Question Seahawks in the Pros
New Seahawk Baseball players in the pros update thread.

I'm not sure about all the others, but I have the Cubs/Dodgers ESPN gamecast running here and Chris Hatcher (former UNCW catcher) is pitching the bottom of the 8th for Los Angeles against the meat of the Cubs lineup. I'm a Cubs fan, but I hope Hatch does well and stays healthy this year!

RE: Seahawks in the Pros
Hatch struck out Kyle Schwarber looking, walked Kris Bryant, and pitched Rizzo into a groundball double play. Thankfully though, the Cubs were already up 4-0.

Hatch completes another inning of work. 2 innings, one single, one walk, and three K's in the middle of the Cubs' pitcher busting lineup. Not bad at all!

Watched Hatch also. He was firing 96 mph fastballs. I hope he stays healthy & has a great year (even though I am anti-dodger).

I wish he was good enough to actually pitch for UNCW!

I would say he was. However, that arm was nasty throwing out would be base stealers consistently. Hatch had a cannon back there!

RE: Seahawks in the Pros
Kelly Secrest (LHP, 2011-14), a 10th-round pick by the Mets in 2014, has been at the AAA level since August 21 of 2017.

In that span with Las Vegas, he has made 7 appearances, posting a 2.70 ERA and striking out 8 batters in 10.0 innings.

AAA righty Corey Oswalt was the latest to get called up for the Mets, but it seems to me only a matter of time before Kelly gets his shot. Bullpens are getting deeper and deeper, and lefties come at a premium.

RE: Seahawks in the Pros
RHP Evan Phillips was recently called back up by the Orioles and pitched on July 26th. He tossed an inning @ Angels, giving up 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 2 and walking none. Over 2 MLB seasons with the Braves and Orioles he has made 26 appearances and is 0-2 with a 9.90 ERA, 27 K's and 15 BB's in 30.0 innings of work.

C/LF Ryan Jeffers (Twins system) recently got promoted to Pensacola (AA) on July 25th. He was hitting .256 with 10 HR and 40 RBI with Fort Myers (A+) prior to his promotion. In 3 games with Pensacola he is 4-12 (.333) with 1 HR and 2 RBI.

RHP Austin Warren (Angels system) recently got promoted to Mobile (AA) and made his first appearance on July 27, tossing 2 scoreless innings out of the pen and striking out 3 while allowing just 1 baserunner (1 hit). He was promoted from Modesto (A+), where he had made 27 appearances and gone 2-7 with a 3.30 ERA, 2 Saves, 63 K's and 21 BB's over 43.2 innings.

OF Robbie Thorburn (Orioles system) got promoted to A+ ball with the Frederick Keys back on June 20th after hitting .278 with 4 HR and 14 RBI and 4 SB with Delmarva (A). So far for the Keys he's hitting .213 with 2 RBI and 5 SB in 105 AB's.

OF Casey Golden (Rockies system) has been with Lancaster (A+) all season and is hitting .266 with 16 HR, 46 RBI and 8 SB in 293 AB's.

RHP Alex Royalty (Indians system) has spent all of 2019 with Lake County (A) after splitting time last year at Rookie Ball and Mahoning Valley (A-). This season at A he has made 17 starts and is 5-5 with a 4.11 ERA, 73 K's and 31 BB's over 76.2 innings.

RHP Clark Cota (A's system) is in his 2nd season with Vermont (A-). In 10 appearances he has a 4.05 ERA with 27 K's and 11 BB's over 20.0 innings.

RHP Seth Frankoff (Doosan Bears) is currently pitching in the Korean Baseball Organization, where he is 4-6 with a 4.41 ERA, 61 K's and 16 BB's over 69.1 innings thru 13 starts.

LHP Kelly Secrest last pitched at the AAA level for the Mets (who drafted him in the 10th round in 2014) in 2018 before being released in May of that year, and has yet to land with another organization. For Las Vegas from 2017-18 he made 9 appearances and had a 6.39 ERA with 10 K's and 9 BB's over 12.2 innings. He is 27 years old.

