House Bill 728
A bill has been introduced in the NC legislature that would require state schools to withdraw from conference membership should the conference remove championships from the state (as was done with hb2). Although this is meant to be a move against the acc - it could also cause other state supported schools to withdraw their conference affiliations should those conferences move their championships.

I think it was Mark Twain who said (I could be mistaken) - No one's life, liberty or property is safe while the legislature is in session.

I am no north carolina person in any way, but I have a hard time seeing that bill pass.

The nc general assembly continues to be a source of embarrassment to an awful lot of us.

I like the law. Screw these liberal Chancellors sticking their nose in politics. If they take a political stand as a conference, I agree 100 % that we should leave that conference. Two can play this game. These are state funded schools, under complete authority of the legislature. Furthermore, every Chancellor should be required to be transparent in their vote or lose their job.

RE: House Bill 728
I'm still not convinced on whether I like every detail of the law or not, however...

I do love that NC is telling the NCAA (as a whole or as conferences) to keep their asses out of politics and attempting to dictate social policy on state governance. That part of the law, I very much like. IMO, the NCAA has brought this on themselves by joining in the fray of "boycott NC" nonsense.

If this is the case though, I could see the Gov veto being used.

Say this passes.

The CAA could then get rid of UNCW if they ever wanted to my simply boycotting the state of NC.

Do you really want to put the future of our conference affiliation in the hand of northern private school chancellors/presidents.

Having said that this is a stupid attention seeking bill by some no name low intelligence representative trying to be cute and it is not going to get out of committee, much less pass both legislative bodies.

This is a silly waste of time and our tax dollars. Unless it's designed to expose the NCAA and especially the NBA as the money hungry hypocrites that they are. If they were the soldiers of equal rights they portray themselves to be, then they would pull all the games they play in countries that imprison, turtore and/or kill those they pretend to defend. But, for them it's still about the Benjamins. Which makes them just pathetic.

I'd call those northern schools' bluff and say "try it". I'd be willing to bet other southern based schools wouldn't be so thrilled to have some rogue Yankees getting all buster happy on the conference. Plus, judging from this year's CAA final, I'd be willing to bet the commissioner would rather boot a northern school than us. Just saying.

Maybe at this point in time, but there could come a time again where UNCW is not wanted. Before the original Northern 4 joined the CAA after Richmond, American, and ECU left there was a merger planned between the VA schools and the American East that would have sent UNCW begging to the Southern conference but likely to the Big South. Fortunatley that did not happen.

I don't want UNCW to give any leverage to others and this bill would do so.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not arguing for the bill really. I'm arguing for any way that politicians can stick it to non-political organizations that go on these social-justice hypocrisy patrols the NCAA has been on for quite some time now.

N C'S general assembly has the reputation for forcing through questionable & downright crazy legislation. If you don't believe it check on the speaker ban law (prohibiting speakers with communist leanings from speaking on campus) that was rammed through in 1963(?). Reread my Mark Twain quote.

RE: House Bill 728
A relative was Speaker of the NC House when the Speaker Ban Law passed in 1963. That law passed. HB728 has no chance.

The good news is NC has a huge surplus, so the legislature is not meeting around the clock sweating what to cut or what taxes have to be raised to balance the budget. Some members are using their free time to draft bills that have no chance of being enacted.

Exactly. Silly waste and time and print. Some clown(s) are just looking for publicity with this bill. Unfortunately, NCAA and NBA along with a lot of other company's are about the dollar. To steal one from Doc, their's and the politicians' hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Wrong on all accounts. They are being proactive in announcing what the penalty will be if Chancellors running athletic conferences attempt to interfere in NC politics again. Conferences without universities have no value. It's about time a legislative body stood up and assured the tail wasn't wagging the dog. These are state institutions owned by the taxpayers, they do not belong to Chancellors, they are entrusted to them.
And if they act collectively against the best interests of our taxpayers, adios .

It's really that simple.

A non NC chancellor will not give 2 thoughts about what the NC General assembly says and the NC university would suffer

I don't operate out of a constant state of fear in what someone might do because of my decisions. Just how I'm wired. That's why I like it. I'm with '82.
