Karen Barefoot is Gone, Finally
ODU's job posting on one of the basketball sites said applications were being accepted until 5/12 so I imagine next week or the week after is the earliest we will announce a new coach. Need some time for interviews and reference checks with former head coaches and athletic directors.

For all of his faults, I am betting Wood has been working on this for a few weeks now. Probably ever since they gave UNCW permission to speak with her.

Though I don't disagree with you 84, nothing WS has done in the hiring department has given him much benefit of the doubt.

RE: Karen Barefoot is Gone, Finally
Let me ask a serious question: How is the hiring of coaches done at ODU? I know they had search committees for football, MBB. Do they have one for this hire (WBB)? Do they have them as routine for any coaching hire (baseball, soccer, FH)? Do those committees recommend that someone be offered the job? didn't we hire a search firm to help with MBB? I'm NOT letting anyone off the hook for some of the disappointing hires, but I'd like to know the process ODU uses. Not speculation. Facts.

Thanks and not complimenting his decision making, just that he seems to have decent timing

How many old friends does Wood have who coach women's hoops? That seems to be the major qualification.

@TheDancinMonarch you might be right about that. However this time it might work to our advantage. If Nikki McCray is really a candidate, she sounds like a good one. Check out her bio from South Carolina:

Search committees are a waste of money and a cop out. If you don't have the business accuman to see through all the BS that gets thrown your way in these situations or if you have to use one for the appearance of not being biased or conflict of interests, you have no business being there in the first place. Glad to see that is doesn't appear we are using one here. We spend way to much money on studies and committees that are not equipped to see through the BS.

Agreed. Whenever I am paying attention to a search and a committee is involved, it seems like they generate the worst list of retreads I have ever seen.

I think the ADs who consistently make very good hires are plugged in and know exactly who they want to target for coaching changes in the major sports at any given time.

She should be at the top of our list, but does she want us? Were in bad shape.

It would sure be nice to have some diversity in our coaching lineup as well.

If you inform the search committee on what you are looking for, they can streamline the process and provide a service. It's not as simple as ringing up a couple coaches you are interested in hiring.

Perhaps and maybe a search committee is worth spending money on for lower level positions like director of basketball operations, but for something like head coach, I'd want to be running the show and talking to everyone and be open minded with respect to solutions that are presented. You need to hear out each vision as well as plans for execution and make a best value determination on your evaluation criteria... no different really than selecting a contractor to provide a service. You can certainly have hot button issues you want addressed, but usually if you are looking for a specific person or group of people or a checklist of credentials, results will be mixed. You can be the most qualified person in the world on paper, but if you have no vision tailored to where you are going, plan of execution, or motivation... or perhaps your vision is unlikely to work with your recruiting base and its general style of play, it won't matter. Someone that is successful at Northern Iowa recruiting a bunch of sharpshooting white farm kids that play a purely Xs and Os game with precision passing might not be successful at ODU where the recruiting base is urban and the style dominated by isolating the star player and letting him win the game for you. That star player might be have way more talent than the farm boys, but if he played at Northern Iowa, he'd be completely lost for at least 2 years. I just don't think a search committee is equipped to make the evaluation or even screen candidates. In my experience, they are heavy on experience and credentials, but light on fit.

RE: Karen Barefoot is Gone, Finally
I really do not think the last b-ball search committee at ODU was paid at all but if somebody knows different please jump in. I was told the committee had 5 members: one was a former 4 year ODU player, one was a major fan/DONOR, one was a parent of a ODU player, one ODU faculty member (b-ball fan) have no idea on the 5th. Anybody know? In any case except for snacks or soft drinks I don't think they were compensated. Of course, they only made a recommendation and then the higher ups made the actual pick. At least on JJ they higher ups went with the fellow they recommended. If the setup is going to be different this time somebody educate us? Whoops, I should add that JJ was not who they first went for but I think most of you know that story from previous threads. As reported in the Pilot he was the decision after others went away for various reasons including a better offer for one.

RE: Karen Barefoot is Gone, Finally
My recollection is that one member of the committee was a BOV member whose son played for JJ at American. After, as you say, others went away, she suggested Jones because her son had had a really good experience under him at AU. Interviews were done, the deal struck. And I don't think they were compensated, either. . . . There also was a search firm involved, and they may have gone first with recommendation of Enfield, completed their task, and moved on. That's total speculation from me.

Wonder if the range is based on what's out there or whether that's as high as they'll go no matter what. Can't imagine they'd get an ACC coach for 225K, if the Clemson thing was ever legit.

Georgetown lost their coach to Delaware, and one of the candidates to step in is current UNC Greensboro coach and LM alum Trina Patterson. Wonder if ODU kicked the tires on her? Or is the KB connection too much to bear?

The Clemson coach seemed to be on her way out with Karen like numbers, I dont even think shesa good call. Would love to get McCray but withthe low salary and state of the program we will probably have to go for another small school coach with no major accomplishments as of yet. Wish we could get some good news

I had never heard of this coach but it sounds like she has a decent resume.

Can't say I am surprised. This seems to be the M.O. of the current admin.