RHP Chris Hatcher remains an MLB Free Agent after declaring as such in October 2018; he last played for the A's and is 34 years old. Over his MLB career with the Marlins, Dodgers and A's he made 250 appearances and is 12-17 with a 4.55 ERA, 5 Saves, 266 K's and 98 BB's over 265.1 career innings of work. He is one of the 2 most successful Seahawk pros all-time along with Carl Willis.

RE: Seahawks in the Pros
Aug 19 update:

Evan Phillips made his 18th appearance of the season for the Orioles, but once again struggled mightily. In an inning of work at Yankee Stadium, he allowed 3 runs on 2 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2. On the 2019 season he's 0-1 with an 8.84 ERA and 2.22 WHIP on 19.1 IP, with 29 K's and 17 BB's.

Ryan Jeffers (Twins system) has played 11 games at the AA level (Pensacola), and is hitting .308 with 3 HR and 6 RBI in 39 AB's. At 22 years old he still has plenty of developing to do, and as a 2018 2nd round pick, the Twins are certainly invested in his development. It would be huge if he could get promoted to AAA either nearing the end of the season or in 2020.

Austin Warren (Angels system) has made 5 appearances for AA Mobile, with his most recent appearance coming on Aug 16. He's 1-1 with a sterling 1.29 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 7.0 innings of work, with 9 K's and 5 BB's. The former 6th round pick is 23 years old and could also find himself in AAA by 2020.

Robbie Thorburn (Orioles system) had a nice weekend for the A+ Frederick Keys. He went 4-12 with a Double and 2 RBI against Fayetteville. He lifted his average at the A+ level to .214 and now has 4 RBI in 126 AB's. Not great, but some positive news. However, at 24 and as a 2017 31st round pick he's running out of time.

Casey Golden (Rockies system) continues to rack up nice numbers for A+ Lancaster. He's hitting .268 with 23 HR and 60 RBI in 351 AB's. However, he turns 25 on Sep 1. Hopefully the 2017 20th round pick will get a promotion to AA before the season ends. He may need to lift his average and OBP (.367) to make that happen.

Alex Royalty (Indians system) is struggling at A Lake County. He made his 21st start of the season on Aug 16 and took his 7th loss of the season, allowing 3 ER on 5 H over 5.0 innings while striking out 4 and walking 5. On the season at the A level, he's now 5-7 with a 4.42 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 87 K's and 42 BB's in 95.2 innings. Given that he's still just 22, was an 8th round pick and does have a solid K/BB ratio, he still has plenty of time to prove himself in the Indians system.

Clark Cota (A's system) is performing well at A- Vermont. In his last 2 outings he's pitched scoreless innings, allowing just 2 baserunners (1 BB, 1 HP) and striking out 1. In 16 appearances he's 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.50 WHIP with 36 K's and 18 BB's. The 2018 10th rounder turns 23 in October and will hopefully get a promotion to A ball soon.

Seth Frankoff (Doosan Bears, KBO) has gotten 16 starts for Doosan in the Korean Baseball Organization and has performed fairly well. He is 5-7 with a 4.18 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 75 K's and 22 BB's in 84.0 innings of work. At 30 years old he's carved out a nice pro career to this point.

No news on Chris Hatcher since my last update.

Also, Nick Feight (2017 19th rounder - Padres) was released on May 23 after struggling a A Fort Wayne over the 1+ seasons.

RE: Seahawks in the Pros
I would imagine Chris Hatcher has seen the last of his pro ball days. Sad, because he was a player during my time as a student and was a lot of fun to watch.

He had a great career though. The lack of interest in him as a FA sings the painful words from 'Moneyball'...

"We're all told at some point in time that we can no longer play the children's game, we just don't... don't know when that's gonna be. Some of us are told at eighteen, some of us are told at forty, but we're all told."

If it is indeed the end for Hatch... well done! Proud of his time at UNCW and in the pros.

