WTF: CUSA Never Ceases to Amaze
Am I reading this wrong, or are they seriously considering running the Men's and Women's tournaments in the same gym at the same time AAU style...in a football stadium? Hell lets just host it at the Boo Plex.

And we used to ***** about driving to Richmond every year to play in front of VCU home crowds every March. Perspective is a real *****.

This whole nonsense of not being able to host the tourney in Norfolk because the MEAC tourney is at Scope is a giant smoke screen. Virginia Wesleyan would be a fantastic location for the women's tournament while the men are playing at the Ted.

Even if WVC is taken, there are plenty of other options locally that would be happy to host for the right dollar amount (NSU, Hampton, CNU).

I must be in the minority. I think checking out the Cowboys facilities and watching the tournament there is a massive upgrade compared to going to B-ham or El Paso. Flights would be easier, there's a TON to do when not playing the tournament, and I don't even like the Cowboys... maybe the open air will help our shooting? 05-stirthepot

I like the outside the box thinking. And an easy flight to Dallas.

I too agree that the excuse of the meac here is rubbish. Maury hosts the pro am yearly and churchland hosts the pit. Plus the Vb convention center, Wesleyan, nsu, Hampton, and the Hampton coliseum. Tons of ways to make it work.

I think it sounds like a great place to host the tournament. I would certainly consider going if it was held there.

This is a better and more interesting option than the status quo. Not the best but a step in the right direction.

RE: WTF: CUSA Never Ceases to Amaze
I still believe that a traditional tournament setup in a far-flung conference like CUSA is never going to fly, certainly not when juxtaposed with our memories of the CAA in Richmond. Home court or home-neutral tanks the attendance when the host team bows out, and true neutral ends up being inconvenient for most if not everyone. And home sites throughout sings low-major at a time when CUSA already spends too much time in that choir.

CUSA should do one of the following:
1. No tournament at all. Regular-season champ gets the autobid. Have everyone round robin once to get to 13 games, then divide the league into top seven and bottom seven, and play everyone in your half of the conference while reversing the home court (i.e. if ODU travels to Middle Tennessee in the first part of the regular season, ODU hosts them in the second part). This way everyone gets 19 games, the good teams get more games against other good teams, and the best team gets the bid (bottom-half teams are ineligible for the autobid at this point, to avoid a good No. 8 team storming through outmatched competition and ending up with the best record in the conference while the other good teams are beating each other).
1a. Eight-team tournament using the above scheduling. If you don't mind going further down the NASCAR postseason rabbit hole, then take all of the top-seven teams, and the eighth seed is whoever has the best record in the bottom half. Seeding for the top seven and champion of the bottom seven would be determined by record against that team's half of the league over the course of the season. Tiebreaker is head-to-head, then best record against the top seed, and so on down the line.
2. Round-robin postseason. Take the top four or five teams in the conference and have them play each other on a neutral site over a long weekend. The best teams are likely to have the best support, and they'll also get multiple good games to burnish their NCAA/NIT bonafides, whatever ones they may have by then.

All are unconventional solutions. In some cases, unconventional and convoluted. But I think we can all agree at this point that the tournaments we've been having are not the best way to a) get a good crowd or b) send the best team to the NCAAs. So I say roll the dice on something innovative. If it doesn't work, then fall back to the traditional bracket.

Oh, and speaking of rolling the dice, put whatever tournament in Biloxi permanently. Riverboat casinos, decent weather, proximity to New Orleans. Put the women's tournament in Hattiesburg and have the semis and finals in Biloxi. I'd go.

It needs to start with Marshall, JMU, Liberty, App State, and Charlotte.

And then the best that can be done with WKU, MTSU, UAB, Ga St, GSU, Coastal, etc.

Almost every divisional football game is drivable. Put the basketball tournament in Charlotte and it's within driving distance of every single school as well.

That set up is in the best interest of the fans, the kids, the parents, and the accountants.

OK, now you are talking about realignment, but earlier you just said get out of C-USA and go regional. That left me wondering -- who to go regional with? Of course, realigning with the teams you listed means that teams in both C-USA and the Belt have to want the same thing. Right now, what I am reading on the conference forum indicates most fans who post are not interested. That said, I have no idea what the ADs and school presidents want, and that's all that counts. In general, I agree with you. I would love to see a more highly competive, regional conference emerge from what we see in these two leagues. And, of course, it should include ODU.

Just my two cents, but I'm not sure I see this happening any time soon.

Isn't the Ivy league the only D-1 conference without a tournament? I like your idea, suspect very little chance it would happen.

They began a four-team tournament this past season, so now there's no D-1 conferences that don't hold them. I don't think it's against NCAA regulation to not have one, but I've not heard of anyone considering it.

I think if anyone was going to do it, it'd be CUSA, a conference with a huge footprint and many programs that have middling to poor support.

I'd like to see the G4/5 start a new championship outside the NCAA and get a conference with JMU, VCU (If they add football obviously), Richmond, Charlotte, Marshall, Delaware, Lehigh (or another PA school), App State, Towson. Kind of an FCS/CUSA mix. Or maybe just drop back. The future isn't where we are.
