Will Chicago St keep sports at D1?
As I was looking at some college conference baseball standings I saw that Chicago St is 11-36. I then looked at their basketball and other athletics records this year:

Women's Basketball: 0-29
Men's Basketball 6-26
Soccer 1-16
Volleyball: 3-26

It just has me wondering if they continue on? Do they gets fans to their games? Will they be in the WAC next year?

Next year is probably the last lap for Chicago State. Their contract with the WAC will not be renewed.

Is that something that's been planned? Will the WAC kick them out? Can they?

Conference memberships are not normally on a contract basis, but in this case Chicago St only has next year left and then needs a renewal. With GCU getting fully DI this summer, the WAC will have enough full DI members to not renew them assuming that no one else leaves.

RE: Will Chicago St keep sports at D1?
I suspect not. A new Administration is taking over, and every unnecessary expense is getting axed (e.g., the 2nd campus). The reformers will soon have all the leverage and overwhelming board support they need when Rauner appoints replacements for Vallas (now the Chief Administrator) and Zollar, who resigned after failing to block Lindsey and Vallas, and along with Hatch, one of the two most intransigent unrepentant Wayne Watson supporters on the board.

After 2017-18, Chicago State will no longer have a D-I conference, as their contract will have run out. They failed to meet most of terms required by the WAC for membership, including staffing level minimums and major safety issues for D-I facilities. With Cal Baptist starting the WAC will no longer have need of Chicago State either.

Back to the basics, Chicago State never came close to the budget levels the WAC demanded, and are below 50% of that. Basically they are funded at below average D-II level. This funding comes almost 100% from tuition, meaning it is all institutional money. Donations and gate are close to zero. Given that they wont have a conference, and it is extremely unlikely the funding flood gates will open -and even if they did they would not be for athletics- rather the school is going to have to grind it's way out of it's present condition (at least the right leadership to do that is taking shape).

I wont go so far as to say they will drop down, but the math strongly points to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) as the best match. Similar sized schools -including Governors State-, with similar budgets, all within a couple hours of Chicago. It's NAIA except Basketball which is D-II. The same budget would go much farther, as travel costs would be almost eliminated.

We shall see what they do. The WAC is looking at California (other schools than UCSD), and that door appears closed. I just don't any options for Chicago State in D-I.

They don't get fans to come as many of their students are older commuter age and they haven't won in forever. Why would any Chicago resident go? They have a rather new arena though courtesy of the Illinois legislature.

Chicago State is in the fourth year of a five-year contract with the WAC. The WAC needed teams, and Chicago State needed a conference. This is not a permanent membership like most schools obtain.

However, things have become worse for Chicago State. I'd be shocked if they were in the WAC after the 2017-2018 school year.

The state budget crisis and sharp enrollment decrease at Chicago State has been documented. The school is barely staying alive.

I came across another message board thread discussing the Chicago State situation:

http://www.scout.com/sports/college/cfn/...ath-spiral

They are doing well to offer classes at this point. They have no business trying to run a Division I athletic program.

UMKC almost certainly leaves the WAC after next year. Their AD has been quoted about the need for geographic rivals and lower expenses. WAC needs Chi St.

Chicago St's arena is very unique. I don't think there's a D1 venue like it. Great sightlines to watch a game. Only a few hundred show up. Very accessible. South siders missing a hidden gem.

UMKC is like Omaha. They can shop themselves around all they want. There are no takers ... well maybe the Southland.

The WAC expects to eventually lose UMKC, that is why they are working on a couple SoCal schools to move up.

They've been nothing except technically a D-I sports program for decades now. They honestly should have applied for membership in the SWAC or MEAC. As a matter of fact, that may be their last hope of staying D-I.

Should have been built for UIC though from what I can tell they also have a nice arena.

I thought they were just doing the WAC a favor, couldn't they go back to the Summit? I'd think they, if nothing else, could go to the Atlantic Sun.

I think in the long run the WAC will be better off without Chicago State and UMKC. Having a smaller geographic footprint will make it easier to attract one or two more D-II move-ups to follow in the footsteps of Grand Canyon and Cal Baptist, or possibly add current D-I schools like Sac State or Portland State if they should eventually choose to drop football.

There are several Lone Star schools that are hungry to move up. Some of them could built up to be FBS teams because of their stadium size.
Midwestern State in Wichita Falls 14,500
Texas A&M-Commerce 13,900
Texas A&M-Kingsville 15,000
UTPB 19-302
West Texas A&M 20,000 building a new on campus stadium that could be expanded to 22,500

Tarleton State was looking to go D1, but they have a stadium size of 7000.
Angelo State have the smallest of the Texas schools at 5600.
The smallest Lone Star conference stadium is Western New Mexico at 3000.
They were gaining two new members for football.
Oklahoma Panhandle State backing out to join NAIA.
New Mexico Highlands is joining their comrades of the other 2 New Mexico schools.

Then again with UMKC, they weren't very far behind Chicago State as far as lack of contribution goes. I don't think they got kicked out of the Summit like CSU effectively did but I think they were lopped off onto the WAC both to help keep it alive and to try and see if they could be more competitive there. As far as I can recall in the 20+ years I've been following college basketball, they've never come close to the NCAA Tournament. They weren't as bad as Chicago State but also weren't very good and didn't contribute much to the Mid-Con/Summit.

Should've never been built in the first place honestly. Saving $38MM by not building anything wouldn't come close to solving Illinois' budget crisis, but the last thing they needed to spend money on was a new arena. Then again they broke ground in 2002 according to Wikipedia, things weren't nearly as dire for them back then.

In reality, CSU should be a community college at the most. The idea behind having a four-year university around to provide affordable education for poor south siders is noble in intent, but it's very difficult to execute in a sustainable manner. When there's a glut of other struggling public schools nearby (Governors State, NEIU) and across the state (WIU, EIU, SIU) combined with a budget crunch, someone's gonna be on the chopping block, and CSU is the 'easy' choice given their recent troubles. A two-year school would serve its purpose well in that area, an associates degree for many nearby students would be enough to open up a number of opportunities that'd be unavailable to them otherwise. A closure is probably the most logical option financially, but that'd be politically difficult to accomplish given the limited number of other options around.

Thanks for that. It's amazing they still offer sports at all with their entire existence in stake

Sorry David, the WAC isn't going to be FBS, so none of those schools will not move up by dropping football.

Source? Highlands is not joining the Lone Star for the main reason being that it would increase travel costs.
