Fort Wayne Mastadons is such a classic moniker. Hope they succeed on that alone.

Purdue University-Northeast was the other option. They would have been PUNE in that case. Or, "puny", up the interstate from "ooey-pooey".

PUFW was the better choice.

Actually, not bad. The School needed to be under one University name. Helps toward their branding and ability to be available to another conference. Sometimes "naming" means a lot.

The "Pew Ew "doesn't help much. Purdue seems bound and determined to keep that sequence in the name. Never heard Purdue or Penn for that matter use a PU.

P-FWU or UFW-P would eliminate bad sounding acronyms and still uplift Purdue.

Yeah, just repeatedly call themselves "Purdue - Fort Wayne" in all of their documents, and let people apply the PFW abbreviation on their own (even though that sounds more like a labor union, maybe Professional Food Workers).

Commonly, they'll be called Purdue Fort Wayne, which actually sounds better than Purdue West LaFayette (although West LaFayette gets to use the main moniker without the location!). At any rate, for sports they'll still be called Fort Wayne.

Being under one name, especially Purdue's (in my opinion), gives the school academic credibility, which it needs as it builds up its actual academic stature. Again, I believe it's a good branding move.

That's the "International" version, must have locals in Canada as well as the US.

I would have preferred to see Indiana-Fort Wayne and Purdue-Indianapolis ("PUI"), although I still think it would have been better still if IUPUI were Central Indiana.

On the surface, I like the idea of the University of Fort Wayne. The folks in Indiana see it differently. They seek to leverage the prestige of Indiana University and Purdue University. Degrees from IUPUI and IPFW don't come from those campuses, but simply say "Indiana University" or "Purdue University". A degree from IU or PU is seen to be valued more than one from "University of Fort Wayne" or say, "Indianapolis State" or "University of Central Indiana". Therefore, those campuses have been run as branches of IU and PU. According to reports, this caused the bureaucratic conflict that led to the split of IPFW.

Nonetheless, it appears their teams will still compete as the Fort Wayne Mastodons.

100% agree.

And now IUPUI needs to become simply Indiana-Indianpolis. That campus is the home of Indiana University's med school, university hospital, and health science research center. It is Indiana University, for all intents and purposes.

So PU gets one, and IU should get one. Done.

(aside: I think it's dumb that Indiana tries to differentiate its historical flagship public university as Indiana University rather than the University of Indiana, like everyone else ... it comes off as different only in silly sense, not in a meaningful one)

Good idea. I was there last year, and most of the signs simply said "Indiana University". I didn't make it to the part of the campus where the Purdue engineering programs reside, but most of the campus belongs to IU. There is also an IU law school there.

There have to be some political considerations with Purdue people in the state legislature, but it makes sense to let it simply be "IU-I".

RE: IPFW will become PUFW next summer
Also, another question: Will PUFW (aka Fort Wayne Mastodons) assume Purdue's colors of black and gold? All of the other Purdue campuses use black and gold. All of the Indiana campuses use red and white, with IU's logo. IUPUI uses Indiana red and Purdue gold.

IPFW currently uses blue and white, neutral to both IU and PU.
