RE: Statement from Tom Bowen
Beyond the fact that the statement itself is absurd, I find it very interesting that the man who REALLY hired Tubby is totally silent. In the meantime Bowen is forced to release this ridiculous statement to support a guy he never wanted in the first place.

Even if by some miracle we were to get rid of Tubby tomorrow, I have zero faith that this administration has the first clue about hiring the right coach.

Agreed. I don't think he's wanted to be here for the last two years.

Am I missing something? Tubby signed with Memphis on April 14, 2016... which means he hasn't been here a full calendar year yet. He has certainly only coached a single season for us.

I meant Bowen. I've read/heard that he and Rudd don't see eye-to-eye on a lot, the Tubby hiring being a major example.

I'm not sure who is in charge of memphis athletics, but to say i'm disappointed is saying it mildly. And this is about a lot more than just the lawsons leaving. This is about decisions over the last few years in basketball and football.

What are the issues you're seeing with football? Our football program has been awesome for the last few years. With the upgrades to the Liberty Bowl, the addition of Tiger Lane, the marketing around the program, and the success on the field, this has literally been the most fun time for Tiger football in my life.

I feel we cheaped out on the contract extension for fuente. The buyout was low. We offered a lot more money just months later when fuente was looking elsewhere. Even though i know he could have left for other reasons, i still feel we cheaped out the first time.

But it's all good, i like norvell. I'll give them credit for hiring him. Since we also failed to get into the big 12 or another big conference, it will be hard to keep him.

2nd part of football is i don't like the current trend of future out of conference opponents.

This upcoming spring game could have been marketed better. There are still some small things they could do to make the LB experience more enjoyable for fans.

Gotcha. I see your points. I think we could have been more proactive with Fuente, but he would have probably left for VT no matter what the parameters of the agreement were. I would have liked a better buyout than what was written.

On the schedule, it's going to become increasingly more difficult to schedule a strong OOC. The SEC is shaping it's strategy to where it either schedules cupcakes or Power 5 opponents. We can look to other P5s (such as UCLA), but that will also become more difficult in future years.

The Spring game has been VERY poorly managed this year. We're three days away and I've hardly heard a thing. This event brings in no money for the university, so I guess I understand their reluctance to invest too much in it. But, it is a big recruiting opportunity and (if done right) could lead to season ticket sales.

You made good points, but I definitely do like the direction our football program is going (assuming we continue to invest in it).

We will whine as long as expectations are not met. Expectations are to compete for conference championships and/or make a Sweet 16 every so often.

If you don't like the fact we whine about what I outlined above, then I have the perfect school for you to follow: Georgia Tech.

Unfortunately, I think we get two more years of Tubby.

And everyone can skip reading the statement. It just says "all is well, kids transfer these days" what a load of crap

I saw somewhere that 400 transfers averages out to about two per team. We've already had six.

If there's roughly 350 D1 schools 2 per team would be about 700 per year.

Well what exactly was Bowen supposed to say that would satisfy folks, Tubby's fired? That's not happening any time soon. Any thoughts on what Bowen could do behind the scenes like make Tubby hire a bona-fide local recruiter? Read him the riot act that his performance is unacceptable?

It would have better to say nothing than release nonsense. Tiger fans are not fools.

Yeah that probably would've been best but I seem to recall some folks around here wanting to hear something from the admin about the situation. They get it and then they're pissed.

Then the fans would be mad because he didn't say anything.

TiminMem23 wrote a better PR statement than Bowen on pg 4 of this thread.

"Memphis basketball is a proud program with a storied tradition. It's clear that in recent years we haven't achieved the success that is expected and demanded by our administration and our fans.

We hired Coach Smith because we believe he will turn things around and put Memphis basketball back where it belongs. We know that these things do not happen overnight, and we will be patient with Coach Smith as he gets his system in place. I have had multiple conversations with him, and he knows what the goals are: Develop high level student athletes, compete for conference championships and return to the NCAA Tournament. These are things we expect to see in the next 2-3 years."

Some folks say he doesn't care about basketball although we're building new top notch practice facilities. Then others seem to say he was concerned enough about basketball to oppose Tubby's hire. I have no idea what any of that indicates.

But all these guys are always getting out of Dodge, onward and upward is the career path.
