While I do actually root for the school I am an alumni of, very little of that has anything to do with any kind of school pride. I do get nostalgic going to campus still, but there is nothing about the institution I particularly feel loyalty too. Tuition about doubled by the time I graduated, the education program was set-up in a way that minimized classroom experience until grad school (which was the only way to go for a teaching license), and I have general belief that the college make-up in this country has been extremely detrimental to society (in the sense that we are pushing it for everyone so much of the value of it is lost and people are getting into debt they cannot handle for majors that do little for them).
With Ohio State sports though, rooting primarily to me is an outlet for state pride (there are other Ohio teams, but OSU has big fanbases through most the state). I also have enough fond memories of going to the events that they reinforce my love for it.
That said, I would never in a million years donate money to OSU (for reasons listed above). There would be a lot of other charities I would choose first in a hear beat.
College is a joke unless you go for the right reasons. Everyone has access to the library, books are inexpensive at Barnes & Noble and cheap sluts are abound everywhere, not just in college dorms.
For the fear of hijacking this thread and going OT, I'll leave it there.

This is the most bizarre thing to me. Where did you go for your undergrad?
And yeah, I know that you're actually Irish but to have ZERO feelings for LSU, a football powerhouse while LIVING in the deep south. Strange.
Zero rooting interest for LSU. None. My feelings for LSU are all entirely negative.
I live eight miles from LSU's campus, but never go to any LSU sporting events.
I am a serious non-fan of the SEC. So, I have no interest in following SEC athletics, at all.
My two sons graduated from LSU's School of Engineering. Neither are LSU fans.
But why though? Why are your feelings "entirely negative"? Why go to school there if you feel that way? Hell, why live there?
I'm just trying to understand. I grew up an NCSU fan. Many family members were alumni, boosters, season ticket holders, etc. I can't tell you how many NCSU events I attended. I dropped them like a bad habit.
I didn't like attending LSU Law School. They had a 50% attrition rate (designed that way, on purpose) when I attended. They intentionally went out of their way to make life hell for law students. They did not hide how much they enjoyed it.
So, dislike for LSU began while I was a student.
Now, that all has allegedly changed. But as I told the chancellor when he spoke at my law firm about the horribly low law grad donation rate (the last figure I saw for my graduating class was only 1% donated, I never have), those changes came thirty years too late as far as I was concerned.
So, being a law school alumnus never engendered any loyalty towards LSU for me. Quite the opposite, in fact.
The only time I return there is for a Recent Developments Continuing Legal Education Class each September so I can meet the Supreme Court requirements to keep my law license. I avoid the place otherwise.
As far as LSU athletics, the fans entirely turned me off. I came here with the idea that LSU would be my "second team".
That lasted for two games into the 1983 football season. The constant "we are the best at everything, you never saw real football until you came here. We have the best fight song, stadium, fans, band, etc" was too much.
I witnessed much poor LSU fan behavior against opposing fans as well.
Thirty four years of being in Baton Rouge surrounded by Tiger fans have just cemented my dislike for LSU further. The culture is not for me.
I live in Baton Rouge only because that is where I got a job, raised kids, made partner, etc... I have no affection for the place.
This is just where I ended up because of cheap law school tuition and a job after graduation. I had never been here before my first day of class at LSU Law School, so I had no feelings one way or another for Baton Rouge or Louisiana.
Maybe if I had been born/raised here or grew up an LSU fan, I might feel differently. But, that was not my experience.
I can see why you feel that way about LSU, TerryD, and thank you, on a personal note, for sharing that painful memory. Major, major kudos to you sir, and I wouldn't blame you one bit for wanting to relocate.

Why should Alabama play UAB every year?
Especially when there are three other state schools that actually have a pulse.

I completely sympathize Terry. Some schools treat students the wrong way.
The other day I got a call from one of the 3 schools I am an alum from. They were asking for donations. I told them that I would have been more than happy to donate if they hadn't illegally taken my scholarship away halfway through my program so that they could use it to entice a new student on campus. (In the end I put up with it to maintain my professional network - they had me by the balls and they knew it).
Of my 3 schools, UC was far and away the best at how they treated students. That's why I happily donate to them.

LOL
We are not playing an FCS yearly.
They are not going to be in the SVC any time soon.
If and when it happens it's because GSU left.

I would like to see NIU vs. Northwestern a lot more often if not every year. We're pretty close with some fans in Chicago and environs and we bring good crowds to Evanston. And the games are good games.

Notre Dame should play the following teams annually:
Boston College
Pittsburgh
Miami
What's more, I have an easy solution ;-)

Why, full football membership to the ACC, of course!
(did you really have to ask?)

Terry is pushing for it pretty hard, but I'm not sure the ACCwoukd give them an invite w/o a #16.

Those are the big ones that come to mind. Having the Big East and Big 12 scatter really ruined things.

All three of PA's commonwealth schools should be forced to play one another. Pitt-Temple should be an annual thing, like Pitt-PSU and PSU-Temple.
