Berenson calls it quits
http://www.freep.com/story/sports/colleg...100290570/
Saw this one coming, should be interesting to see who gets this type of job. One rumor I did hear that Jeff Blashill was a top prospect to this job, although Holland states that he is safe. He may make more money as the U of M coach then wings coach.

I think it's Mel's job if he wants it.

IF Blashill ever comes back to the college ranks-which I doubt-he could come back to WMU for a $ 400k salary.

And that's why I said 'which I doubt'. He'll never make the salary as a college coach that he would in the NHL. Only if he is fired as a NHL HC would he be looking at the colleges.

Blashill has a better chance of success at UM than he does working for Ken Holland.

If this was before he took the Tech job then his promotion would have been announced at the same press conference as Red's retirement. Now, it's not as much of a slam dunk. There's likely some strong pressure to look outside the Red coaching tree after the mediocrity of the last 5 seasons.

Mel is also very old. They probably want someone who's going to be around longer than Mel. Also, Mel's got a great gig at Tech.

He's kind of old, but he's 20 years younger than Red.
TIL I share the same birthday as Mel Pearson (just 22 years later)

Yeah, but he's not Red either, though I believe Mel doesn't get as much credit as he deserves for Michigan's success over the years as it's not a coincidence UM's downfall started when Mel left.

Most coaches don't wait as long as Red did to retire though.
