No one should be excited about or celebrating the possible departure of Paul Weir. A strong, stable WAC is what really benefits all programs, in both the short and long term.
We all need Aggies at their very best, and Runners at their very best, and Lopes at their very best, and right on down the line for any team or program to have a shot at better seeding & prospects in the tourney. That's why I'm happy to root for other conference members, outside of head-to-head contests.
Here is to hoping with (some) Aggie fans that Weir comes to his senses and steers this situation away from the cliff he's about to drive over.
NMSU will be fine, but they will need to spend more money on a head coach. Then can do it, they have the FBS money. NMSU will get $1.7 million in 2019 to play at Alabama. That kind of money helps a lot.
I would make a run at Joe Dooley (FGCU) or former UTEP Head Coach Tony Barbee. Annual salary will have to be in the $400,000 to $500,000 range for these type of coaches. They need to move quickly before recruits start walking away.

New Mexico State will be fine. The next head basketball coach will be successful in year #1.

I'd become unhinged too. What a conversation for Weir after 1 year to tell the people who gave him a chance in the industry and his players he is moving to the hated other in-state team. I don't root against non-P6's often but I'll root against Weir and the Lobos.

For the most part, I really don't root against UNM unless they are playing NMSU. That has now changed. From this point on, as long as Weir is their coach and Krebs is their AD, I will adamantly root against UNM to lose every game. I want Weir's head coaching career to be decimated.

Pete,
So you would turn down more money, better "conference", arena, city, and exposure to remain at your current job?
Why would you wish failure on someone that is making a better situation for their family?
Its just sports, get over it.

No other school in the WAC has a rivalry like the one NMSU has with UNM and UTEP. So I do not expect anyone else on this board to understand what it is like to watch a coach of yours go take a job at your hated rival. He fed NMSU fans a load of bull last year saying what he wanted to accomplish at NMSU. Weir spent the last ten years learning from our former HC Lou Henson. Yet a year later he turns around and take that knowledge and everything he has learned to our hated rival. He asked Henson and several Aggie donors with pull to help him get the job at NMSU. Fans wanted him, students wanted him and players wanted him. So it will take aggie a while to get the eff over it.

Again, what makes his choice different from personal choices you would make in your job?
You wouldn't leave your current job to a 150% pay raise to work with a bunch of Lobo fans? You know you would.

Bring back former CSUB coach Kieth Brown instead.
......Nessman? Hey, he technically coached in Bako too.
In all seriousness, hoping the Ags land a good one.

Luckily for me that has never happened. And to be honest, it would never happen. The hatred is just too much.

It's one thing if it's any job in the country. Those would've come.
It's quite another when it's the in-state and #1 hated rival who play each other twice a year. And then add all the BS promises and what he took advantage of to get his first opportunity in the profession. And after 1 year.
I'm not an Aggie fan or live near NM and my blood boils for them just reading about it.
I've always casually rooted for the Lobos like any quality non-P6. Now they are the #1 non-P6 I will be rooting against.

Praying wisdom for Coach Henson's doctors, strength for Coach Henson's body, & peace in the minds and hearts of all those who love/care for Coach Henson. Keep us updated.
