope to garner as a member of the AAC or C-USA. But if the old Big East still existed, it would have made sense to try and upgrade.

It depends if they could do scheduling to be FBS. I don't think many privates could work with the many privates right now if you are FBS unless you are Villanova. Only public schools in FCS might be able to pull this off like North Dakota State or somebody like them.

Butler is an NFL kill zone. Even Notre Dame probably commands more attention in Indianapolis than IU (the one in Bloomington) or Purdue.

Butler is hardly alone in that regard. Almost every current NFL market has a major conference team in the Metro or nearby.

Butler and Villanova FB - assuming both schools wanted to run it - would fit nicely into the AAC footprint... ...but we all know that's DOA (unless they join all sports and there is no point in losing ~$2M a year to do so).

When a school is in an NFL market, and the CFB fans in the market are already spoken for by one or more P5 teams, then now is not the time to launch a start-up FBS program, unless it's a vanity project that will be permanently funded by super-wealthy donors.

So, IMO, the Pioneer League is the right place for Butler football.

The time to start one up was after their national title run. Short of getting in the Big Ten though, they have the best setup possible.
