Trump"s LU commencement speech
I'm not gonna count my chickens yet. But, thanks for the kind words and well wishes. LU still has a steep uphill road to tread. Liberty will recruit student athletes that align themselves with the values and expectations of the university. The pool of players will be much much smaller, but that is a result of out own selectivity..... thankfully.

Don't count on it. Now that Falwell has green lighted paying obscene amounts of money for football games and he hired the disgraceful Mc Caw as AD, he'll expect big time results. This pressure will eventually result in recruiting less than pristine character players.

Just like how Old Dominion is feeling more pressure to win now that they are FBS and so they are recruiting less than pristine character players? Or does this silly logic only go against Liberty?

Of course it applies to ODU as well. A little research will show you Wider has had to dismiss any number of low character players. It comes with a higher number of scholarships and a coach trying to keep fans, Ad's and Presidents happy, not to mention his own job.

Time will tell if you can be truly competitive at the FBS level with choir boys. It looks on the surface you have not really dominated the Big South, so why do you think things will be different now?

Don't let reality upset you

RE: Trump"s LU commencement speech
There is no question it is a challenge. But playing at the FBS level instead of the Big South helps widen our pool of prospects. It is a tough sell to get Texas and California Christian kids to come to play in the Big South if they have other quality options. This is another step toward opening up more of a national talent pool. But the challenge is what intrigues some of us the most.

OD, sounds like you are looking forward to the LU game. Choir boys. Can't wait until one of those goody two shoes rings the bell of an ODU player and stomps some ODU backside. Let's see where the two programs are in 5 years. You got the FBS head start. Can you maintain it?

Not. A higher source does not micro manage our lives to that point. Free will and skill determines wins and loses, not a divine intervention.

Thank you Times for restoring my faith in some LU grads. Immature, low level religion believes in a sugar daddy God.

Being a LU fan, who many times goes up stream with positions rather than with the LU fan flow, does provide me multiple opportunities for dialogue and discussion with those LU followers who tend to less blend free will with divine direction. Hey it's what makes a board lively and helps shed the conception that all LU fans are purely followers drinking the cool-aid blindly. This is hard to fathom for many that a fan can follow a team without endorsing all it's policies and practices. I just don't think my position is all that unique as others may want it to be. Because it's LU it just amps things up. Oh, and I am not a grad, am not connected with LU or TRBC in any way, have never attended the church or participated in any events other than attending sporting events. Just a fan who enjoys college athletics.

RE: Trump"s LU commencement speech
Scripture tells us every good and perfect gift comes from above. When great things happen, we give credit to the Creator. That does not imply that God is playing favorites. We just acknowledge his grace when we receive it more than some others. In our finite human minds, we cannot comprehend what God's Will is for our football team. God has bigger plans than ours.

All people are receiving God's grace at all times. Do you give thanks for God's gift when things don't go your way? The dropped pass is as much a gift as the completed.

We should. Otherwise we are questioning God's wisdom & authority. Never a good idea.

Upset? Who's upset? Liberty is finally moving up to FBS, they just released their schedule which looks impressive despite the short time that it took to make it, and our stadium is going to be expanded anywhere between 25,000 and 35,000 within a short time frame.

Liberty has taken and will take character risks before. Liberty's general students are such character risks as well. LU believes in second chances and gives people the benefit of the doubt whether right or wrong. Sometimes it works out, other times it doesn't. I don't expect that to change for our students or student-athletes.

RE: Trump"s LU commencement speech
There have been any number of kids that have been at other programs, did something stupid or screwed up, being young and immature, transferred to LU and been productive students and athletes. One can bet they come in with a short leash and understanding you screw up again, then you're out. I've known of cases with extreme results on both sides where kids were the wrong fit and got booted and where others were grateful for the second chance. I like LU's policy there as long as it does not lean towards taking perpetual problem kids, or coddles exceptional athletes who are given leeway at many other schools. Rules are rules and when kids come to LU, either first time students or transferring, you gotta conform. I thought Gill's letter to Sea of Red addressed that issue very well.

That's what you have to watch out for. Not saying it'll happen, but the pressure to produce can cause erosion in principles. Jr. strikes me as exactly the kind of person who will be susceptible to turning a blind eye to problems if it means winning more. He's shown that willingness by hiring McCaw and his willingness to snuggle up to one of the most immoral, low character men in America.

The coziness of Trump by Jr. is the most uncomfortable for me. That said. Trump behaved himself and did a good for LU at the commencement. I was very critical before he spoke, and am still uncomfortable with him being an ally of Jr. And, I was very surprised how well he spoke, on script, and I now believe the benefits of his speaking at LU were greater than the negatives, that were deserved. If he would have gone off script without a teleprompter I'm sure my thoughts would be different. He's likely not going to last this election cycle much less a second term.

Check out the graduation speech by Reese Witherspoon in "Legally Blond". Coincidence? Just sayin'

When Trump plays nice, he's manipulating the audience. Very cynical behavior. He knows where his bread is buttered. Don't let a sleaze ball act nice for half an hour and feel good about it.
