RE: Campus construction and projects
(08-18-2017 09:39 AM)Deez Nuts Wrote: USB annex is basically offices and garages for facilities management way back in the site where the old Co-Op was on Grace Street. It's nothing shiny or fancy - it's a long red brick building you would think has been there for a while. Pretty unnoticeable. The old grad school house on Grace street was demolished too. Probably wouldn't notice that's gone. Sonner was discretely renovated but it's not noticeable to the outside.
Hotel Madison and Dhall are the only "visible" projects around at the moment I think. Grace street from Main to Student Success was widened and has a traffic light being installed. MLK/Cantrell is still being widened at the hotel/Mason Street. Campus construction will pick up soon with a new dorm, Wilson reno, parking deck, and (next year) chandler demo/business building, blue ridge hall demo/convo, and Phillips Center-Dukes demo/rebuild
I've been curious about the widening of MLK, and hope that eventually the utilities will be buried. The telephone poles and overhead wiring is an eyesore. Surely the Hotel and entry to that side of campus would be more aesthetically pleasing if the telephone poles come down. It was done on Port Republic long ago, and should be done now along MLK.
One addition that is nice is there is a new set of JMU entrance markers being built at the intersection of Mason and MLK. People will see them when they turn into the new garage at that location.

those signs are nice at MLK/Mason. I too wish they'd bury the utilities at the hotel. I really wish they would have buried them through reservoir street when that started being widened. Drive down main street, then go out to Reservoir St, and tell me the poles on both sides of the street aren't an eye sore.

You're exactly right about those poles. The City of Harrisonburg, HEC, and JMU should be pushing/coordinating to have all utilities buried within the city.

all? sounds very very pricey...funds like that could do a lot of good elsewhere...I've seen some places push them into the alley (when present), but not bury them all outright
any chance of a pic of those new markers?
anyone know if the Dukes/Phillips includes exterior work re-skin?

Dukes/Phillips is a complete demolition and rebuild.
Agree on the utilities being pricey. My motion would be to bury utilities as renovations/expansions come along, not just a full blown replacement.

whoa...demo and rebuild? even the addition that fronts the 'hillside quad'?
I wouldn't mind seeing the red brick scheme just go away... .keep it to bluestone and yellow brick

I think you're thinking of Taylor Hall that faces the hillside field where the band used to practice?

The poles are coming down on MLK , just there to feed the construction needs. HEC and Verizon only put up temp poles to help in the widening of MLK (old Cantrell). The underground conduits are in place.

A helpful list provided by the Breeze. Maybe update the original post Deez?
I see they're listing the new Convo as a fait accompli with a completion date of 2020 (same as the new CoB complex). I know it's been asked here several times, but is the initial Convo fundraising completed?

No the Convo fundraising hasn't been completed, not even close. There is speculation of a corporate naming sponsor being revealed in the Fall.

"Not even close" is an inaccurate comment. Although the completion date of 2020 strikes me as optimistic.

Why? They're breaking ground in the spring and it's a 2 year construction timeline.
Athletics was bent on not beginning this project until the funding was secured. The money is there.

RE: Campus construction and projects
The communication from JMU was that $12 million needed to be raised before construction would begin. The current tracker as of 8/22/2017 indicates they are only 59% of the way to the goal.
Has something changed? If so , drop some knowledge on us.
As I mentioned, there is speculation that a corporate sponsor will be named in the Fall.

That is what I was told in a conversation with the man who should know: "we got that covered".

The "current tracker" has said 59% since it was added to the website.

Yeah, it's pretty difficult to have a "current tracker" when it's just a static image.
Perhaps to inspire people to donate past the point of completion?

Brief update on construction around campus from the Daily Duke. Nothing earth shattering here but some nice pictures.
