New AD's Huge Decisions
While I have no idea what her first official act was since starting last week, she has already named the head coach of the Gymnastics team. Interim coach and former Tribe Gymnast Mike Powell was made the official coach. ECAC Champions and Coach of the year AND in his first year made it a no-brainer.

Guesses on any other early moves by her?

Petty, I know, but I'm tired of reading her retweets and posts about Texas A&M. I'm an all in type of guy this tilts me more than it should. Focus on W&M and the numerous issues facing your athletics department, SH.

Here's hoping that these words apply to the men's hoops venue and program:

That's Ryan Riddle's former job title. Not sure if Ryan moved up or out.

Looks like Mr. Riddle moved to a position in fundraising at WVU, his alma mater.

New AD's Huge Decisions
I hesitated to go here, but WTF.

Seeing speculation and discussion about LaSalle struggling with their sports identity and costs, if LaSalle were to drop out of the A10, unless another A10 member, also, moves, would have to assume the A10 would quickly move to backfill. UNCW would be a candidate, but I don't think their recent success is consistent enough. Other than providing Davidson with a geographically close conference mate and expanding the NC footprint, there would not be much gain.

If/when the basketball program breaks through to the tournament and gets the accompanying attention, combining that with the current winning consistency of the program, proximity to 757 media, potential for re-establishing natural rivals, I would think we would have to be promoting the Tribe for a potential move. Returning to a consistent home and home basketball schedule of UR, VCU, GMU, along with Davidson and GW, just outweighs any reasons to remain in the CAA for other sports, outside of football.

Have to assume Huge has that option clearly on the radar for posturing, if that opening/path were to come about sooner than later.

I would prefer Ms Huge use her influence to strengthen the CAA, not junk around with a basketball conference.

I don't think its very likely but I'd love to see us in the A-10. We can even leave football in the CAA. There's almost no downside.

UNCW, Hofstra, CoC, and maybe even Drexel seem to be more likely candidates for a move to the A10. We have no national success in basketball and our budget isn't very appealing. I'd say CoC then UNCW are the frontrunners for a move to the A10.

RE: New AD's Huge Decisions
Would love the move but we don’t fund basketball at a competitive CAA level, much less anything approaching A10 standards.

Gotta crawl before we can walk.

RE: New AD's Huge Decisions
I expect the funding to increase as soon as the next budget cycle. Huge appears to be paying attention to buttons she can push increase revenue. Basketball is one of those buttons. We'll never make any money off of soccer (sorry soccer fans), tennis, track, swimming, or anything other than football and basketball.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I'd rather cut sports and spend more on hoops

I think that CoC is the frontrunner as they consistently have had the best MBB. UNCW had a good run with the coach they lost but too many dark years before that. Drexel and Hofstra offer better market presence but think we are more attractive with our many natural rivals that offer travel cost savings and fan base appeal that raises attendance and $$$.

This could be HUGE for MBB and a real possibility if we won the tourney IMO.

New AD's Huge Decisions
Am I the only one who thinks academic and historic prestige should matter to conferences? W&M may not be (isn't) a great basketball school but we have a national profile as an academic institution.

Also our other programs are very strong and would bolster the conference in many areas.

I’m not going to speculate on an A10 opening, but in general, I think your points are valid. Plus, I think that open spots tend go to the swift and the bold, rather than to some perfect fit. If Ms. Huge has designs on some other conference, I would hope that she is making plans to make a move when the time is right. From what I know of her, if she has such designs, she probably is scheming right now. And that’s a good thing.

New AD's Huge Decisions
We certainly have no room to talk, but judging by most recent success I’m not sure if C of C would be the natural front runner to move up to the A-10. The first 3 years were mediocre at best in the CAA and while they had better success in the So Con, they haven’t made the NCAA tournament since the late 90s.

I’ll concede that they have a better overall basketball reputation than us currently. I’ll also agree that we probably wouldn’t be a likely target for a move to the A10 until we do kick the NCAA door open.

If you want to be specific about this, I would suggest we compare ourselves against academically top notch public universities with D1 sports. They aren't in the Ivy League, Patriot, etc. Most are in big time conferences.

RE: New AD's Huge Decisions
I think again we are wandering far away from realistic topics. The microeconomic analysis says we need to win A(1) championship in the CAA before we even remotely consider moving to any league where our chances are significantly less of success.

There are lots of things that could change in the next few years and most of it is driven by football. My biggest fear is that the P5(roughly 64-80 schools) will eventually totally shut out everyone else for basketball as well as football. The trend is already in that direction with non-P5 schools getting virtually no look as an at large and then being generally forced to eliminate each other in the first round. But, at least, there are automatic bids in the tourney to still give the non-P5 schools a shot. For football, it certainly looks like soon there will be only crumbs for the G5 and they will be basically at a G5-FCS combo level. I can live with that as long as it doesn't affect basketball or baseball.

On the actual thread topic, Ms. Huge has done a very good job so far, I think.