Agreed with all of the above!

However, I also wouldn't be surprised to see him go to an Independent League if he gets the "itch", again. To quote the final line from Jim Bouton's Ball Four, after talking about how even if he only had a small chance of getting another opportunity in the bigs, he'd keep pitching in the Minor Leagues as long as he could:

"You see, a ballplayer spends a good piece of his life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.”

Austin Warren continues to dominate at the AA level. In his last outing on Aug 22 for the Mobile BayBears, he went 3 innings out out of the pen, allowing 1 unearned run on 2 hits while striking out 2 and walking 1. His ERA is now down to 0.82 thru 7 appearances.

FORMER SEAHAWK RYAN JEFFERS INVITED TO TWINS BIG LEAGUE CAMP

WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY)–Former UNCW baseball standout Ryan Jeffers will have his opportunity to impress the Minnesota Twins this spring. Jeffers was one of the non-roster players to receive a invite to big league spring training.

Jeffers started last season in High-A ball before getting the call up to Double-A midway through the season. He continued to wrack up the big stats hitting .264 with 14 home runs in 103 games.

The catcher was drafted with the 59th overall pick by the Twins back in 2018 after stellar three year career at UNCW.

RE: Seahawks in the Pros
Greg Jones was spotted this week working out with the Rays in Port Charlotte. Minor League Spring Training doesn't begin until March, so Jones is getting a look from the big club until then, much like Jeffers.

https://www.prospects1500.com/al-east/ra...prospects/

Tampa Bay Rays 2020 Top 50 Prospects

6. Greg Jones, SS

Age: 21 (3/7/1998)
2019 Highest Level: A-
.335/.413/.461, 1 HR, 19 SB, 10.1 BB%, 25.7 K%

Jones enjoyed a very productive season in the New York-Penn League after being selected No. 22 overall in last year’s MLB draft. He predictably showcased his plus-plus speed tool by stealing 19 bases in only 48 games played, and also displayed a quick swing that translated to immediate success at the plate. Jones finished the year with the second highest OPS (.874) in the league, demonstrating his ability to hit the baseball often, and with authority from both sides of the dish. He may not have the most power potential, but his speed should allow him to rack up plenty of extra base hits with room for more as he adds loft to his swing and continues to grow into an athletic 6’2” frame. Jones should be a candidate to ascend quickly throughout the system, as his advanced skill sets and defensive versatility (has experience in the OF from college) should play well in a system ripe with young middle infield talent. He put himself on the map in his junior season at UNC Wilmington (.341/.491/.543, 5 HR, 42 SB, 18.9 BB%, 15.1 K%) right before being drafted less than a year ago, so perhaps he’s only beginning to scratch the surface of his massive potential.

RE: Seahawks in the Pros
Evan Phillips, now in his 4th MLB season, has made 8 appearances to date for the Orioles in middle relief in this shortened season. In 7.2 Innings of work he is 1-1 with a 5.87 ERA, 2 Holds, 9 K's, 7 BB's and a 2.09 WHIP. In his last 4 appearances he has allowed 9 baserunners but none ended up scoring.

Ryan Jeffers has been with the Twins' alternate site all season. MLB.com ranks him the # 6 prospect in the Twins' system. Mitch Garver, Alex Avila and Willians Astudillo currently stand in his way at Catcher, while the LF depth chart has Eddie Rosario, Jake Cave, Marwin Gonzalez and LaMonte Wade as the top options. Should anything happen to any of those players, Jeffers might have a chance to end up on the active roster this season.

Seth Frankoff was let go by the Padres, but on August 10th he signed with the Mariners to a minor league deal. He is with the team's alternate site currently. For the last 2 seasons, Frankoff has been pitching in the Korean Baseball League. His last MLB appearance was in 2017 with the Cubs.

Greg Jones is listed as the Rays' # 11 prospect per MLB.com, but is not on the 60-man roster. He is expected to start with the team's Class A affiliate, Bowling Green, next season.
