How long before Liberty becomes surpasses JMU and ODU?
It's approaching crunch time for LU. What has been desired for years becomes a reality soon. At present, the obvious top dog in VA in FB is Virginia Tech. UVA has been mired in the backseat for years. ODU had very good success in short term FCS and is finding the success harder to achieve in FBS. JMU can thump it's chest with FCS championships but is relegated to playing teams that will not develop the program beyond FCS interest. Richmond and W&M are happy with FCS.

As LU enters big boy football, there are two questions looming. Can LU rival and surpass ODU? Can LU rival UVA? The continual success of VT places it on another level that would take many years for LU to rival VT.

Lastly, LU will soon surpass JMU in most all aspects of FB when LU begins to play quality FBS opponents, especially at Williams Stadium. One has to acknowledge the FCS success JMU has accomplished. But JMU is soon to be relegated behind LU, and most can argue that JMU is behind ODU at present.

Edit note: just noticed that "behind" was left out of the post in the last sentence. It's now added.

LU on the same level as UVA or VT? Unless we get into a P5 we will never be on their level. LU will equal ODU but not pass them since we will both be in the G5 group. Everyone else you mentioned that is FCS. Of course we will pass them in name recognition since we will have FBS teams coming to the Bill. FCS is largely invisible and that's not changing soon.

I think ODU has been quite successful their first few years of FBS. I'd love for us to be that competitive out of the gate.

I'm with you, Army. I love our trajectory but we have a ton to prove. We aren't going head-to-head with JMU on the recrutiing trail near as much this year as in the past. So I don't know how much they factor into our football existence these days even with their FCS title.

Granted LU will very unlikely reach status of VT. But LU is much closer to rivaling UVA with UVA's dismal FB performance the past several years. The strength of UVA's basketball program will keep them in the forefront. When LU will eventually play and beat UVA in FB, that will cause a tremendous impact for LU and anti sentiment for UVA. When JMU beat VT, that was a big deal for JMU and that added to the success of JMU. But JMU remaining FCS caused that to be more of a flash in the pan rather than an impact win. It had major significance at the time but it will wane with time. When App beat Michigan, it had the same impact only greater than JMU beating VT. But App had FBS aspirations and that win today has a greater impact with App being FBS than JMU's victory over VT.

The same inclination can be true for LU with a signature win over a ACC foe whose program is down. But one cannot expect UVA to remain in the doldrums forever and they will improve. The question is will LU improve sufficiently enough to play and beat UVA before UVA makes changes and improves?

One can hope and expect LU to slug it out initially with ODU for 3rd place among the 4 FBS programs in VA. And it will be interesting to watch how LU and ODU advance and whose excels the most in the quest.

"The triumph punctuated a remarkable season for the Monarchs, who were picked to finish sixth in Conference USA’s East Division, but went on to win nine of their last 10 games and finished 10-3."

I think those of us at FAU would like their type of "struggling"

I suspect once Liberty starts really playing in fbs, suddenly JMU will show interest and C-USA will likely be the target for JMU.

RE: How long before Liberty becomes surpasses JMU and ODU?
Unless JMU announces FBS by the 6/30 (I think) deadline, then Liberty is already ahead of their football program and any other FCS team. ODU is having great results that I would be happy if LU replicated. ODU is clearly ahead of LU at this time.

Virginia and VT will almost always have a better program than Liberty. That doesn't mean LU won't finish higher in the rankings some years but the two ACC schools will have built in advantages and has had generations of history that Liberty has to catch up on. It would immensely help if Liberty were accepted to a P5 conference but until then, or until Liberty is accepted as a power independent like Notre Dame, Liberty will always be handicapped compared to those two Virginia ACC schools.

50 years from now Liberty can be on the same playing field as UVa and VT. History and tradition will even out if LU wins, wins big, and rivals BYU and ND as far as competition.

As the level of competition shrinks between LU and VT/UVA, so will reduce the perception. One can bet that when and if LU plays UVA, most all VT fans will root for LU. And vice versa. And when LU begins to plays heads up and close games, and win games, that time frame will shorten. Hopefully 8-10 years rather than 50.

RE: How long before Liberty becomes surpasses JMU and ODU?
Y'all are past JMU already imo. ODU is still ahead but I don't think it will take long to pass them either. Y'all being private will pull national fans as opposed to a regional school like ODU. I doubt y'all will ever be perceived with VT or even UVA. The only way that happens is if you get a P5 bid, I don't see that happening ask BYU. Y'all have potential but I think y'all will get a BYU feel and nothing wrong with that it's just a lot different than how UVA and VT are perceived. You can be a better team or program but people will still lump you as not a P5. It's just how college football works. Like ECU vs Kansas it's the conference that pulls the weight.

How so AM? One could state that JMU with their FCS success has far exceeded LU prior to LU receiving indy status. With LU's indy announcement, one could also state that LU and JMU are near equal or that JMU still has the edge. Lastly, when LU announces it FB schedule and quality G5 and P5 teams come to LU, that will definately shift the lever towards LU. If LU gets blown out in home field loses by wide, disparate margins, JMU will have a case they are equal or have the edge. Either way, LU will or exceed JMU simply because of FCS vs. FBS.

Regarding ODU, with them being FBS for several years, they clearly have the advantage now. How that shifts and changes in the future will simply be determined by who winds on the field. With the positive mentions by admins at ODU towards scheduling LU in the past, that bodes very well for LU, and hopefully can create a lasting rivalry.

There just seems to be a lot of "when" and "if." I am excited too and see great potential. I am just pulling my reins a bit. I'm gonna see how things play out. I'm not trying to discredit anybody's opinion. I share them as well.

It's April spring practice has finished and we're 120+ days away from games that count. Content now is light to discuss as most LU fans are clinging to at least an announcement of upcoming FBS games and schedules.

RE: How long before Liberty becomes surpasses JMU and ODU?
I just had to update this thread from months ago. Contrary to a fairly large number of JMU fans, LU now has officially smoked JMU with achieving FBS. To those, in mostly desperation, who want to disparage LU because of their resources, and creative means to a) achieve FBS and b) to create an outstanding FB schedule in a very short time, man up. You had your chance and you blew it with the SBC debacle. And your best, past FCS rivals have all passed you by. Enjoy your FCS games. It's what many of you want and what you will receive. To those JMU fans who commend LU for the FBS move, good luck. It seems you will need it. And to those who do not, enjoy Hampton, that killer ETSU, Norfolk State, and Elon. Hey, they are close games you drive to.

I would trade our football past with JMU's, but I wouldn't trade our football future with them. They can stay in FCS if that's what they want. I'd rather be FBS and we're passing them by whether they believe it or not.

What prompted me to revise this old thread is much of the current diatribe on the JMU board about how great things are where they are. Well enjoy it guys. I'll take Army, ODU, UVA, Auburn, any day as an indy over being FCS and bet that LU will continue to schedule aggressively in the future. Just wait until the stadium expansion of LU is announced and LU bypasses JMU again with their 1/2 stadium.
