I'm probably wrong but I've always felt that our academic reputation and the fact that we are an urban, commuter school makes us a tough sell on the good kids from good families.
Guys like Thad Young and Leslie McDonald were leaving town even when Cal was here, we got Eliot Williams but only after he went to Duke first.
Some might point to Austin Nichols but in hindsight, if the things being said about him are true can you really call him one of the good kids?
Even Cal knew that to get elite talent to Memphis you have to put up with some headaches and baggage from time to time. Shawne Williams, Sean Banks, Derek Rose, etc... He even took on some head cases that were not what you would call elite level talent, Kareem Cooper comes to mind.

Josh had a ton of players transfer before finishing their eligibility. Markel was the last of Josh's six-player class of 2013 to leave early. The other five transferred while Josh was still here.
And Pastner was steadily landing good recruits. This guy is getting bad Jucos and Division II kids.
You've seen them, huh?

Lost a lot of White Station kids over the years.
Heck, we lost Austin Hollins to some bum way up at Minnesota.

Sadly, he will never sign a higher ranked local kid.

Josh never had a recruiting class that good after that one blew up. If he had not hired Keelon, Josh may have been run off a year earlier.
