This is Eastern: James Thompson
At this year's Ypsi's (ESPY-style award show for EMU athletics), they had some fun with James Thompson's propensity for technical fouls.

James is an awesome player, student and I bet a great person (I never met him) ; however, he needs to improve controlling his emotions because that could sway a game, alter his career path and impact his future post basketball career. I know they were making light of the situation, but I believe it's poor taste.

I actually think it pokes fun at referees more than Thompson. It was kind of funny.

Nickle that's my point. They are making fun of the referees which is basically sayin it's their fault and not Thompson. Anyone who has ever seen James play know that he plays very aggressively at times and several Ts are his fault. Now I love JT4 as a player, and I also love his aggressiveness but he has earned Ts that could sway an outcome either way. He needs to hone that aggressiveness and just play ball. He should be All-MAC the next two years if the coaching staff takes advantage of his talent!

Man, I can't wait until basketball season!! I will think this might be the year. My rationale, this will be the best front court I have seen at EMU since Wilson/Carpenter/Head/Ezugwu/Penissi. I think Minnie/JT4/Steel/LWF will be top of the MAC.

The loss of such a talented trio of guards may hurt. But it also may help to put more focus on the front court. Hopefully the newcomers Harris/Jackson/etc will contribute enough to maintain some balance.

I agree.

A team of Jackson (PG), Minnie (PF), JT4 © and Bond (SF) should be the best quartet in the MAC.

If my understanding is correct, these four should mesh together just perfectly. A lot of athletic ability and quicks.

As everyone has mentioned, SG????????????

Ramy,

JT4 is talented and we saw good spurts from Steele. Minnie is a big question mark in Murphy's system. I agree that we will again have the most talent in the front court.

My vote for our best front court player would be Grant Long. Best front court : Kory Halas and Marcus Kennedy (a bruiser, who was tough, athletic, strong, and very talented). He was a tweener and had a very successful European career after EMU. Plus that team had size and strength role players off the bench. Ah the good ole days..........

BTW, if anyone can find 'tape' on Minnie or Jackson, it would be nice.

Reading stats is one thing. Watching game action tells a lot more.

I'm anxious to see how fast these two are. Will we see track meet style running?

Ask and you shall receive...at least for Paul Jackson. Can't find anything recent for Minnie:

I love this tape. Watch his head...it is ALWAYS up. He looks to make the best play possible, and often that is finding an open teammate. We've never had a playmaker like him under Murphy. You can see why his numbers were so efficient at EKU. An unselfish player.

I have heard very good things about him. A true floor general.

He appeared to have a good floor awareness by knowing when to pass or shoot. Is he a difference maker - time will tell.

An unselfish guard? I agree we haven't seen much of that under Murphy.

Some think that Jackson is the best TRUE PG that Murphy has had at EMU.

We'll see if a TRUE PG is the 'missing piece' to our offense.

I think it will at least be a start. We still don't have nearly enough outside shooting on this team. I'm sure I'm sounding like an annoying broken record at this point, but I REALLY hope that one of those last scholarships goes to a JUCO guard that can knock down shots (IE Eddie Reese). That type of player would thrive with a PG like Jackson, who can get to the hole but actually looks to kick to open shooters.

We've had plenty of guards that can beat their man off of the dribble, but never one (not even Talley) that could consistently find open teammates in better positions to score. I think Thompson will be the biggest benefactor of Jackson, but hopefully Bond and Nobles lock themselves in the gym this summer to be more consistent with their outside shooting.

I agree. As a fmr poster used to say: PGs are the straw which stirs the drink.

A good PG makes EVERYONE better. Behind every successful man there is a good woman. Behind most assisted dunks there is a good PG.

Good point on Talley. I think we really missed having him the last couple years. BUT his talent was as a go-to player the team can rely on, rather than a floor general. Still leadership, just a different keep be. Incredible ball handling and ability to create points for himself, and both with remarkable consistency.

Lampley was the same way. The trio of guards the last two years were incredible talents, but incredibly streaky including with their passing. So I'd agree, Murphy has yet to play a true point guard.

Conversely, my gut feel is that Jackson can not create points for himself like those other 5 guards mentioned above. So waiting to see the net output of his skills.

As for shooting guard, this the easiest position in basketball to fill. So a bit funny EMU does not have much here this year. I would be interesting to see a 6-9 shooting guard in Nobles as you are proposing...
