But 8 were to two teams. The two best we played, NC State and WKY. 13 TDs passes allowed in the other 11 games. It doesn't get any better than that. But how much of that was due to the teams we played and how much to how well the defense did? Until we can stop the better teams, and reverse the trend of giving up an avg of 45+ points per game to the good teams we play, I will not buy into this defense. I will repeat, for all the stats you can quote about Addison, I will point to 0 passes intercepted and 0 passes defended/broken up against APP St, NC State and WKY - all losses.

It's not all on the secondary. We got very little pressure in those games.

Yep. Your secondary is only as good as your defensive line.

Did I miss it, or has there not been any news about Melvin Vaughan?

Also, I watch most of the post practice reports. Ever notice how Wilder always rubs his hand over his mouth before he speaks? and he seems to have dropped the " have a good day 12th Monarchs" line.

Update from Ed on Melvin (hint; it's good news);

Chris Kirtley has disappeared from the roster on the ODU website. (So has the the QB Scheckells). I hope Kirtley has not left. Anyone know the situation?

I knew about Verhaegh...didn't know about Scheckells but with Hoy coming in and Arnold and LaRussa, I am not surprised there.

Kirtley is more than surprising, however.

As a former NFL agent for kickers, punters and LS, I am concerned about Brad Davis. His ball rotation is not true and he has lots of mechanical flaws. He barely taps any of his potential power. If we have to rely on him, he needs some significant training from a kicking specialist. I was able to obtain a review of his game film from one of my trusted kicking instructors, and the advice the instructor gave to the coaches really helped him, but he needs some intensive training to really develop.

Negotiable. Often $500 per week.

RE: Spring Game take aways
I briefly mentioned this in my initial post to this thread, but thought it might be fun to discuss the 21 package we got a glimpse of early in the game. The thought of Lawry and Cox in the backfield at the same time, along with a tight end, really sounds exciting. Throw in some play action passes from whoever is at QB, and I just don't see how anybody, including a couple of ACC teams, will be able to stop that attack, especially if we sign that monster JUCO tight end from California that we offered (Darrion Jones, 6'6" 245), and dual threat Hoy turns out to be all we hope him to be at QB.

These guys could absolutely redefine offense at ODU.

And, btw, if you have not seen Jones, he has great hands too. Right now we are the only one to offer him, but I don't see how that lasts. Here's his Hudl video.

Will you explain the 21 package?

2-backs
1-tight end
All in the backfield.

Aggie if I am wrong...correct me.

Will you explain the 21 package?

21 just refers to the number of RBs and TEs in the base package (2 RBs, 1 TE). The amount of wide receivers is directly affected by the personnel package. If you increase or decrease the number of RBs or TEs, the amount of wide receivers corresponds oppositely. For example, in a 21 you have 2 WR. However, if you moved to a 22, adding one TE, you would be down to 1 WR. If you go to a 11, you add 1 WR, giving you 3.

The 21 personnel package has different variations but one most people are associated with is the power I.

RE: Spring Game take aways
As noted above, the 21 is composed of two RBs and one TE.

When a team is referred to as running ma "pro set" or a pro style offense, it is most often the personnel package designated as the "21".

This will be noting like what we have ever run before. I expect we would run a lot of play action passes, delayed draw plays, and short passes to the RBs in the middle from this set.
I don't expect us to abandon the air raid spread completely. and with HOY we may finally run a true read option.

Ironically, this package would have been well suited to Shuler Bentley's skill set. if the OL is ready.

Yeah, that kid + 2 RB's would be a nightmare to cover.

Some of yall are talking like Hoy is getting the starting job already. Hoy still has to show up and mesh with the players within a 2-3 month period. Remember when a lot of yall anointed SB the second coming of TH, yeah that didn't workout for us. Currently speaking of the two qbs we have on the roster I think the 21 fits BL the best, watching the spring game his hand offs to the running backs were beautiful and executed the bootleg pass to the receiver crossing the middle of the field nicely. I am glad Hoy is coming and look forward to seeing him play but until he is slapping asses in the end zone at practice in 3 months I wouldn't disregard our other two QBS on the roster.

When I said that kid I meant the 6'6" TE. I think any of QB's could thrive with those kind of weapons if the OL gives them 3 seconds. They're all "smaller" but appear to have the quickness to roll.
