RE: Troy @ Liberty in 2018?
Looks like UMass worked with Liberty and Troy.
Quote:Troy's head coach, Neal Brown, played wide receiver for the University of Massachusetts and Mark Whipple in 2001 and 2002 after transferring from Kentucky. He was also began his coaching career with UMass in 2003, so if there were anyone who might be able to help UMass out as an opposing coach and facilitate a move to late November it would likely be Brown.
..
Per Troy University's official athletics website, their return trip to UMass, originally scheduled for 11/3/18, has been moved to September 19th, 2020.

I bet Troy is getting some cash

They should come to our place first and it should be at least a 2 for 1. I don't like it!

Agreed. This was a bad move by Troy. Should have been a 2 for 1 (obviously in Troy's favor) or no deal. Unless Liberty wrote you guys a big check for a 1 and 1 especially with you guys going there first, you just got outsmarted by the slow kid with an online degree.
That being said, I'm deathly afraid that Coastal will announce a similarly idiotic deal in the coming year. Believe me, I'll be even MORE critical of us if we do it.

Nothing personnel, but SB is not a 2-1 conference for any FBS program. Only a few AAC like Cincy, ECU and Houston probably only G5 to get deals like this.

I like how everyone is speculating it's a bad move for Troy, yet all of you are clueless since none of you are in the athletic department that knows what was negotiated in the contract.
For all of you saying that it was a "bad move" by Troy, are you afraid for your team to play Liberty and lose to them? Or are you afraid that they have cooties that will infect your football team? Or is it simply because it's Liberty and no one should associate with them by playing them in football, which is absolutely stupid if you think that.
Get over yourselves and grow a pair. Like I've mentioned in some other posts, Troy's motto used to be "anyone, anywhere, anytime." Most of your football teams probably have the same mindset. Liberty is no different. If your team is worth their salt, go play Liberty and stomp them into an oblivion...

As I've said in other threads, for the EXACT reason you just posted, Coastal should not play them.
Coastal is fighting a perception battle in the state of SC as "still being FCS" and we will continue to fight that battle for years. Continuining to play a team that we played every year in FCS to the casual fan in SC will just solidify in their minds that we "never moved up."
So it's funny that you posted something to try and tear apart my stance, but you instead just proved my point further. Thank you.
And just for the record, I've also posted on here many times that it wouldn't be good for Liberty if they scheduled us for the same exact reasons it would be bad for us.
The reason Troy shouldn't be scheduling a H/H with them with no money involved are different than Coastal's. Troy is an established program that should consider themselves above that unless they got paid a boat load. Which maybe they did. I HOPE they did. I really do.

I'm afraid to play them because it is an absolute no win scenario for Coastal. We could beat them 77-0 and the casual SC sports fan would just see another FCS game. That is what Coastal is going to be battling to get away from.
My fear of playing a program like liberty has nothing to do with what happens on the field (our series with them is tied all time, and last time we played them we hammer stomped them neck deep in the ground). My fear comes from what the casual observer in the state will see when we play them. Perception is reality and it matters.

Can't even imagine how tough it would be to build a schedule as an independent today. Noticed a couple of Liberty's upcoming seasons during which they play a home and home with New Mexico State during the same season.

So you'd be fine with CCU taking a 2-1 from an "established" CUSA or MAC team?

Bottom line is that going undefeated is the goal. Swapping Liberty for UMass is going to affect the chances of that happening. McClain thought it was a good idea and it will be played. Terms of the deal will likely never been known by the general public.

He should be good with taking a 2-1 from Charlotte. After all they moved a couple of years before CCU and he seemed to be ok with chat type deal with Liberty.

So your intent to not play LU is how the perception of the "casual SC sports fan" will continue to perceive Coastal. That's interesting, and a real twist not to want to play LU. Very unusual when the perception of a casual fan drives scheduling.

If Liberty is now considered an FBS team I have no problem with GS signing a H&H with them. Casual fans won't know the difference if we schedule Liberty, UMass or Western Kentucky so I say go for it although I can understand Coastal fans maybe wanting to hold off for a few years to allow Liberty to be perceived as a FBS school since they used to be in the same league.

Well one could argue that it does. Theres a reason FBS teams don't play at FCS schools and some p5s don't play at G5s or play FCS schools at all. Because they think it will lower their perception.
