Looks more like the DeKalb Chronicle's view of the Huskies.

Yep, and while I'm not that optimistic regarding the receiving corps, we always seem to find some new WRs that are playmakers so I'm not as pessimistic as the writer of the article.

So in summary, NIU's very own beat writer tells Nebraska we suck, poised for our worst season in 10 years and our program seems to be a complete dumpster fire. Couldn't have been a more negative article. Wish this Seversen guy would go back to Oregon and we could get someone like John Sahly or Steve Nitz like we had for many years before. Those guys were great and at least tried to spin NIU in a positive light. Obviously, we have issues at QB and some unanswered questions, and I don't think any of the fans are predicting a 10 win season by any means, but this article was just flat depressing. He sucks

Why do we hire guys that don't know Huskies culture? It's not hard to win 6 games in the MAC when you have quality players and a steady Quarterback. NIU will be better next season

IMO, there are way too many question marks to say NIU will be better. And we lost some quality players from a 5 - 7 team. At this point, there is nothing to suggest to me that NIU will be better....except hope.

We lost 4 games by 7 pts or less even with a ridiculous amount of injuries and awful QB play. We lost a couple good players yes, but WMU, CMU and UT lost some damn good players as well. I'm confident that if we stay healthy and these QBs get an entire off season to prep and get more reps that we can finish over 500 this season. I agree with BDB5yp, the MAC doesn't scare me

The big question is IF we stay healthy. Based on our track record, I'd say the chances of that are not great.

For NIU to go far in the MAC, a superb QB is needed. I see no evidence of that yet. Handing the ball off the vast majority of plays - added to the ubiquitous bubble screens and jet sweeps - won't do it. We need a QB who can pass. Plus, we need a play book that uses the middle of the field sometimes. Still way too many questions for me.

I agree the best QB gets th furthest in the MAC, and hence it will finally be Toledos year. But after that it's an equal race. NIU will be better. Graham will be better just by experience. With Ryan, the offense will be stuck in a horizontal pass attack, but will be better with a home run Rb like Huff. That's the point of that style offense. The OC should now know how to use Graham to the best of his limited abilities. That's worst case with Graham beating out Childers and Santa. If one of these two emerge we will be that much better at QB. Losing Kenny hurts, but we now have a true deep threat in Wesley.
Def will play faster with a full year under new DC and young players gaining experience. Injuries haapppen, but to your best player on D and QB is bad luck. Expect this year to be turning point season back to top Mac in next couple seasons. 7-5 or 8-4.

A five win team with an awful head coach, no quarterback, and no wide receivers. That is NIU.

The article is depressing, but it is very fair and not overstated. Criticism of the NIU beat writer is unwarranted.

A 5 win team that lost 4 games by 7 or less with a million injuries and QBs playing that half the season that barely got any practice reps the whole year...

Couldn't disagree more. This beat writer is a stooge. You can be fair and realistic without interviewing with opposing teams media and trashing the program you cover. Especially with NIU being a mid-major, you need positive press more than anyone. Like someone mentioned before, this guy is an outsider who took this job until something better opens up. Seversen would be better served tweeting updates from DeKalb and Sycamore HS cross country meets. That suits him much better. Let the poster who runs Huskies Unleased cover NIU. Somebody actually interested in NIU sports that may just put out something that NIU fans actually want to read

+1. I can't begrudge any NIU pessimism because of the QB situation. But to not see any of the new personnel as positives is just taking the easy way out. It's easy to say the wr spot is down because Kenny is gone. But you have Wesley, who caught 30 balls as a true soph in the Big12 and is the fastest player we've had in ten years. Beebe Is back. Blake is improving. The TE will be involved. Those are all experienced players and more of a sum of the parts as opposed to one stud. And to not have any optimism about this defense is nuts. It's the strength of the team. This team won't win the MAC, but 6 wins is a lock.

I just don't get the pessimism at all. Again, last year we won 5 games while breaking in new offensive and defensive coordinators, lost 3 QBs to season ending injuries and won 2 games w a freshman QB who got virtually zero practice reps all year. Outside of that, let's take a look at injuries. Lurry played hurt all season and it showed. Smalls missed the entire year and we had a true freshman in Isom that played a ton on the other side. 3 OLBs in Jones, Johnson and Cheren went down for the year. Beebe missed the entire year. Mario Jones was hurt. We broke in 2 brand new DEs in Sanders and Cochran and then played Sutton Smith as a 200 lb rush end. The interior offensive line was basically all brand new. Point is, for all the changes with coaches, new players, and injuries, to win 5 games and be 7 pts or less in 4 games from having 9 wins really isn't as bad of a season as everyone around here as made it out to be. Honestly, you could argue it was pretty impressive considering the circumstances. Yes, we have question marks at QB and WR, however with an entire offseason of these guys getting reps and actually get the chance to practice the offensive I definitely feel like we will be in a much better place this year. I agree that our defense will be our strength. If they do their job and don't put pressure on our offensive to light up the scoreboard, we are going to win a lot of games. I see 7 wins as the floor right now.

Admittedly I'm overly optimistic, but I think people are not taking into account the complete dumpster fire last season was. For multiple reasons.

Thank you! The QB situation may not be a strength, but it is not horrible. The article could have read....Graham has one more year of experience/maturation. Logic would dictate that he is not going to get worse, and he may be poised for a solid season. Childers is now another alternative in the mix whose size and running ability are well suited for this offense. Santa has 6 quarters of college experience; threw poorly in the EMU game, but ran very well, and guided an impressive comeback. Against KSU (his 1st start) he threw for 260 yards and had a perfectly thrown 50+ yard pass dropped by a 3rd round draft pick. He should have had 300 yards in that game to go along with his 2nd W.

Unless Childers turns into something, the qb situation is the worst it's been since I've been a fan.

I would argue that we're in better shape at QB than we were at this point in 2014. Graham and Santa have played in and won games and Childers has apparently shown promise. None of those guys in '14 had played meaningful snaps in a game and as a group they looked cover your eyes bad from spring all the way through fall camp.

RE: Huskers view of Huskies
Whenever there's no quality returning starter, you're QB situation is dire. '14 was was also in doubt, but there was more reason to have optimism. Maybe because the team was better. Also, macintosh seemed solid. Maddie was a pretty high recruit who had a year or two of college. Hare was totally unknown. 17 is just surrounded by negativity. Maybe it's all 3 guys are guilty by Graham association. I.E. if no one can clearly beat out Graham, no one is any good. I tend to think Graham happens to be one of those really good practice players. Even with all his flaws, he's the best short, quick passer we've had for the last 3 years. It doesn't concern me Santa or Childers haven't beaten him out in practice, come game time, one of those two will seize the job.
